Off The Beaten Path
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 ม.ค. 2021
Off the Beaten Path is all about just that, getting off the beaten path. I am based on the border in North East Victoria so many of the trips I'll film will be in the Victorian High Country. In addition to trip video's I'll be doing reviews of products that I purchase and use on my trips.
My videos aren't likely to be the hardcore rock crawling, mud slogging, 5hrs to travel 50m type videos. I try and keep them informative about the area's I visit and give you some of the story and show a bit more rather than just the highlights, without making the video's too long.
Thanks For Watching!

Exploring Stanley Forest
In the conclusion to our VIC High Country Trip I take Luca and Paul to explore the Stanley Forest, local to me, located between Yackandandah and Stanley townships, not far from Beechworth.
We start tackling Wally's Track and the Stanley Jeep Track to the summit of Mt Stanley before heading to take on the locally infamous Long Tom Bypass Track, topped off with a visit to the Magic Forest and some local mining history at the Rechabite Mine.

Man those Californian Redwoods are just awesome! Got a small plantation down here just out of Warburton , I could stay there all day 👌 Very nice shot of Mitta/ lake Hume?
You are correct, you don't drive enough of that stuff but, you need to get out and walk and look and learn and NOT rely on other's experience. You need to watch other's wheel placement through the same obstacle and that is how you learn, gain knowledge and get a perspective from out of the car, not sit on your arse and rely on the spotter every time it looks rough.
Great vid mate. "ALL OF IT". Cheers, and thank you. BobbyB.
That's a good area for me to explore. I live at Lurg, south west of Wangaratta. I have been up the old Long Tom as a passenger in a very capable 80series. Twin locked auto. I would never have attempted it in my Hilux. Good video mate. Cheers 👍🐕🤠
Great video, well done mate. I know that area well. I've never driven that Long Tom Track, and I'm not in a hurry to after watching this. Haha I have driven the other one that you turned off, the easy one. I used to drive Wally's in a Suzuki Sierra back in the 1990's. I've driven down Mt Stanley Jeep Track in the rain In a Ford Ranger with a 3" lift. It was crazy slippery. Low range, hill descent on and still slipping everywhere. I was glad to see the bottom I can tell you. I usually drive into Wallaby Mine from the other side, the steep side. That's a bit of a sketchy track in itself, and about as scary as I like to go. Any steeper and rougher and I'm out of my comfort zone. I really enjoy your casual videos mate. 👍👍
That's a good area to do some 4wding 😊
Meal looked great.
Thx mate, yeah Dan does a top job! He's a great bush cook and puts a lot of effort in.
the hotel must car park entrance must have been fixed ?
Hey brett thanks for watching not sure exactly what your comment is referring to?
Try the dead end track. There is a trig point marker. Great views of Hotham, Feathertop, thr Horn and Mt Buffalo.
thanks for the heads up will check that out on a future trip!
Nice vid mate! Is this the large size Drifta fire pit?
Thx Calvin, nice to see some of the older stuff on the channel still getting a watch! Yes it's the large firepit.
This is a great video thanks for sharing this trip. I'm coming back this way in January from my road trip to Queensland in a 2wd. This video has been really helpful working out my trip.
Great, glad it was helpful there's some excellent spots along the Omeo Highway, hope you have a great trip.
Awesome group of guys on your trips Jason, I also watch Dans channel, you guys are great together and Paul and Luca just top it off 👌👌 I definitely vote for keeping the radio chatter, and more campsite shots and car setups/camp setups etc 👍 Great work Jason👍 Look forward to the next one
Thx for the feedback James. Yeah they're a great bunch. Paul and Luca both have a lot of experience, definitely a bonus having them along. Dan does a great job with his video's building the story's, it's something I'm working on including more.
We tried driving Gunns via the Buckland valley but it was seasonally closed. Definitely have to tick this off perhaps when hitting Blue Rag next. Thanks again Jason
Yeah mate it is one that is seasonally closed, I should have mentioned that in the video, will be open again end of October. Sorry about that.
Definitely be putting this in my list to drive one day. Thanks Jase for doing this whole trip mate, some great tracks covered.
Thx mate, Devils Hollow was a bit of a must do after your video a while back. Gunns and Albion are definitely worth the drive.
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus need to camp there Jase, the sunset and sunrises are amazing. Cheers 👍🏼
Thanks mate, definitely will be, take the DOT I reckon.
Great video and an awesome trip Jase. Thanks for showing it from a different angle. Definitely helps with trip planning 👍👍 Take care mate
@@James_James01 thx mate much appreciated!
That was great, I always wondered what that ridge would be like to drive. Ive spent too much time in the valleys below . Probably could have found a better camp spot . Keep up the good work, thanks
Thx Glenn, it was a cracking drive and one I'll definitely do again.
Great video mate, interesting track id like to try one day. Heaps of trees down, wish I could of collected some for firewood at home 🏡

@@melburnian1979 cheers mate. I’ve loved this series by Jase, given me so much inspiration to hit some of these tracks.
Great drive mate, so good the views and the terrain. I love ridge drives. If you want another vehicle to do the track with the van I'll come along. Got all the gear and all the time as well. I'm not far from Albury, just a few hours. Cheers, BobbyB.
Thx Bobby, would love to catch up sometime! Agree Gunns Track coubled with the Albion Track was, while not a difficult drive definitely epic for scenery.
Another great video. I remember you doing Gunns track from the other direction. The views from this way are beautiful. So would you have a preference on which way is better?
Hey Gary, well remembered. Honestly both directions are pretty epic, as I have the camera usually on the passenger side going this direction probably captured more. I'ts a great drive either way, the first direction I did the driver is closer to the edge on the big drop off sections which probably made that a bit more hairy to do. Sorry that probably doesn't help does it but it's pretty awesome whichever direction you do it.
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus thanks and I definately like these ridge line tracks as well. I normally solo drive so can’t bang on enough on how informative your vids are showing the whole track. Very much appreciated. Cheers!
Thx Gary much appreciated!
Awesome drive thanks Jason, definitely on the must‐do list now! Just love ridgetop drives & Blue Rag is getting so busy, this & Buffalo Range are equally as good if not better and less busy 😉
Thx Ian, couldn't agree more. Gunns in particular every bit as good as Blue Rag without the traffic. You could have a great day trip from Bright entering where we exited and taking Avalon, onto Gunns then onto Dargo High Plains and doing Blue Rag and heading back...
Great track mate and one i'll put o my list of tracks to do. Amazing the difference between the GoPro and iPhone footage....I felt that as well as better showing steepness of gradients, the colour vision quality was better although this changed when you went to the Hero 7 form outside view. Alos I'm a fan of the uhf chatter between the guys.
Hey Mark, yeah thanks it's an epic track. Quality is an interesting one as what you see on youtube is very different to the raw footage I take. The GO Pro shoots at 2K and it's generally crystal clear however by the time it's compressed for streaming on youtube you get a lot of motion blur. The difference in demonstrating the gradient though was quite pronounced. Might look into getting another camera to match external footage with internal UHF audio :-) Thanks for watching and commenting.
Another cracker video Jason. Smart move on avoiding Matheson. I came up it from Harrison’s in the dry in March this year and I swear my pants were not dry by the end of the steep section. This was captured in my video “VHC with a kid from Kansas PT2”. In that video I also camped at Devils Hollow after being inspired by Krusty as well. It’s my absolute favourite spot in the high country now, and will be back there again. Cheers.
Thanks again Jason.
Thx Michael, glad you enjoyed it mate, appreciate your regular feedback!
Another fun trip. Love the chatter there about the LSD, that is exactly why I wont get a rear Locker in my Paj, I love the LSD. If anything I will go a front locker one day. Driving through the fog/light rain looked really cook. We copped that in The Watagans recently and it was a wicked feeling to be driving through it.
Thx Mick, yeah bit different having the camera in the car, prefer the higher angle of the external mount but sometimes some good stuff over the UHF. Was a lot of atmosphere this leg and some great scenery. Lunch at Devils Hollow was epic.
As a now 81 year old I am appreciating your videos of the High Country and looking forward to doing more in the dry weather. Have been on a lot of your tracks and sometimes have a bit of a pucker, however appreciate it. Laurie Marlin from the Idlers Club living at Bairnsdale.
Thx Lauire really appreciate your feedback and comments. Check out next weeks video for an epic ridgeline track that no one talks about!
I pay scant attention to Hema's ratings. They are so out of date to be useless. Given the rotation of track grading, they have not kept up with conditions and therefore are inaccurate. As you know, conditions can change season to season and Hema just do not put the effort in to keep up to date.
Yeah have to agree, way out of date in many instances... it's a shame as would be a useful resource for newbies..
I do believe they spent 3+ months out in the VHC earlier this year for the purpose of updating g their maps. So will be interesting to see what comes of that with future updates of their maps.
@@endless4x4 Yeah maybe the next release will actually have some updates. Last couple have been pretty much cosmetic changes.
Luca is always the hero in your adventures. You should hire him out to other offroaders!
He definitely is! Big supporter of the channel.
Excellent vid and an awesome route , can’t help but think you will come to grief with the road tyres one day . Have you changed them yet ?
Yeah this was the second last trip with them. :-) Much better now. Tyre upgrade video coming soon.

Another great video , nicely edited and great Track information. Great trip❤
Thx mate certainly was. Lots of great memories off this one!
My favourite video to date. I definitely will do that one for sure. I'm pretty sure your at Gavs camp at Devils Hollow. Those rocks is where he saw the snake. Luckly you didn't have the strong winds he had over that bluff. Much enjoyed mate. Cheers, BobbyB.
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it. Bit of exploring that ended up taking some side tracks. Can find some gems that way. Devils hollow was awesome love to camp there sometime.
Two concerns: 1. was there a winch blanket used while winching? and 2. Why did the winch assistant stand between the anchor point and the vehicle? Also, the tyre pressures looked too high.
Thx Graham, no we didn't use a winch blanket, conventional wisdom recommends them but I've seen more than enough evidence they don't make a huge difference. Second point is a camera issue. Mostly filmed with GO Pro's they have a fisheye style lens that distorts things a bit. i.e. everything gets flattened a bit and looks closer than it is. Luca was always out of the direct line. Tyre pressures - possibly could have been lower but these are highway terrains and I didn't want to wreck the sidewall or pop them off the bead. A few PSI less might have helped. They were already at 20 PSI.
Reg in Alb/Wod says...Excellent work Jason. First time in area and leading a trip to here in October. Thanks for heads up.
Great its an excellent area to explore. Just make sure you go after the seasonal track closures are finished.
Quite the drive that one Jase. Hope you supplied Luca drinks all night at camp. 👍🏼 Wouldn’t attempt this in the wet solo? twin locked ? Just incase it’s wet if I go? Pretty sure Collins Hut has been pulled down, but I could be wrong. It was in a bad state a year or so ago. Bet ya loving having some real tyres these days.
Mate in the wet, solo, twin locked with decent tyres I think you'd be fine. Luca and Paul both drove the whole track no issues and they're both twin locked running decent muddies. Thanks for the heads up on Collins Hut, I haven't been there for a few years and it was in a pretty bad state then. Definitely glad to have some decent tyres on now but it was interesting to see how far I could go on highway terrains and confirm that really its only in extreme terrain it makes a big difference.
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus looking forward to how the cruiser goes on the new tyres. I’m only running AT’s might give it a shot one day soon.
Not sure what date you did this, but looks like it's changed a bit since we were there. We did this 8th-June, track was a lot muddier. We got stuck at the point 8:49, again just around the corner. That "rock wall" at 15:40 was a vertical mud wall. Hit that in the dark about 7pm, in the rain. We couldn't get up it, ended up turning around and back down in the dark/wet. Another 3-4 groups behind us, dozens of vehicles all did the same
Hey mate, I’m going to ask Jase the same question. In the dry this track would be easily accessible? Obviously it has its challenges in the wet. Troopy twin locked, lift on 33’s. Maybe with a Luca to help me out if I get stuck. 🤣 TIA. 👍🏼
Yeah have heard that it's a bit worse for wear since we went through. This was early Jan (yes I'm that far behind in editing) so couple of months more traffic prior to seasonal closures definitely could have chewed it up.
might have to take back my earlier comment Krusty, sounds like conditions have markedly worsened on this one. Might be a suck it and see situation.
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus don’t think that area is a seasonal closure area, could be wrong. By the time I get around to getting there it will be open even if it was. 🤦🏽 The old troopy is always up for a bit of challenge, just hard to recover myself ! That’s for showing this mate 👍🏼
@@aguyandhistroopy think you're right mate so anytime you're ready hit it! I'll look forward to the video!
Great review, thank you. Swayed me to wait until something better is available. I sold my HX1 a couple of years back, regretting that about now.
thx mate appreciate the feedback. Yeah I actually preferred the HX1 but the power connector on those was not a great design.
Great job of showing the craziness of scrubby creek trk. Did it a few years ago go once in the dry which was no hassle and then twice in the wet. Not as wet as when you did it but needed the winch when wet. Might get a video out from one of the wet trips. But it has definitely deteriorated since then so u did well in those AT’s.
Thx mate, yeah I last did it 4yrs ago in the dry, in my Paj, which had both traction control and a rear locker. So had no issues then, track very different now for sure:-)
A bit of a tough endurance along that ruggered track. Enjoyable to watch.
Hey Trev, definitely called for that. Was quite happy with how the Sherpa winch performed.
Might have missed it but how long did the track take you from the start of scrubby creek to after the rover crossing?
First 2km with me winching a lot took about 2hrs for everyone to get up, next 5km took only probably half an hour. l
With pajero not so many winching?😮
lol maybe not but I'd just need a new transfer case ever 30,000km...
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus 🤣🤦🏽
Jason, This was an excelllent vid really enjoyed it it was a proper mud and guts trip. Keep them coming pal. your fan from ireland 🇮🇪
Thx mate, we got a bit more than we bargained for but all the vehicles handled it well! Definitely memorable! Awesome you're watching from Ireland!
Crazy trip mate. That winch sure got a work out. Have to say though I was cringing every time I saw Luca or the other guy so close to that winch rope especially when under pressure. No blanket and standing right in the dead zone.
Winch did get a work out. The camera makes it look a lot closer than it was, he was forward and off to the side of where any recoil would be.
That was bloody hectic mate. Trusty Luca on the job. Thanks for sharing
Hectic definitely sums it up. Solid stint from Luca running the winch rope. I hope I'm half as fit with half as much eneregy at his age!
Interesting track...lots of winching and that creek crossing was soooo wide.
Yeah the final crossing was definitely one of the widest I've done. We were lucky it wasn't too deep. Thanks for watching!
Good one mate, and much enjoyed. All said and done I think the tyres did pretty well for what they are. I didn't expect you to get as far as you did. Lovely view up the top of Scrubby Track. Cheers mate, BobbyB.
Yeah you and me both Bobby. As Luca said he's throwing the rule book out on what's possible. Was a great drive, even if some of us winched a fair amount of it. Literally like an hour and half for me to do the first 2km of the track...
Thanks for another great video Jason love your content.
Thx Mate, really appreciate the feedback. This was an epic trip none of us will soon forget!
Hi There! 2 years on, are you still happy with Bushskinz side steps Thanks!
Yes they're a well made bit of kit. If I was getting side steps for my Paj again I'd go for them again.
I got stuck in there for hours, lots of big pot holes full of water and muddy there.
I could see that happening for sure. Particularly at this time of year. Was February when we drove it, so closer to summer than winter. Hope you had a good time still!
It’s definitely a dry weather track, I drove Junction Spur a couple of years back to the Pinnacles, there’s a section there you would have no chance of getting up in the wet. I reckon you guys need to bunch up a bit more in them conditions, I case something goes wrong with the last vehicles. Nothings gunna go wrong up front… well maybe !! 🤦🏽🤣 Look forward to the next one.
Yeah wet weather changes everything! We generally stay pretty close, Dan and Paul weren't actually far behind Luca and I, just everyone drives at their own pace generally, and yeah, what could go wrong up front? Those trees just jump out at you sometimes.
Great looking track and one i'll try. Question - if you are going up one of those steep narrow bits and come across someone going the other way, who gives way and goes back?
The million dollar question. General rule of thumb is the one coming down gives way, but it generally depends on a host of things, who has somewhere they can pull over etc generally you work it out with the person.
Well you really did stuff that part up didn't you. Lucky though it could have been much worse, I thought it was going to be. Love how green the area got as well.
Thx mate, yeah very close to those tree's. Missed them by 'that' much. Was an epic trip along those 3km of track.
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus looked like some muddy fun for sure
Definitely was mate!
My brother and I did the descent in the dry from Billy Goat via Castle Hill, Junction and Castleburn March 2024 in a Nav with 50mm lift and 33s. Junction was very overgrown and Castleburn was deeply rutted by large wheel 4x4 and a No Through Road sign was posted at the junction with Black Range Track, we used Black Range and McDonald to get back to Dargo road. From videos we had seen before our trip on Scrubby Creek it was a brave move on your part to do it in the rain. Enjoyed the video
Thx mate, yeah doesn't surprise me Castleburn was closed by March. I'm guessing mostly for the section that was nearly collapsed into the river. We were lucky when we went through, was wet but hadn't been too rutted up yet and mostly had a a solid base. Thx for the heads up on Junction still on my list to get back and drive again sometime!.
