    Good video! With PVA, you can get a near perfect glossy surface if you dilute the PVA with water on your last coat. Gotta be careful to not let it run, though! Saves a ton of time - no need to sand and paint. Oh, and the music was pretty cool, too!

      Thanks good to know. Not going for the total glossy look for the end result of the headliner , but could be helpful for other future parts.

    looks great! We have only recently found your channel and have learned so much already from your great videos on your GMC. We recently got a 1974 Canyonlands 26'. Due to rodent damage everywhere inside and out, it will be slow going to completely gut it and try to get it to a "breathable" level. Thankfully we can watch you work and learn what to look for and how to repair things. I can't wait to see how it all turns out for you! Much respect, Michelle & Mike.

    • @getoutgadabout3423
      @getoutgadabout3423  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and congratulations on the Canyonlands purchase. Mold was the destroyer of my interior, and my wife has a severe mold allergy that’s why it all had to go for me. Mice can do some nasty damage. Try to inspect as much wiring as you can. Way too many coaches have been lost to electrical fires. And mice love wiring Insulation. Good luck to you. Enjoy the journey.

      @@getoutgadabout3423 Thank you so much! Oh wow, do I understand about mold allergies. I have them too, and asthma. It is nothing to mess around with. I am so excited for the day you and your wife can enjoy it together. We just had a long day of tear out. There were so many nests behind the cabinets. We are going to have to rewire it all, like you said, it is not worth the risk! But a happy event today...My hubby got it to rumble and start up! A major victory! :) Take care, and thanks again for sharing your knowledge here. It is greatly appreciated.

    Nice job. I hope you block this mold well as it would be a great resource for the GMC community if you allowed. I need the rear inside cap for our Birchaven, but our Palm Beach front/rear is in fantastic shape.
    A couple of notes. I had a 60k sq ft composites mfg faculty for about a decade. We used wax additives for external gel coat applications (repairs) to help push the cure due to the low mil applications and little mass to push the thermoset. It won’t have much impact on your glass layers as you should put down more mass than that to wet the glass. Yes, oxygen does impede the cure, but not nearly as much impact as the exotherm. Agreed you don’t want wax additive in the gel coat or other layers.
    PVA was probably a good choice first layer here to prevent styrene migration and a potential stick of the new plug. Might want to use wood strips in the future in leu of polystyrene foam with tape. The bridging won’t be a big deal and I’ve cut into a lot of glass when someone didn’t use urethane foams and it is often a mess inside. I hope you can show some close ups of how much texture you picked up on the final part. Nice job! Maybe next summer for us.

    • @MrZZeroG
      @MrZZeroG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@getoutgadabout3423 if you haven’t done the second layer yet (or even if you have) consider flexing some 1/2 plywood strips in there or use weights/tight bond to glue some 1/4 strips to match the curve across those large flat surfaces. You can just lay them in with glue still wet (don’t glue the wood to glass first step) and clamp/weight down so the layers take the surface shape. Then do one final layer over these with some chop mat or woven to hold them in place.
      If you double the section thickness, the stiffness goes up by 8. It will keep it nice and level. If you wanted a more permanent plug you could do an egg crate sort of insert with plywood 2-3” and it would be rock stable. For one or two off, this will do great.

      I use the GoPro max 360. The camera doesn’t actually spin it’s all done in the editing. So normally I can face the camera in any direction and it’s still recording whatever I wanted to but I accidentally had in hero mode which only uses the main lens and that unfortunately was facing towards the wall for several clips. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos thanks for being there.

    Doug - How would you fix the rear plastic cap? Mine has several cracks and 2 small missing pieces? Thank you for your help in advance.

    • @getoutgadabout3423
      @getoutgadabout3423  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I apologize, I thought I responded to this I must not of hit send. The caps are made of ABS plastic. You can’t just glue the edges together in a crack. It will not hold. The caps are very difficult to pull out as well. I feel the correct way to fix the crack would be to reinforce it from behind with some fiberglass and Epoxy resin. You could put another piece of ABS plastic to back it up glued with some MEK which works really well for bonding Abs. For the pieces that are missing once again I would put some kind of a backing fiberglass or ABS and then fill it with a little bit of body filter and try and match the texture the best I could.

    • @do.it.better
      @do.it.better 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I knew you would have the answer. I got it out...surprisingly the original crack didn’t break. So I can get to the back of it and reinforce with fiberglass. What kind of an epoxy would you use? I see the SEM has a plastic epoxy. Or should I use the total boat stuff you used? There are some holes from when some one tried (and failed) to hang a curtain. If I back it with fiberglass and epoxy...what you use to fill the hole? ...and btw...we haven’t seen any videos recently...

    • @getoutgadabout3423
      @getoutgadabout3423  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure any brand Epoxy resin would be OK. I would just use regular Bondo putty to fill the little pieces missing and just sand it and try and texturize it. You could even use a little bit of Epoxy resin mixed with silica to make like a peanut butter consistency, but it’s kind of hard to sand. I also wouldn’t fill the little missing pieces until the Is back in place, they might want to crack if you flex them too much. Don’t forget to lightly scuffed the ABS before you apply Epoxy. Ever since things started opening up I’ve been working 70+ hour work weeks so finding time to make a video and suitable weather has been kind of daunting. I am planning on one soon doing the roof seems. It seems When it’s not 95° out, it’s pouring rain so that hasn’t been helping out. The little bit of time I’ve had I’ve been working on the GTO because it’s indoors lol.
