  • Marin has redesigned the Pine Mountain for 2023 and I got my hands on one to ride and review. The Pine Mountain is their do-it-all bike aimed at people who like mountain biking of any kind and adventure riding like bikepacking.
    In this video we will take a close look a the frame and all of the components. We start with the frame which is made from chromoly steel. This is unique and steel bikes certainly have a small but dedicated group of enthusiasts. The Pine Mountain has modern trail geometry which should satisfy the trail riders out there, but it also has tons of gear mounts and interesting handlebars to cater to the bikepacking crowd.
    From there, we will cover all of the companents, including:
    - Shimano Deore 11 speed drivetrain
    - Shimano MT400/420 brakes
    - Marin branded stem, handebars and grips
    - Marin branded crankset with external bottom bracket
    - Basic seatpost
    - Vee Tire Flow Snap tires
    Stay tuned for a followup video where I get this bike out on the trails and give it a full ride and review. I'm very interested to see if I notice any difference in ride feel or compliance with this steel frame.
    Want to buy a Pine Mountain and support the channel? Order from the Jenson link and I’ll get a little kickback and you won’t spend a penny more:

    Disclaimer: Marin did send this bike to me to review. I am not being paid to do this video. I do have to send the bike back to them. I can say anything that I want.

    This would be really ideal for bikepacking because of all the mounting points. I'll keep my eyes on this.

      For sure. I should have my followup video out in a few weeks. So far I’ve really been enjoying the bike.

    The lack of thru axle is a bummer.

      Bummer, yes. But I don’t think it is a complete bike ruiner. I’d have to do more research on wheel upgrades for qr 141.

    It doesnt have a dropper for a reason. If you go bikepacking, you usually have seatpost bag attached and that is not possible with a dropper. But you can add it if you want, so I understand their decision

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah makes sense. I guess for bikepacking you set it in one spot and pretty much leave it.

    $1500 - not bad - it may not have all the most favored bells and whistles, however you can hit the dirt and trails right outta the box and have a good time while doing so
    Great “entry level” MTB that will be a solid rider for years and has plenty of room to upgrade as the years go by too

      I agree. I got a good ride on it today and it was fun. Not super fast but that isn’t really the point of it. Felt very forgiving for a hardtail. I’m impressed.

    Great review. How accurate is Marin's frame sizing chart you reckon? I'm 180cm/5'11" tall. For '22 model I'd consider L size with 455mm reach. '23 model as you've mentioned is 20mm longer with 475mm reach which in theory pushes me down to M size frame. What size frame were you testing and how did it feel for your height? Thanks

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! I’m 6’ and the large felt right to me. I’d think at 5’ 11” the large would still be your best option. If I remember correctly, they recommended XL for shorter heights than I’m used to seeing. I think I was borderline between L and XL.

      Thanks for your prompt reply. It seems that my best bet would be test riding both sizes. However L might sound like a better fit considering a bit more progressive geometry. on '23 model. Keep up the good work.

    I know this video is quite old already, but can someone say what the chainring clearance is on the Pien Mountain? Can't find any info regarding that. Would love to run a 36 tooth chainring.

    So its very safe to say that you never did put better fork on your Giant Talon if you still have it ?

    • @downtoridemtb

      I still have it and it is coming soon. Just got distracted with other bikes.

    Seriously thinking about ordering the 2.. how does it climb?

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pretty good considering it’s weight. It just kinda trucks up techy climbs. Long fire road climbs and that weight might start to be more noticeable though.

    My Rigid Pine Mountain is 4 pounds lighter with a steel fork and 650b plus size tires. Where did the extra 4 pounds come from?

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably a lot to do with the fork. The Recon is heavy with steel uppers. Also the tubes and tires. I assume you’re running tubeless.

    What size is the bike and how tall are you thx

  • @mtbboy1993
    @mtbboy1993 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    would be nice if it had a lower top tube for better stand over and steep terrain.
    6:26 Any bike without a replicable RD hanger is a NO! for me.
    But Deore is a great low budget choice.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah lower tip tube would be good for that but would take away storage space for a frame bag. About the replaceable derailleur hanger, I think it is fairly common to not have them on steel bikes. You can just bend it back with a tool… which I have already had to do once after the bike fell over and smacked the derailleur into the ground

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@downtoridemtb I suspect frame bag was the reason. But if you snap a the hanger, you would need a to weld on a new one.

    Great video. No thru axle..

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah kinda a shame just for future upgrade compatibility. I don’t think it would be a deal breaker for me though. Can always get wheels built if you can’t find off the shelf ones.

  • @CasperRc81
    @CasperRc81 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Seriously about the two frames. When the “team Marin 1” is same price for boost. Who cares about Al those screw holes straps work great. And bars are replaceable.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I see them as two pretty different bikes for different types of riders though

  • @jurisx85
    @jurisx85 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    $ 1500 and no boost? That doesn’t make any sense. Great looking bike though.

      Reason why I didn’t get it 😢

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah boost would have really been nice but it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me. Riding I don’t think anyone will notice a difference. Was looking around at wheel upgrade options and you can actually get Nukeproof Horizon v2 wheels with an end cap kit to convert them to 141 qr.

  • @greensleeves8095
    @greensleeves8095 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That QR axle on the back is ridiculous! This is a really expensive bike with a limited upgrade path and poor longevity. This bike is only gonna last as long as that rear hub. What a stupid decision! Just charge 50 bucks more and use the same molds for the Pine Mountain 2.
    Why make this bike in steel when you're not gonna allow the user to fully appreciate it. Just keep it aluminum or make it better.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree it’s a bummer and to me it doesn’t make sense. But I don’t think it’s detrimental. I looked up the Nukeproof Horizons since I have them on my main bike and they’re great and you can get endcaps to run them on qr 141. Plus you can always have wheels built.
