Formerly "RVA MTB". I’m a somewhat experienced mountain biker in Richmond, VA. I love everything about mountain biking. The trails are my happy place. Luckily we have some great trails here from techy riding to fast flow trails that always bring out a smile.
I like to nerd out on the gear too. I do lots of reviews of budget oriented bikes and components. But sometimes you have to spend the big bucks on nice stuff and I cover that too.
Want to send me things to review? Email me at dtrmtb@gmail.com
Buying some MTB parts and want to help support the channel? Click my affiliate links below. Worldwide Cyclery is awesome! Everything ships for free and everything I have ordered has come super fast. Plus they have a great TH-cam channel. Nashbar holds a special place in my heart because it is where I bought my 1st bike. It's a great place to find deals but their selection is somewhat limited. Competitive Cyclist is kind of the opposite with some of the most premium bike brands out there.

MicroShift Advent X / Shimano Deore Hybrid - Followup
About a year ago I created the “Deont X” hybrid drivetrain by combining a Shimano Deore derailleur with a Microshift Advent X shifter and cassette. After riding it happily for about 9 months, the Deore derailleur had an unfortunate incident with a stick which bent the cage beyond repair. So, I put the Advent X derailleur back on.
Going back to the Advent X instantly reminded my why I changed it in the first place. The Deore clutch engagement is so much better. But there are a few little things I like more about the Advent X. So let’s take a deep dive into both of them in this follow up video.

Marin Oso Pedals - Better Than PNW and OneUp?
มุมมอง 3733 หลายเดือนก่อน
Marin sent me a pair of their Oso flat pedals and I was pleasantly surprised. So much so, that I decided to do this three minute review on them. Composite mountain bike pedals are a competitive space but Marin has managed to make something that stands out. They are larger than some of the competition like PNW and OneUp which makes them a more stable platform. They're slightly heavier and coat a...
Vittoria Agarro Review - Better Than Maxxis Rekon?
มุมมอง 3K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've been running a Vittoria Agarro on the rear of my mountain bike for over a year now. I wanted to try something different than the ubiquitous Maxxis tires. The Agarro looks a lot like a Maxxis Rekon. But is it any better? Well from what I can tell, it has just about the same level of grip, rolls just about as fast, is more durable, weights just a little bit more, and costs a little bit less....
Rockshox Judy - Easy Travel Increase
มุมมอง 7K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I'll show you a relatively quick and easy way to increase the travel on your Rockshox Judy fork. It doesn't require you to remove the lower legs. Most Judy forks are 100mm travel but they can be increased up to 120mm of travel. This process is also pretty much the same on a Rockshox Recon fork. You will need some specialty tools and lubricants to get the job done. I have some affi...

The Nakto Cruiser is a fat tire e-bike. I was sent this bike to review and the timing worked out perfectly with my beach vacation. I was able to assemble it and have a blast riding on the beach. After riding the 2023 Marin Pine Mountain 1 for a few months, I have a lot to say about it! I've ridden it on gravel, paved paths, technical singletrack, and now finally some singletrack flow trails! It has pleasantly surprised me in almost every situation. The steel frame is the standout. It has the most compliance of any hardtails that I have ever ridden. The new 2023 Marin Pine Mountain 1 is proving to be a capable bike on the trails, but there is one thing holding it back: The seat post. Great review 👏🚴
Thanks!
Too bad they don't make the light + high grip in a 2.6" I'm running the 2.4 tough + fast on 2 bikes, 1 with a vigilante and the other with a Vee Attack HPL super pleased with TB as a rear tire
Or even 2.4 light high grip. Vigilante / trail boss combo is a really good one though. Bit heavy but tons of grip.
@@downtoridemtbi found the Verdict a bit too much for the freeride bike (Spindrift, used for jumps and bike park mostly hardpack) so i swapped for the Vee. my trail bike (another Propain, this one the Hugene) i run TB+Vigilante. only one ride in, but seems to handle kitty litter ok! not enough for any semblance of a review from my end, yet.
The Vigilante blew me away in moist leaves during the fall. Just felt endlessly grippy. Wears pretty quick though in my experience. Can’t have it all I guess.
My fork rockshox gold 35 rl is 130mm travel now. Can i increase to 160mm travel?
I’m pretty sure on those you have to replace the entire air spring assembly. But keep in mind that if your bike was designed for 130mm travel then 160mm travel will throw off the geo and be potentially dangerous.
What a damn good review
Thank you for your equally good comment!
I have been a Maxxis guy and I tried a Barzo and the hard compound is garbage compared to Maxxis compound. I am taking the Barzo off and selling after one ride and going back to Maxxis Ardent race. Vittoria tires suck.
lol no mincing words there! I have gone back to Maxxis myself since this video was published.
I am riding the same as front tire and feels very good. It is nice that it is so durable.
I've heard the 8-speed Acolyte derailleur is compatible with the Advent X shifter and I wonder how well that setup actually works considering the low cost of the derailleur
Nice, might be worth trying. Even more budget friendly!
personal opinion: if you ride hard pack, or loose over hard, get trail boss front and rear. the 2.6 up front is plenty Chonky for hard hittin' conditions. if you ride up in the Loam, (portland/flagstaff/smokey's) the Verdict 2.5 up front with the TB 2.4 out back is pretty dang good. hard to believe these are overlooked while the DHF and Kryptotal are hogging the spotlight. *another tire that reminds me very much of the 2.4 TB's sidewall knobs is the vittoria Martello. i run one of those as a front on my hardtail.
Yeah I thought about a 2.6 Trail Boss for the front and looked up specs. I don’t remember exactly but it was similar weight to the 2.5 Vigilante and with the Vigilante you can get the high grip compound. Seems like the most versatile combo although I’m sure it wears quicker.
There's one for sale not for from me with a medium frame, I'm 5'11, would any guess the best size person for a med......
I think you’d be better off on a large frame
@@downtoridemtb 👍
hi what is your front wheel Inner Rim Width ? i just got my minion dhr 2 and there is Recommended Width 30-35mm and i have 23mm on my wheel Do I need new rims ?
According to the WTB run to tire chart, a 2.4 is “compatible” on 23mm rims, but not “optimal”. My rims were 29 or 30mm
@@downtoridemtb just wondering do i need sell them or try whit inner tube ? What you think buy inner tube and if it works good convert to tubeless if its possible ? Im new this
@@nikoleino1108 as long as your rim is tubeless compatible then you should be ok. If you already have an inner tube then I guess it wouldn’t hurt trying that first though.
Noise is probably chain line. I make sure my chain is dead straight in the 5th gear. Use bb spacers to adjust the line.
Been using the advent X for a few years now on 4 bikes and it is fantastic - really don't need more than 10 speed. On my 2 mtb's I have a 34 and a 36 chainring. On my 2 all terrain bikes (bikepacking) I have a 30 and a 38 chainring.
The maintenance manual for my Recon indicates that there crush washers and o-rings on the bolts that need to be replaced. Did your fork have these? Did you have any issues with fluid leaking afterwards?
Best practice is to replace them. I did not and actually did have a little leakage. Snugged it down a bit more and it was fine after that.
@@downtoridemtb That's real talk! The 200 hr service kit is unavailable for my fork. Luckily there is an upgrade kit that comes with this washers. Rockshox is winning money!
Does removing the spacer actually cause the fork to be 20mm longer or does it just allow the fork to compress 20mm more? I'm looking to slacken my HTA by moving from 100 to 120mm. But looking at the design of the Judy I came up with this question. Thanks
It allows the lowers to extend further and therefore makes the fork longer
❤❤❤
Do a 2024 version
Will this work with the sword levers?
Advent X and Sword are supposed to be compatible so I’d think so. Although I’d probably go full Sword since it has all the benefits that Deore has.
This is the only video I've seen that actually shows the Recon. Thanks for your work getting this recorded and posted!
Glad to do it! Thanks for the comment!
I've got the 2025 model on preorder and still found your video useful. They seem like great bikes. Literally just using my bike to get to vantage points, as I do landscape photography..
That’s so cool, never heard of anyone using their mountain bike for that purpose. Do you post your photos anywhere?
I have to subscribe to this dude. Super grounded and knows his stuff. Something I never adjust is the gearset. Way too complicated for me haha. I do have the MicroShift Advent X on my gravel bike, but I need to get it adjusted at a bike shop. Love them though.
Thanks bud! No fluff here. You should definitely give the adjustments a try. Pretty simple once you know what each screw does. Small learning curve but not bad.
very good video man! like the research and solution. Microshift has to figure something out. What's the point of having a clutch if it doesn't engage in time.
I agree and it looks like they did figure it out with the Sword derailleur. I will at least mention that the Advent X clutch does a good enough job to not drop the chain so it’s not terrible. Just could be refined, more teeth or just tighter manufacturing tolerances.
Great review: clear and concise, interesting, well-explained specifics. I had the same problem with the clutch “going soft.”. Microshift said tightening the clutch spring bolt didn’t add tension to the spring, but only more friction to the clutch pivot. They sent me a new derailleur as soon as I sent them a 10s video of me moving the cage w/clutch on and clutch off.
Yep there’s just a little too much play in the whole clutch system in my opinion. How’s the new one working out?
Does this tire a good choice for a Marin bobcat trail 3, for riding single tracks?
Really depends on the type of trails. As long as they aren’t too loose or wet then they should be fine.
@@downtoridemtb Maybe with a Martello as a front tire would be a good combination
I have a Advent-X and it’s a good little unit. The one thing that really bugs me about it is that you get a bit of free-spin between gears when shifting. Especially when shifting to a spinnier gear. It drives me crazy and I don’t get that with any of my other derailleurs on my other bikes
Hmm not really sure what you mean about that free spinning. Like not engaging on the gear quick enough?
@@downtoridemtb Yes!
@@scstinger5 sounds like an adjustment issue but who knows yours could have a manufacturing flaw. I never had that specific problem.
@@downtoridemtb I think you maybe right about the adjustment issue. I’ll play with it and maybe try a different chain or something. As I’ve only heard good things about the shifting on the Advent X.
Right on. Could just need a bit more cable tension to get it to go up to the bigger gears. I also found that a touch less b amendment gap seemed to work better.
What's a good PSI for a Race Recon 29 by 2.4 I'm 170 lb and light trail/gravel type of riding. I got em at 20 in the back and 18 up front.
That’s mostly personal preference in how much grip you want vs rolling speed. I’m a bit heavier and I’m usually at 24/26 on dual Maxxis Forekasters.
hi i want to upgrade this bike with a bomber z2 do you think it wil fit
As long as the steerer tube is long enough then you should be fine. You’ll probably run into the same issue with the tapered steerer tube and boost thru axles though.
@@downtoridemtb thanks
Whether it's the rock shock judy gold or the silver, or the recon gold or the silver, can its travel be increased to 140mm, if when you buy it it comes in 120mm? I would really appreciate the answer since I don't know whether to buy it or not..., I like to push the bike hard and due to the thickness of the bars I would surely opt for the recon silver or gold that has 32mm diameter bars. thank you.
Answered in your comment on my Judy video
Whether it's the rock shock judy gold or the silver, or the recon gold or the silver, can its travel be increased to 140mm, if when you buy it it comes in 120mm? Judy can only go to 120mm maximum. I think this is due to the smaller 30mm stanchions. You’ll also want to look up specs on damper side fluid amount and possibly add more when increasing the travel.
Have you ever looked at the shimano cues 👍🏻
I have. The derailleur itself looks very similar to Deore 11/12 speed but they say the cable pull ratio is different and they aren’t cross compatible. This would mean not compatible with Advent X either then.
Oh ok I’m in two minds weather to go with a shimano or advent x 👍🏻
Right on, well I can tell you that Cues is heavy. Heavier even than Deore. Supposed to be very durable though.
Friend, what size frame is it and what tread are the tires? I am very interested in knowing since the price changes somewhat in Size M and L. The price also changes in tire tread 29 to 27.5, I am almost 6 feet tall and I don't know what frame. take size M 27.5 or L in 29
I’d go large 29 if you’re close to 6ft tall
Talla L seria un buen tamaño para alguien que mide 1,76 Metros casi 6 pies o me debo ir por la talla M
Hope you usually say “thanks” when hikers step off the trail for you?
Yeah I usually do but I was definitely bad about it in this video. Thinking about riding and talking about the bike too much I guess.
Sorry, but I highly doubt that you (or anyone else) would be able to feel any noticeable amount of added compliance through the steel frame, when running 29x2.6 tires, at least not with a back to back test against an aluminium frame with the same tires
No way to say for sure but that is how it felt to me
I just want to say thank you for making this easy to follow video. I just bought my wife a new Rockshox Recon RL for her polygon cleo 2 hardtail. With the forks being brand new, I was able to follow the quick travel instructions and completed it within 10minutes. Thank you again for making me look good lol.
Man I wish mine went that easy! Hero husband status achieved! Thanks for the comment.
in my experience you have to grease shimano jockey wheel bushings, not lube. Heavy oil would probably be best.
Thanks for the tip. If the ones in the new derailleur get squeaky I’ll take them off and grease them.
12 speed XT M8100 Pulley Wheels should be compatible.
I bet they would. I should have done more research before.
Microshift makes great stuff. I don't think you can find better value (price vs performance) in the industry. I've used their 9 and 10 speed systems with 2x and 1x cranks including front derailleurs, and all of their stuff just works. Build quality is also great. Save some money on your drivetrain and spend the extra dough on high end brakes.
I agree although my most recent video covered a hybrid setup which I think is even better. Check it out.
Thanks for doing Microsoft reviews. I would be interested in buying this for my XC bike to replace an old 10spd slx setup, as I believe 10 speed is plenty. I’m running an SLX/ethirteen setup on another bike and a deore/slx on another, I am a big fan of SLX.
Yep 10 is plenty for me. All about the overall range.
I know this video is quite old already, but can someone say what the chainring clearance is on the Pien Mountain? Can't find any info regarding that. Would love to run a 36 tooth chainring.
I just did this, it was a huge pita. I had to remove lowers, the spacer looked like it was actually glued in place. Brand new bike. What was also odd is that only about 2 drops of oil came out. Everything was oily but it seems like there was not enough oil in it.
Yeah it’s definitely not easy. Glad you got it done though and got the right amount of oil in there too.
Ive been running this drive train on my emtb for about 6000km now , running 3x chains with wax and swapping every 200kms . Just about to get a new chain . So from what i can see the kmc 11 speed chain is the best recommendation at the moment ?
It’s definitely the best from what I’ve tried which are KMX 11s, sram 10s and sram 11s
Agarro r /Mazza or Martello f is hard to beat on a dry conditions trail tire. I think the steps do work for climbing traction. I have a wheelset with Continental Kryptotal front and Xynotal rear. The Xynotal has ramped center knobs. Doesn't give as good climbing traction as the Agarro. Both these new Conti and Vittoria have amazing rolling resistance. I've followed friends on XC tires coasting down a mountain and they did not pull away from me.
Interesting setup. Opposite of what I had… Mazza front and Agarro rear.
@@downtoridemtb I put the f and r in the wrong spot haha. Definitely Agarro in the rear.
@@trentvlak lol makes more sense now!
I've taken Martellos off my bike after 18 mo of riding, just because I was tired of looking at them. My only niggle on this video is no mention of measured casing width with psi and rim width too.
Yeah it’s insane how long they last. I finally switched mine just because I wanted to try something new.
graass is always greener. i need to get the mazza enduro race next. i loved the trail casing but got punctured so went enduro casing and ride is harsher and different feel that I am trying to get used to. The fact that it bounces around feels like it’s losing traction so need to try race version which is softer and grippier. I have the Martello race rear and it does exactly what I just mentioned
Is Giant good brand?
Definitely!
@@downtoridemtb thanks
Can I get Shimano 10 or 11 speed for similar money. One with the big range? This is the second Microshift product I have seen where the clutch is very lackluster.
Yes Deore 11 speed is cheap too and gives you more range. Or check out a video I did shortly after this where I put a Deore derailleur on with the rest still Advent X. Plus, follow-up to that video coming out soon, filmed it yesterday.
Is it good bike I sold my marlin 4 but idk if I’ll get another bike cause I have one right but I did have 2 but only 1 at the moment 😊
Just bought a 2020 talon 2 27.5. Previous owner put commuter tires on so need to swap those back. Can’t wait to test the hell out of it!
Nice! Putting the Ardents back on or trying something different?
You are right, just weighted a new 2.4WT/3C/EXO MT 950gr it also felt softer rubber
Which tire?
@@downtoridemtbRekon 2.4
That’s crazy. I just put on 2.4 Forekasters front and rear and was thinking I should have gone Rekon rear instead for something lighter but that makes them basically the exact same weight give or take a couple grams.
