  • The Dissector is one of the newest mountain bike tires from Maxxis. It aims to be a fast rolling but also grippy tire. In this video I'll give you my thoughts on the rolling speed and cornering grip, how it compares to other tires like the Rekon and DHR2, what I like and what I don't like.

    I just put a Dissector on my Trail bike and so far, I'm liking it. It can spin out a bit on the climbs more than a DHR, but it's got good grip and handles turns really well.

      Yeah definitely not at the grip level of a DHR but thats ok for me. Cheers!

      Yeah that’s a nice looking combo on paper. Please report back on how you like it. The big center to side channel kinda worries me for the front but at the same time plenty of higher end bikes come with Dissectors front and rear.

      Yeah I’ve tried 2 other rear tires since that one wore out but I think the dissector was my favorite. May go back to it.

    I like the dissector better as a front tire, where it doesn't take quite so much of a beating. I ran a dual compound 2.4" last season and put a fresh 2.4" 3C Max Terra on this year. The 3C is noticeably grippier. I suggest you try a rekon or aggressor out back with a dissector in the front. You'll notice a difference in rolling speed compared to the DHR II right away.

    I’m using the dissector in front (29x2.4) and was also super concerned about that huge gap to the side knobs. However, on the trail (dry hardback with sandy sections), it feels super predictable with no clear transition zone. Just tons of grip. I have used a rekon 2.4 in front for a while and also a 2.5 DHR in front briefly, and like the balance of grip and speed. Don’t feel like I gave up much, if any, on the dhr, and not sure it is noticeably slower than the rekon. As I got more aggressive in cornering, I was feeling the rekons squirm and fold over more on higher traction days, which began the experimenting. Overall still really like the rekon, though. The dissector, however, really surprised me and will be staying on the front of the bike. Now starting to experiment with rear tires to go with it with an emphasis on speed, while still kind of keeping up on cornering.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m still a little torn between trying a Dissector up front or ust going with a DHF. Only about 90g weight difference so it isn’t a drastic. Almost certainly going back to a Rekon in the rear, if for no other reason than to see how it feels going back. Anyway thanks for posting your experience. Definitely gives me something to think about.

    Try the Aggressor as a rear, I love it! Mines a 2.3, with a High Roller ll 2.6 up front. I switch to Recon 2.6 front and Ardent 2.25 rear in the summer.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the Aggressor looks pretty good and I know tons of people like it. Just going by looks holding them together, it’s hard for me to wrap my head around it being any faster or more grippy than a 2.4 Rekon. But I do like to try different tires so maybe I’ll give it a shot when this Dissector wears out.

    My current go to is a 3c 2.5Assegai front with a DC 2.4 dissector in the rear. The assegai sticks to everything and the dissector is fast and a bit loose/drifty (business up front party in the back at)

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never tried the Assegai. Just seems like overkill for the trails around here. But at least you’ll never be undergunned!

  • @HummusPower
    @HummusPower 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Warning *novel comment* haha
    So I searched TH-cam with the exact tyre description of the tyre I wanted to originally run for my rear (DHR II) but am now looking at putting on the rear because the assegai only comes in a 2.5 which won’t fit my bike and how it’s set up atm as it’s relatively entry level.
    But I came across video for the DHR front review and then after watching that and seeing what you said went to you most recent and found this dissector rear video haha. I was recommended to run the dissector rear or the DHR so the tyre set up in this vid is exactly the same.
    The weather and trails around near where I live are relatively the same as well so the feed was much appreciated. Cheers!! Subbed and liked.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad these video are helpful. Yeah I think if you’re limited to 2.4 for the front, DHR2 is the way to go. Some people have said the DHF is actually faster rolling but you’ll have the same 2.5 issue as with the Assegai. Anyway this is a solid setup and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

    I’ve primarily run a 2.5 aggressor or 2.4 Dissector on my Ripmo (Assegai 2.5 in front)… pretty happy with both but I felt the Dissector tread life was pretty short comparatively… BUT I’m general, I’m just tired of Maxxis tires and all the confusing options and limited durability. Just switched to Vittoria tires and am pretty pleased so far. (Video coming soon)

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought they stopped making the 2.5 Aggressor. Maybe it was just out of stock for a while. Anyway I hear you on the confusing options but I feel like that is the case with a lot of tire brands. I looked a bit at Schwalbe but their stuff seemed confusing too. I’ve also been looking at WTB but their tires are just heavy compared to similar tires from other brands. Interested to see what you think of Vittoria and which ones you went with.

    I think the evolution of your skills and your gear actually complement each other. You have better gear so you pass certain sections but you also learn and vice versa, as you learn you change gear to suit your new skills.

    I'm going to try one on the back.. i dont push the turns too hard..and although my aggressor that's on there now is wearing well i dont like the uphill traction ( also not the best braking) if at all loose or wet spots .. hoping this one does better climbing. Previously was running a high roller 2 out back but kinda draggy just felt like trying faster tires.

      You might like the updated Forekaster then. I’m currently running them front and rear and I like them a lot. I think the transition knobs help with partially leaned turns compared to the Dissector that doesn’t have them.

    I ran the 29" 2.4 Dissector WT as a front tire with a 29" 2.4 Rekon rear and really can't recommend it as a front tire. More than once per ride in a tight turn you could feel it hit the gap in the tread transitioning from center to side knobs and the sides would dig in hard and almost throw you over the bars. Definitely won't run as a front tire again. Just give me Assegai 3 seasons and a Rekon when it's dry.

    • @downtoridemtb

    I’ll have to check this out , I have the ardent on back now and it looses traction pretty easily . I have some aggressors on my hardtail and man they grip way better uphill but a tad heavy but extremely durable . This seems to be in between those two .

      @downtoridemtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I have heard a lot of good things about the Aggressor. I know it’s only 1/10 of an inch difference but the fact that it is a 2.3 kinda led me away from it. I think it is also heavier than the Dissector too. But I know I saw one video review saying it rolled faster than a Rekon so you’re definitely not alone in feeling like it a fast. Now I have even more tire combos bouncing around in my head!

    The Dissector is likely my next rear tire, I currently have DHR II but I'm looking for a better rolling tire, even if it has slightly less grip. Have you ever compared Maxxis tires with EXO and EXO+ casing? Do you think the + is really worth an extra $15-20 if you don't ride aggressive downhill trails? My DHR is EXO and it seems very durable and never had any puctures or tears, just wondering if I should upgrade just for peace of mind.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve never tried EXO+ because I’ve never felt the need to. Only tore one EXO tire and that was being stupid and trying to ride up a set of granite stairs. I’d stick with EXO for the Dissector if your DHR has been fine in EXO.
