The 2.6 Rekon front and 2.6 Ikon rear Is my all-time favorite tire combo for all around trail riding. They roll very fast while still providing great grip and provide the great high volume feel of a 2.6 tire while being lightweight.
Good review. With every tire we accept compromises. I have run 3 Agarro's over the past few years, on a Ripley, and Element. I would agree with everything you said except for weight. Miy 2.35 X 29 weighed in at almost 1100 grams. It was even heavier than the Mazza. You can't beat an Agarro for longevity, they last 3 times as long as a Recon. Another tire that I think is better for me, is the Bontregor XR4. It is grippy, and weighs at or below what they claim at around 830 grams. The downside is it doesn't last as long as the Recon, and not even close to as long as the Agarro. They also make it in a heavier casing as an SE4. I also run a Martellol, which I like for the front when using an Agarro. The Martello is right in between the Mazza and Agarro. Vittoria's 4C doesn't seem to be as soft as a Conti or the Maxxis tires. That is probably why they last so long!
I keep hearing good things about XR4s. I’ve avoided them because it feels wrong to but Bontrager parts on a non-Trek bike but really that is ignorant thinking on my part. I might have to give them a try. The price on them right now is pretty crazy. How does the rubber compound feel compared to Maxxis 3c Max Terra?
@@downtoridemtb XR4's are softer than the Max Terra. They don't last as long but grip quite well. The casing is not super durable either, but similar to a recon. The SE4 is 100 grams heavier and has a more durable casing.
@@lazylearner967 thanks. I tried to go to my local Trek dealer yesterday but they were closed. I just wanted to actually see one versus pictures online. Stopped at a different shop today and I’m really liking the updates Maxxis Forekaster though. I might have to give those a try.
I put on dual XR4 a couple years ago when they were on sale. Desert riding, I wore out the side knobs in ten rides. So the XR4 last a month for me, but the Agarro/martello last so long I replaced them because i got tired of looking at them. 18 months at least. Great tires.
Yep RZ2 but yeah the colors are very similar. I’m still happy with it so no need to change it. Sometimes think about other bikes and there are really good new bike deals out there but the used market is so bad for sellers that I know I wouldn’t get much for the RZ.
My GF's bike came with Rekon front and rear. The rear is worn and I told her to put the old front onto the back and get a new grippier front tyre. She is reluctant to get a chunkier tyre because she liked the Rekons so she is gonna try the Agarro on the front. Hopefully it's the right choice!
I have a 2.6 front and rear on my Hightower 29. Such a fast tire, really have to learn how to turn on them. 120 too and they have been amazing. 150mm front 140mm rear
Yep that’s a good combo. Jeff Lenosky runs that on his short travel bike. I ran Rekon 2.4 rear and 2.6 front and it was fast and light. Lost confidence in the front end grip though.
Agarro r /Mazza or Martello f is hard to beat on a dry conditions trail tire. I think the steps do work for climbing traction. I have a wheelset with Continental Kryptotal front and Xynotal rear. The Xynotal has ramped center knobs. Doesn't give as good climbing traction as the Agarro. Both these new Conti and Vittoria have amazing rolling resistance. I've followed friends on XC tires coasting down a mountain and they did not pull away from me.
i have never liked Mazzis rekon it slides to much on mud . as much as i ride i have learned were and when to expect a slide and which way slide will stop and regain its grip . there also first tire that got punctures repeatedly took awhile after applying patch inside tire wall finally stopped green slime helped locate the punctures glass slivers i bought 2 sets of rekon tires myself i would never buy them again i prefer firm grip long term i'm trying to destroy Maxxis rekon first set maybe 3k miles on them even with patch kit tread is holding up . on my tini bike i run Vittoria Saguaro there like sand paper in mud and grit sadly can not get them in bigger tire sizes on my other bikes . when u showed AGarro that was my first thought Vittoria Saguaro tred pattern but there different Treads might give Agarro a test on my 27.5 winter bike i normally use barzo xc Tires on my everyday bikes one is winter bike then i have 1 three season bike my first carbon framed bike not sure on that bike yet its light weight new age price was great my spouse made me give up two bikes i'll hush up nice video liked it very much gave me ideas .
Right on, the Rekon can be polarizing. It’s not great at anything but pretty good at a lot of stuff. I tried a 2.6 Rekon in the front and had a bad crash (can’t say it was the tires fault) but it made it very hard to trust as a front tire after that. Anyway, Syerra might be worth a look too. Seems like it slots in between a Saguaro and an Agarro.
@@downtoridemtb I put the Syerras on a Revel Ranger when they came out, like 2022 I think. The knobs are small and hard. It was a strange tire. On loose or soft dirt it gripped awesome. On wet or hardpack it was terrible. I went back to dual 2.35 Barzos. Much better.
Rekons are pretty much garbage. I have used them as a front tire until the casing popped (see my channel) My Yamaha 7 came w/a Rekon rear tire. That got changed almost immediately
I like the Rekon but only as a rear tire. Or if as a front tire, pretty much only on hardtack. I tried finding your Rekon failure video but I couldn’t find it.
@@downtoridemtb I attempted to link the Rekon video. Not sure if it went through. It's up on my channel now. Some weird stuff going on with YT today. Cheers
I have no idea why your alloy e-bike would come spec'd with a rekon tire. That's asking a lot of it. It's a good tire for green-blue dry and loose over hardpack, especially on a short travel bike.
I have been a Maxxis guy and I tried a Barzo and the hard compound is garbage compared to Maxxis compound. I am taking the Barzo off and selling after one ride and going back to Maxxis Ardent race. Vittoria tires suck.

Yeah the 2.6 Rekon is crazy light! Never tried an Ikon. Always thought it wouldn’t have enough grip. Or at least not in some situations.
Agarro rear (paired with a Mazza up front) is a KILLER combo for a fast rolling trail tire combo.
Yep I ran exactly that for a while. Only complaint is that the Vittoria rubber seems a little harder and less grippy than Maxxis DC or 3CT.
