WTB Trail Boss - Front Tire Followup

- Its been a few months of using this 29" x 2.4" WTB Trail Boss as a front tire. This is the newer model with higher and more spaced out knobs for added grip. The Fast Rolling compound is just that, however it lacks the grip I want from a front tire in most situations aside from hard pack. Still a solid choice for a rear tire though. I really wish WTB would offer this tire on their High Grip compound.
That helped me out a lot in making my decision. Thanks!
Great to hear it!
Trail boss Tough Fast Rolling 2.6 rear and Vigilante Tough High Grip 2.8 front is what I'm currently using and I'm super happy with it.
I bet that had tons of grip!
@@downtoridemtb yes and those tough casings are stiff enough for me to run low pressures without squirm
A new bike shop opened in town and they carry WTB. Tried out the Vigilante/ Trail Boss Combo. Vigilante is a bit too "Enduro". Wish they had a tire a bit gripper than the Trail Boss for the front, but less than the Vigilante.
I had thought about running another Trail Boss up front. Thanks for sharing how that went.
Glad you got something useful out of my experience with the Trail Boss as a front tire. I still really wish they made a High Grip version of it. I think that would be exactly what we are both looking for. Hard to beat the grip from that Vigilante though!
From memory the older version with less tread spacing was designed that way to make the tyre more durable/puncture resistant.
Bloody great rear tyre. Want more grip? Longer chain stays are where it's at.
Not sure I'm a fan of the updated design. Sounds like they switched back to their original prototype before the testers asked for tighter spacing.
I saw a video a while back before the redesign where some people tested a prototype with even more knob spacing. They requested closer knobs which WTB did but it is still more spacing that the original. I never ran this one as a rear tire but I think it would be really good.
Love the Vigilante/ Trail Boss combo. Run it most of year in SoCal and Arizona. Looking to get the same combo in 2.6” front and rear for my Honzo ESD.
It’s a good one but I just put on a Vittoria setup to try something different… and lighter
I run the Trail Boss in 29x2.6 in the rear as it rolls really fast. I use the Vigilante in the front for grip. Works great for me. 🤘
Sounds like a solid setup especially with that added width. What bike are they on?
@@downtoridemtb They are on my Marin Alpine trail 7. Runs really well down here in southern Utah.
Too bad they don't make the light + high grip in a 2.6"
I'm running the 2.4 tough + fast on 2 bikes, 1 with a vigilante and the other with a Vee Attack HPL
super pleased with TB as a rear tire
Or even 2.4 light high grip. Vigilante / trail boss combo is a really good one though. Bit heavy but tons of grip.
@@downtoridemtbi found the Verdict a bit too much for the freeride bike (Spindrift, used for jumps and bike park mostly hardpack) so i swapped for the Vee. my trail bike (another Propain, this one the Hugene) i run TB+Vigilante. only one ride in, but seems to handle kitty litter ok! not enough for any semblance of a review from my end, yet.
The Vigilante blew me away in moist leaves during the fall. Just felt endlessly grippy. Wears pretty quick though in my experience. Can’t have it all I guess.
WTB trail boss tough on my rift 3 front and back and they suuuuuk.....so heavy feels like dragging a boat anchor. I think the light version is probably wayyyyy better. Those TBs made my bike feel like the brake was on lock...not good
Yeah I’d never run the Tough version of them. You’d have to be smashing rocky DH trails with zero regard to need that level of protection.
Do WTB tires run true-to-size?
They at least pass the eye measurement
Hi again would you prefer maxxis or wtb tires?
They’re both great brands. I don’t like how Maxxis have gotten so insanely expensive. I also really like this Vigilante as a front tire. I ordered some Vittoria tires and only put the Vigilante on as a temporary solution until those arrived but now I don’t want to take it off!
I've found WTB casings to be more to my liking
