  • Running out of fuel in a modern diesel can be more of an issue than you might think (at least if you are me!). I found out the hard way that rarely is it as simple as just getting more diesel and topping up the tank

Don’t crack the lines on a common rail diesel. Pump the pressure up and keep cranking. It will start.

Tried that this time, manually priming the fuel pump just wasn't going to get there... Have heard it work for some people.

A mate of mine has a Hilux with a dodgy fuel gauge and he rang me one evening to come and rescue him when it ran out.
Grabbed my Jerry Can and a funnel and got some fuel, did the whole priming pump thing and it was still a dog to get going again.
Took quite a while and a lot of cranking.
I'm pretty wary with mine as it only has a 67 litre tank in it.

Yeah defintely something to keep an eye on with diesels! We tried priming the pump manually but too much air had gotten into the injectors.

I certainly didn't know that. I thought it was a simple matter of filling up and priming. I sharn't be running out of diesel thats for sure. Thanks Jase, (beards looking good mate) cheers, BobbyB.

I always thought you’d have somewhere between 50-70km left once the fuel warning light came on ? I understand different vehicles would have different ranges but it would be interesting to find out what your range would be. Anyway lesson learnt mate , thanks for posting this . Looking forward to your next adventure. 👍

yeah probably did have that. Just being on the phone I had no idea when it came on as I didn't notice... probably just after I left benalla..... yeah live and learn...

yep, live and learn.... especially with a diesel where it's not as simple as just top it up.....

I used to have an EH Holden that would run out of fuel at quarter tank, you'd be driving along, the engine would splutter, you'd look at the fuel gauge just in time for the needle to snap down to empty, lol. Caught me out a couple of times.

Sounds like a classic! Wish I could blame a faulty gauge this time but just driver error. :-)

    Jase!!!!
Light may have been on for 80kms or more???, it’s a fair hike between Albury and Benalla, what around 100kms+ ?
I know my GU 42 has 8L left when light comes on. Only one way to check, when light comes on, measure exactly what’s in tank so in a pickle you know what your reserve is!
In saying that being an old indirect injection diesel, the 42 doesn’t need injectors cracked and it will fire and run rough for a few moments until all the air is out of fuel lines and away you go.
Great video to make people aware Jase 👍

Thx mate. Yeah Albury to Benalla is about 115km give or take. So I think the light probably came on somewhere betwen benalla and wangaratta. Just one of those things, I knew I needed fuel, but got distracted with a phone call and was on auto pilot....

      @OffTheBeatenPathAus  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

lol well I never ran the paj out of diesel completely, it did have a handy distance to empty indicator which helped.....

My VX Commodore also had a faulty fuel guage. Must have been a "feature" of that car.

Ours would go forever on the top 3/4 of the tank and hardly make it up the driveway on the last 1/4.
