MicroShift Advent X / Shimano Deore Hybrid - Will It Work?

- i'm a huge fan of my MicroShift Advent X 10 speed drivetrain. Its light, cheap and reliable - except for one thing: The clutch in the derailleur. By design, it has some free motion before tension engages. In addition to that, this is the second derailleur that has developed play in one of the main pivots, causing even more free motion.
In this video we will find out together if a Shimano Deore 11 speed derailler will work with the other Microshift parts. My research shows that it has the same pull ratio so it should, but you never know if what you read online is true. If it does work, it will fix my problem. More importantly though, it will save you around $20 compared to the Advent X derailleur.

Shimano M5100 derailleur to accommodate 50t cassette, M4100 SHIFTER 10s, KMC chain and cheap chinese cassette 10s.
works just fine bought it all for $100 best upgrade .

I've been having the exact same issue with my Advent X drivetrain, that the derailleur was starting to show this "play" as you described in the video. I started to notice it quite dramatically when I was riding in the highest gear (smallest cog) on the cassette, where the chain would almost immediately come loose after hitting some smaller jumps. Glad that it worked out fine with the 11s Deore deraileur, think I'll go ahead and buy one too as this appears to be the smartest solution to the issue. Because in general, I'm really happy with Advent X as a whole.

Great video. The derailleur on my Topstone 4 broke and I couldn't get a replacement Advent X so swapped in the Deore and works like a charm

It's a Deont X. And an interesting combo, when I was buying my Advent X, that Deore derailleur was half price of the Advent one. I only covered first 500 miles since install and pretty much forgot there's a clutch, I just ride the bike, it works, happy days 😊

Thanks for watching? So you put the Sram GX derailleur on with the rest Advent X parts? I thought I read the pull ratio was different. Maybe not though, my head was spinning trying to make sense of it all when I was looking it up.
@@downtoridemtb No sorry, My Riftzone 2 came with a 12 speed Sram SX cassette and derailleur. I upgraded the derailleur to 12 speed GX. I then 2 years later upgraded the cassette to GX as well with a 34 tooth GX front sprocket. It just made sense to me to upgrade the components as they wore out.
Right on, yeah I thought you had a Rifty 2 also. Definitely a smart way of upgrading like that.

It is great to see these experiments! I'm not sure why microshift clearly states that the shifter only works with advent x. I'm using the trail pro shifter from micro shift with a gx 11 speed derailleur without any issues after about 600 miles. All research suggests that it shouldn't work because they have different pull ratios, but it does. The gx 11 speed is only rated for a 42t cog, so I was surprised that it also worked with the 48t advent x cassette. I got the shifter and cassette first in the mail so I figured I would try it out and it worked great.
That’s cool. Yeah I thought Sram and Shimano weren’t compatible that way. Good option to know for the future since I think Deore 11 speed is being replace by Cues. Although Microshift recently came out with a Sword series which is compatible with Advent X and has a different style clutch.
Thanks for the info on the pull ration. Opens up another possibility. Using the Advent X 1x drop bar shifters with this RD and a sunrace 11-51 10 speed cassette for a 1x10 gravel set up. Will try this soon.
Glad to spread the knowledge. I never thought about trying it with an 11-51 10 speed cassette. Actually not even sure that I knew they existed. The 48t has been fine for me though but I’m not in a mountainous area.
The Marin Gestalt X10 uses Advent X drop bar shifters, rear derailleur but a Sunrace 11-51 10 speed cassette, so they must have tweaked the Advent X RD up a bit. I don't own this bike, but will mod another bike soon.
Very interesting. They are definitely pushing what microshift says but it must work for them to put it into production that way.
Tried a couple of things and the Sunrace 11-51 10 speed cassette does not work with the Shimano RD-M5100 rear derailleur. The actuation arm catches the chain in the middle of the cassette.

This Sunrace cassette is not stocked widely. Read somewhere that it is an OEM only cassette. It is listed in their full range catalogue, but does not come up with the online range selector.
I was lucky to be able to pick it up new for AUD $100 - must have been excess stock being sold off.
This cassette does work nicely with the Advent X rear derailleur - just needed to adjust the B limit screw a bit.

I've been running the Advent X derailleur with the Advent 9 speed shifter pod and a BOX prime 9 speed 11-50 cassette. Now that I've seen this work, I bet it'd work with my weird setup too. Probably going to try it out.
And as a disclaimer I did email Miscroshift about the compatibility of the advent 9 speed and 10 speed stuff before I did it. Have now been running it for about a year as well and have had no issues.

I kinda have the same setup. I used to have this ltwoo 10 speed drivetrain, 11-50t cassette. The performance is actually suprising and very smooth even while shifting on load only problem is the chain slap is insane. I decided to replace it with the deore m5100 derailleur. Took me about 30 minutes to tune the 11 spd deore with the 10 speed cassette and shifter (I'm using the 10 speed shifter btw it's god the same pull ratio as the shimano). I am currently happy with the outcome

Yeah the Advent clutch just doesn’t compete with the likes of Shimano. But for the price, it’s still a great deal.

It wasn’t so bad when it was new. And to be fair it was still shifting fine, just a bit noisy over rough terrain.

The clutch is but it has no effect on the dead zone before the clutch engages
Maybe the chain might be too long and cause the clutch to be delayed to engaged?
I used M7100 SLX on Advent X drop version for my gravel bike, and surprisingly it works well
That’s awesome. I’d guess all the Shimano Deore and better product lines probably use the same pull ratio.
@@downtoridemtb Yes, I hate most of the gravel gs available due to the fact that they don't have enough easy gears, specially on a 1by system. High end grx is too expensive and tops at around 46T and with a 42T chain ring and on harsh climbs, that is still kinda heavy. The entry level grx is also very limited to 36T max, and while a 2by is an option, I prefer 1by on a gravel bike personally.
This enabled me to run 11-48T with a 42T chainring which gives me enough gearing for most of my adventures. Also not to mention grx only has hydraulic brakes, though hydro brakes is nice, the upfront costs and maintenance + replacement if something do break is expensive

@@lowqualitysenpai6169 FYI, not cheap but GRX812 RD can fit a 46-48t. And I have mine fit to a 50t with an inexpensive Wolftooth Goatlink11.
so a 12 speed derailleur on a 10 speed cassette? what then is the difference between a deore 5100 and 6100?

very good video man! like the research and solution. Microshift has to figure something out. What's the point of having a clutch if it doesn't engage in time.
I agree and it looks like they did figure it out with the Sword derailleur. I will at least mention that the Advent X clutch does a good enough job to not drop the chain so it’s not terrible. Just could be refined, more teeth or just tighter manufacturing tolerances.
I’m going to have to try this. I think you just explained the annoying rattle I have from my advent x! I love the range and weight but I think this drivetrain is a little over hyped.
If it’s rattling over choppy stuff like breaking bumps and small rock gardens then it probably is that cause. Click the link in the description of you don’t mind. Helps support the channel. Hope it works for you. I think the Deore derailleur is better regardless. Good luck!

Yeah the biggest advantage is the lightweight cassette and just the fact that it is a 10 speed with that range. I think this is the perfect combination.
@@downtoridemtb on a 29er for me 48t is too small if going for 32t chainring but not tried 30t or 28t yet. But defenitly won't go bigger than 32t on a 29er. The 50t really works well for me, but I noticed a difference with 51t on Deore cassette but not massive, but I run Garbaruk 11-50t, it suits the 32t chainring but might be able to go down to 30t but can't find any chainrings in stock now anyway atleast not in Norway. Garbaruk is about 300g, about half of the Deore m5100, but would be sweet to have more cassettes mad elike this in smaller sizes. For me 11 speed works well. I use every gear. But not tried 12 speed, but went for 11 speed, stronger chain, lighter cassette. Nothing wrong with smaller cassettes, nice for smaller wheels, so drivetrain setup has to suit the wheelsize.
So this derailleur works on the advent 9speed setup too?
Also have the adventx on a ebike, my one upgrade was a aluminum top jockey wheel with ceramic bearings. I think it made a noticeable improvement in the shifting. Also need to keep hanger the straight..
I’ve never replaced jockey wheels but these do seem pretty basic so I can see how it would help. Cheers!

It been great. Although MicroShift now has a Sword derailleur that is compatible and has a different clutch style. So buying new, I’d actually want to try that instead.
I was also inclined to buy an AdventX for the hybrid MTB ive built, but due to unavailability, I opted for a Deore 5100 and a chinesium cassette with the last three lighter speeds in aluminum. Too bad, I was thinking of this microshift to start assembling my new gravel thanks to the Advent shifters for drop bars.
How does it shift with that cassette?
@@downtoridemtb perfectly. I had no issue in the initial adjustment and after 5000km I still haven't touched anything in terms of adjustment. Crankset, chain and derailleur are all Shimano 5100. There no signs of wear in the chinesium cassette and i'm a big dude (185cm x 100kg) discharging a pretty good amount of force/weight on the pedal

Maybe look into the Deore 10 speed that is meant to go on their 11-46 cassette. I just searched the Advent X pull ratio and then searched the Deore 11 speed pull ratio. Some conflicting info out there but mostly the consensus was 1.1:1 for both of those.
I think you're good up to an 11 speed although you might need an 11 speed chain.

I think my dive into the rabbit hole started by thinking I could go Deore 10 speed but it can only clear 46t. Honestly probably would work with 48t though. But anyway I started wondering what the difference was for the 11 speed. That was followed by more deep dives into pull ratios.

Thanks. I haven’t tried the V2 yet. They said the clutch is the same. I’m more interested in their Sword derailleur which is compatible and has a different clutch.
I’ll have to look into the sword. Is the Shimano derailleur still holding tension better than the advent?
@@jasonrichmond7974 yes the clutch is doing great on it. Jockey wheels got a bit squeaky so i dripped some lube in them recently. Thinking of swapping the to XTR jockey wheels that have bearings instead of bushings.
It would be interesting to see the derailleur movement as you compress the rear suspension. My guess is when you sit on the bike the derailleur would have moved and would have taken up that slight movement of the advent x. ???
Not really any different overall. It may click into the next set of teeth but then it is rmoving within the free play of that spot. I can say for sure that this Deore derailleur is quieter over choppy terrain. Although to be fair the Advent X derailleur still went into the gears like it was supposed to.

Yes, very workable combination. Still riding it this way and it is great. Just be sure your chain is the right length. Mine was a little too short and it wasn’t shifting perfectly. Added an inner and out link back in and that took care of it.
@@downtoridemtb Great advice. Is that why you are using a KMC 11 speed chain? I had a kmc 10 speed chain on my list of components to buy - would this be a mistake in your opinion?
Definitely go with the 11 speed chain. I think even with full Advent X, it is better than a 10 speed chain. But with throwing the 11 speed deore derailleur in the mix, it might be a necessity for clearance.

Depends a little on what you ride. 32t is probably a good middle ground though.
So I replaced with the deore and it still didn’t fix my issue but I then realized that my cassette was just a little loose because I didn’t install a spacer before installing the 10 spd cassette. Any chance yours has play in it as well? I did torque the cassette but without the right spacer it still has play that made it shift bad and loud.
Yeah I’ve been there where I was convinced it was one thing, but a new part, then find out it was something else. Mine definitely does have the spacer before the cassette. Some hubs don’t even need that spacer though. Glad you figured it out in the end!
A question to anyone using advent-x. How do you find the shifter? How is the feel? Is it a pretty sturdy unit? Does it allow for multiple shifts as per Shimano/SRAM? Looking at the pro variant with the rubber pad. Cheers
You can do multiple shifts at once. At least three. Maybe even more than that. I think it feels good. Actual shimano deore 12 speed shifter that I have on another bike seems like it has lighter action. I notice for the first couple shifts then it just feels normal and I don’t even think about it.
They said that the shimano m5100 rd can work with 10 and 12 speed shifters.

I’m not familiar with STI but if your current setup works with Advent X then it should work with Deore 11s.

Yes it definitely should. Also means the higher end Shimano 11 speed derailleurs should work too.

Microshift announced rev.2 of theirs Advent X mech. Just waiting to see how clutch works at these upgrade unit.
I actually talked to someone at Microshift about this. No changes to the actual clutch itself.

I upgrading (downgrading?) from decade old Sram X01 carbon/alloy cage and titanium spring. But this mech is without clutch ;) And after change for 1x10 i need to be more carefully when shifting ;) This is main reason for change.
2nd reason is casette compatibilty. My old Sram only accept 36T cogs, with extension i force this derailleur to work with 46T casette, but it is not perfect.
So it should be better with Advent X anyway.

2:04 I am curious what the difference between the 12 and 11 speed version is aport from added Shimano logo the RD looks the same, but not had them side by side. Both can do 11-51T
I have the M6100 SGS. so 12 speed version, butt run it with 11 speed cassette, with Archer D1XTrail.
Good question. Only thing I’m thinking is that the pull ratio may be different on the 12 speed version. Can’t say for sure though.
I Use SLX RD 12s With Sunrace Cassete 10s (11/51) The Best 10s Cassete, and Deore Shifter 10s And 11s Chain SUMC. All Shimano RD 12 works 11 and 10s Cassetes. The Diference is Limit Screw

@@alessandrouk2 After using Sunrace Cassettes I won't buy the current models again. With some short term use I got bent teeth, bent cogs, sharp edges on teeth, at ramps.
11-50 T 11 speed got loose rivets, I tried 2 cassettes, same issues on both. the 11-46T did not, I tried 3 cassettes. Shifting performance is passable, but it's no means great, for smooth shifting, and low price tag i would go fo Shimano M5100, but for co cost spared I would go for Garbaruk, it's cheaper and lighter than XX1 and XTR. I use the 11-50T HG version on my enduro bike.
This is awesome! I was interested in the Advent X but this seems like a great combo. Did you need to make the 11speed 116L chain smaller?
Well the chain length has more to do with your chainring size and chainstay length. I will say for me it was slightly undersized with the full Advent setup and I added an inner and outer link to get it to work properly with the deore derailleur.
I just watched this again and I was wondering if you could use this same setup but with a different 10 speed shifter i.e the shimano m4100 (10 speed) since u can use that derailleur with ispec-ev
I think someone commented on this video that they did the same with the Deore 10 speed derailleur. Not sure if that is m4100 though. I do know the 48t cassette is slightly more than it was designed for but if I remember right it still worked fine.

how is it you are usiung a 11 speed derailer on a ten speed Advent X drive train?
All that really matter is the pull ratio, meaning X amount of cable movement causes X amount of derailleur movement, and that the biggest and smallest cogs are within range.

Microshift has released a new version of Advent X. This might be better but they have reduced its chain wrap capacity.

It may not even have one. I think I browsed their derailleurs a while ago and didn’t see any with clutches.

I was told that the Microshift Advent X rear derailleur has to be used with Advent X shifter only. Is that true?
I’m really not sure. I mean if this setup works, then it would work in the opposite configuration meaning a deore 11 speed shifter. So you’d then tune one of your limit screws to essentially disable a gear. Better though if deore 10 speed would work. I can’t find definitive info that the pull ratio is the same though.

Correct. Although I believe their 12 speed derailleurs are the same pull ratio so those should work too.

Definitely wouldn’t go 34t though or it would be too hard to do some climbs since the Advent X cassette goes to 48t and not 51t or 52t like most 11 or 12 speed drivetrains. If you have a lot of long steep climbs then a 30t might be better. Hope that helps. Mahalo!

I didn't know about the fake Shimano derailleur, I've heard of replica cassettes, cranks & chainrings but never more complex parts. I'll be more careful...
I can’t say it’s happening for sure. Could also be factory rejects. I’d just rather spend a few bucks more and not have worry about it.
Can you use a Shimano 10 speed shifter (sl-m4100-r), Shimano 11 speed derailleur (rd-5100-sgs) and the Microshift Advent X cassette?
I’m really not sure. If you already have the Deore 10s shifter then I’d say it’s worth a try. If it doesn’t work, then you’d just be out like $20-$30 for the Advent X shifter. Please report back if you try it so others will know too!
Don't think this will work. Because the Shimano 10 speed shifter has a different cable pull than the Advent X shifter (and the Shimano 11 speed shifter).
I am actuality considering getting the Archer Components D1x shifter instead 🙈
Hey dude. I'm really keen for an update on how this is working out. Shimano are pretty straight forward in their technical info about the M5100 being designed for a MIN/MAX 51 low sprocket, so this really intrigues me... Not to mention the fact M5100 is 11 speed and you're running on a 10 speed cassette. I'm building up a new bike at the mo, and just picked up an Advent-X CS-G104 11-48 cassette really cheap. Looking at either the 10/11 speed Deore M5120 or doing the same as you with the M5100. M5120 worries me slightly, as the MAX sprocket on that is 46... Any feedback or tips are much appreciated. I should do a followup. But for now, it is still working very well. It works on the 10 speed because the shifter is telling it how much to move and the limit screws limit it as I set it. I considered that 10 speed deore derailed too but from what I read the 10 speed uses a different pull ratio. I think. I’m not really sure though.
@@downtoridemtb Coincidentally Chain reaction has the M5100 derailleur on sale currently for £15 (!!), so it's an absolute no brainer to give it a punt. Got the cassette for £30, so this is turning out to be a cheap build! The main thing that was putting me off M5100 is that the matching 11-51 11 speed cassette is 650g! Whereas the Microshift cassette is only 420g.
That is an amazing deal! Shimano may actually be phasing out the deore 11 speed entirely with the release of the new shimano cues line. I may order a second derailleur before they are completely gone.
I've just fitted on the ebike and it's not that smooth sometimes it won't shift down a gear it hesitates. Not great for racing

10 speed to 10 speed and it should work. Just be sure your derailleur can clear the 48t big cog
Late to this, but I never understood the appeal of the Advent X, at least as an aftermarket upgrade to 1x that many recommend, as the M5100 groupset as a whole seem superior to everything but weight and can be had for very similar cost while remaining HG compatible.
Weight is a big part of it although probably less important than I make it out to be. Personally I prefer the gaps between gears of a 10 speed. 11 and 12 I feel like I’m always double and triple shifting.
Shimano can give good discounts on their mass market products they are still the leading MTB group set maker I never considered using an 11 speed chain on a 10 speed of course the chain been narrower will give it more room to move between gears. I have also found the cheaper KMC chains work really well even more so the home brand from Decathlons which are just KMC chains boxed with the Stores name but only 10 euros for a 118 link chain and not the 38 plus Euros you pay for a Shimano of the higher level KMC chains.
I knew that Microshifts items work with both Sram and Shimano but not sure how cross compatible they are with all the range of Deore or mixed Road shifters with MTB gears.
Yeah cheap KMC chains seem to do just fine. I don’t think we have Decathalon readily available in the US. Anyway thanks for the comment, I’m sure plenty of non-US riders will appreciate it!

I may be totally wrong - but I'm going to think out loud for a minute. Really pull ratios and compatibility are probably more about compatibility between the shifter and the cassette right? The derailleur moves any amount the shifter tells it to - the question is - is it the right distance for the spread between each cog.?? I guess whatever system you use - the derailleur also needs to have a correct range of adjustment on limit screws etc. And of course the derailleur needs to be able to store the right amount of chain for the size of cassette as well (i.e. can't use a short little Saint mech for a 50T cassette. Funny thing is Microshift website says the shifter isn't compatible with Shimano or SRAM.
You might be right. Maybe both. The shifter determines how much the cable moves. But the derailleur design determines how much that cable movement equals in actual derailleur movement. All of your other points are spot on about the maximum side to side movement and maximum cassette tooth compatibility.

Yes. Have a good 5+ rides on it and it is working well. The shimano derailleur has a mark to align to a 51t cassette and I just aligned it with the 48t on the advent x cassette and it is good. Of course that distance grows a little when the rear suspension moves.
would it work on a 9 speed adventix shifter?
Really not sure about that one. If you can find any info on using an Advent X derailleur with Advent 9 speed that would point you in the right direction. If that works, then so would this.

Just tried this setup. It didn't even come close to working. When shifting down to about 5th gear it would completely skip a gear and was very clicky around the middle gears. Made multiple adjustments to cable tension to no avail. Personally I wouldn't advise this.
Very surprised by this. I’m still running this setup and it’s working great. Did you adjust the b-limit screw? Chain long enough?
I encountered this exact problem and a quick check of the installation guide showed that I had installed the shift cable on the wrong side of the clamp screw. Moving the cable to the other side fixed the problem.
After weekend testing i need to update few things:
1. Shifter has very unfortunate place for screw covering hole for cable. Made of plastic, hard to reach when installed on bars. Rubber plug (like old Sram X series) doing this job perfect. Other than this, shifter is well made and levers are within reach of tumb. Rubber pad in PRO version is nice addon.
2. Mech. Worst on the market jockey wheels: sleeve bearings with very little grease inside, bi directional, non profiled for chain (narrow wide)
- clutch switch is terrible. When turning off need to fight every time. Very hard to switch off.
- cable routing is not perfect but this is more a visual thing.
But good side: shifting well, better than SRAM X01 from previous era, b-screw tool included, not difficult to set up. Plenty space with 48T casette
3.Casette (G version)
- lack of 17T cog. Gap is too big between 18 and 15T.
+ Light, good shifting, range.
I try with KMC X10EL chain, and no rubbing. As mention on this video. Shifting is flawless.

Thanks for sharing all this. Definitely more in depth than I got. Good news is that any of the high end Shimano 11 or 12 speed derailleurs should also be compatible. So you could definitely get one that solves most of those -‘s
@@downtoridemtb i belive rubbing problems on casette exist, because small play on sleeve bearings at jockey wheels. This imperfetion causes wheels to tilt/slide and shifting is delayed.
I just put extra lithium grease in my and working fine.
I will try BBB ball bearing wheels on it soon (i've got spare set) but they are made for 12spd (little narrower) so need to put extra spacers (as I've done before with Sram X01) Or maybe Microshift already make hanger compatible with narrow one? This is next job I'll try.
And casette need to be te-tighten after few miles as well (I use torque wrench).
I belive this is best price/performance set for 10spd and old bikes.
After tunning should become unbeatable.

I just fit new jockey wheels.
BBB BDP-07 (cost me 20 quid)
Original one are really bad - I need to replace after 250km (140 miles) because bearing area are not mud/water tight...
So afer this distance - shifting precision was lost... And rotating resistance was unacceptable.
Few things:
- BDP-07 wheels are for 12 spd - so they are thinner a bit, but in my deraileur i can squeeze it with 10spd KMC chain without rubbing anything.
- metal protective part at lower back of cage, is bending corner of cage a litle bit, due to loss of clearance, but i do not notice any problems with precision of gear changing.
+ They are exactly same size as original one (diameter)
+ narrow-wide profile
+ ball bearing
+ water and mud tight
+ teeth profiles to improve chain glide (one directional)
+ more precise shift
+ original screws has thread long enough to fit 12spd narrower wheels without washers.
Awesome I may have to look into those. I can’t say I’ve had any problems with the stock ones but better is better!
i'm gonna to try this setup in my dartmoor primal evo, i have the same shifter and in my opinion is isn't microshift but it is microshit
Lol, hopefully this solves it. Before you pull the trigger you might want to check out the Microshift Sword derailleur or even a higher end Shimano derailleur. Deore is good but there are definitely some things that could be improved.

a derailuer just slides from side to side, get the ratio crap to the actual shifter where it belongs. all propaganda from the manufactures. I just bought an advent x cassette and a deore rear derailure.....
Not sure I agree. 1 derailleur could be designed in a way that 1mm cable pull equals 1mm derailleur movement. Another derailleur could be designed in a way that 1mm cable pull equals 2mm movement. All the shifter does is move the cable.
