  • In this short Video I am making a fire on the side of a lake in Florida with a storm coming in behind me. The ground is wet. Notice my back is surrounded with foliage as a barrier. I am using a PureFire Tactical Fire Magnesium Fire Starter (Striker). I sourced my tinder for bundle from palmettos (monkey fur), wrapped it in dry banana leaves along with some small twigs, and then again in green leaves. The green leaves have a waxy cuticle on the outside that provides a solid moisture barrier.
These fire starters are the best on the market. They have been used by survivalists on TV Programs such as Discovery's Naked and Afraid, National Geographic's Mygrations, and History's Alone. They are made by hand of high-grade magnesium which is softer than most. The magnesium peels off instead of flaking off like cheaper-made look a likes. They are light weight and the one I use in this video even has a hollow handle to store tinder and fat wood in to keep it waterproof.
They are available affordably at: www.purefiretactical.com/
I never leave home without my SPOT GEN 3 Transponder. You can see it clearly in bright orange on the back of my backpack.
