Life Survival's "Florida River Knives" by Chris Parker
“I grew up camping, fishing, and surfing and later moved into hiking, survival and traveling. I’ve owned many knives over the years. Some were good and some were bad. As a twelve-year-old boy in Florida I feared pulling my blade out and seeing it covered in rust or breaking the point off in a tree. Sure, I knew to oil the blade and care for it and I did, but I went in and out of the water three times that day and spots of rust were already appearing and I didn’t mean to stick the blade into that tree so far. Humidity and sweat alone were known to tarnish some blades. I always thought, the perfect Florida Knives would be super rugged, made of a strong stainless and a hard wood. Drifting down the river one day, I daydreamed the sizes and named them after my favorite Florida rivers and springs.
Eventually, I challenged myself to develop affordable knives that were perfectly suited for Florida’s elements and weather. They would have to be crafted from a locally sourced wood with powerful properties. A material that termites couldn’t eat and that wouldn’t rot in Florida’s freshwater springs and water ways. The steel would have to be resistant to corrosion and incredibly strong. Then there was the biggest challenge… I had to find someone to help me make my knife idea come to fruition. Why not make them myself? Because I may be capable of many things, but making knives is definitely not one.
I visited many knife shows and expos and I talked to a ton of knife makers. Then one day I saw a custom straight razor on the Internet made by Chris Parker of Parker Knives USA. It was absolutely beautiful. I checked out his other works and they were equally as impressive. I approached Chris with my sketches, ideas, and pictures and we spoke for a while. I had found my knife maker. Chris brought everything together into one piece and I could see my thoughts and dreams being birthed into physical form. Chris taught me about some of the finer details in knife making and we added modifications I had never even imagined. I watched my flattened-style handle slowly morph into a molded and comfortable form. A point turned a bit more upward here, an edge widened there, and The Florida River Knives were born.”
Born out of necessity, the Florida River Knives are the latest line of cutting tools from Life Survival. Each blade is crafted from corrosion-resistant 440c Stainless Steel. As an avid outdoorsman and guide, Aaron Phillips needed blades that could withstand both the weather and high impact usage. Aaron took his sketches and concepts to knifemaker Chris Parker of Parker Knives USA. The knifemaker put his pencil to paper and after consideration from both parties, the Florida River Knives were born.
The handles are carved from Lignum Vitae, a tree indigenous to Florida and the Caribbean. This type of wood is the densest commercially traded wood in the world. It has been used in shipbuilding for centuries because it is impervious to rot and wood-consuming insects. Each knife is named after a Florida river. Our largest knife is the Suwannee, the survival chopper, followed by the Apalachi, the EDC or camp knife, followed by the Oklawaha, the neck knife, and finally, the Myakka, the carver. Each blade has an intended design and use, but all maintain rugged integrity. All the knives in the set, except the Myakka Carver, are full tang and mechanically fastened with brass pins. Modifications and customizations are available upon request. The Florida River Knives are crafted from native durable materials and are blades to be used.
Chris Parker is a ten year United States Army veteran and has been making knives for nearly half a decade. He works full time as a crocodile wrangler and is the owner of Parker Knives USA
Aaron Phillips is a river and trail guide, outdoor instructor, and survivalist. He also provides production guide services, consults for outdoor television programs, and offers many other outdoor related services.

I used to make this with my friend when I was a kid. We usually used whatever we could find though. Shoe laces, jute string, or just about any kind of twine. In Florida we don't see many smooth stones in our rivers so we always used some type of hickory nuts, marbles, or we'd carve round wooden balls for ammo. To make the Shepherd's Sling or Rock Sling... I like your shelter but at 10-20 hours to build, I think that is far too long in a true survival situation, or in a semi-staged situation like "Naked and Afraid." The fastest good to acceptable shelter I have seen is by Bushmasters of Guyana; see th-cam.com/video/WawQwnj7zgk/w-d-xo.html He has stated to me that he can build that shelter in 30 minutes, including gathering the materials, once a suitable site with good resources is located. The key is using Y shaped sticks for all supports, and very little lashing (which takes too long). I would like to see you try this approach, and time it, to see if 30 minutes could be achieved. I think as a second effort, it would be interesting to see how fast a coffin-shaped structure could be built on top of the Bushmaster bed, using a similar Y-shaped stick approach. The "coffin" would be made of a stick structure covered with enough palm leaves to keep out mosquitoes and chitras, and other bugs. I think real survival situations require speed, efficiency, knowledge and planning, to minimize the time per task, and thus allow all other needed tasks to be done within the very limited total time available. Cheers, Lew T Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society Member, The Explorers Club

    • @PhillicleFile
      @PhillicleFile 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for watching and taking a minute to comment Lew! This is the second time you have addressed me in a negative manner on social media. But keep it coming bud. If people aren't hating, then I'm doing something wrong. I'm not quite sure what you mean about "semi-staged situation like Naked and Afraid" and I'm quite sure you don't either... but whatever. At least I got you to watch and comment! Thanks. I sourced camp, materials, and built my Naked and Afraid shelter in less than four hours (before sunset and after insertion) for two people (which stood solid for 21 days and is still standing over a year later) in the rain forest, east of the Rio Bravo Conservation area of Belize. In fact, Melvis is still conducting tours for visitors to my camp and I've seen recent pictures. By "Bushmasters" I'm guessing you're referring to Ian? it's a bit vague to reference a company rather than an individual. (Not wise to reference people I'm connected with.) As for using "Y" shaped wood or material... I teach that same technique every time I take a group out buddy. Also, I used the same technique for this shelter and the one I built for Discovery. Thanks again. Additionally... for Naked and Afraid, I sourced camp, sustainable food, sustainable clean water, built my shelter, made fire, and started making clothes within the first 72 hours sir. Remember, at the end of the day... it's television. A story has to be created, produced, and delivered with the approval of the network. 21 days equals over 400 hours of footage and as much as viewers want to see us succeed, they want to see us suffer all the way there. You sound more like a keyboard-survivalist who is challenging me. If you really had a solid understanding of what you are describing here, you'd know there is no shelter on this planet that will keep chitras or other bugs out. (our mosquito net proved that in the episode) Let's see you show me how it's done Lew. I also noticed you don't have a single video up to compare it to. It must be easy to criticize the work of others when you have no content yourself. Don't talk about it... be about it! Period. Now, there's a challenge! Remember, in a survival situation, it's imperative to keep calm and stay focused. There's no reason to rush anything unless you are in danger. (and it's a good way to hurt yourself at the same time) You will not outrun, out smart, or out muscle nature. She will crush you if you try. Working with nature is the only way to win. Try a more positive approach next time bud. I like connecting with other good folks and rarely take the time to respond to this level of crap... but I made a special exception just for you buddy! Thanks again for commenting and watching this video. p.s. I found this message in the spam folder because you referenced another channel's video. Try not to do that in the future if you'd like me to read your comment. Best, AP

      Hey thanks Mike. It was a cool hike. We only had coordinates and we found a spring we weren't looking for. Can't complain about that!

    I really love these videos, a couple years ago around when I was 15 a bunch of my friends went out into the forest to try and live with nithing. I also live in florida around citrus county and the largest problem about florida is there is very little clay and rocks to make hachets and other tools

      Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, there aren't many places to find rock or clay in Florida. I was taught that indigenous people traded for points and other hard tools. Clay is usually in pockets and tough to find. Citrus county is pretty cool man. Hit us up about a group survival adventure. We'd love to get you out there!

      +stepitup It depends on the size of the fish and the number caught. Thanks for watching.

    lol i dont thinks 110% Humidity is a thing The highest humidity ever recorded was a 95 degrees Fahrenheit dew point in Saudi Arabia in 2003. The dew point is correlated with relative humidity; theoretically, humidity could reach saturation at 100 percent and there is no higher percentage that humidity could possibly reach.

      +Plant Gollum Ha ha ha! Great attention to detail. No, it's more of a local thing we say. We use this term when it's raining or when there's so much humidity it feels like we're in the "fishbowl." The Florida swamp is a difficult location to survive in. The heat and humidity, alone, is mind-numbing sometimes. Thanks for watching and commenting!
