Glad you are going to have a great hay crop this year. Looking forward to seeing you getting it harvested.
Thanks. The extended forecast has dry weather next week. Crossing our fingers!
Just like us... waiting for the ground to dry up.....The hay looks great but the ground is really soft... I love your barn, built the way dairy barns should be built. Maybe you could build another storage building with rocks and concrete, God knows you've got a few rocks around...🤣🤣🤣. Thanks Dave.
Yeah, that barn loft definitely is a crown jewel. I do the same thing with the hayloft. I always try to wear a mask when I’m doing that that’s when my sinuses get clogged.
Yeah I should wear a mask…but I always forget. The dust on the floor is full of seed, great for reseeding areas that get muddy in spring.
Morning DAVE! Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice stand of hay!
Thanks. It will be nice once the weather turns and I can bale it.
Hope you get some dry days to make some decent hay. There's a lot of stuff out there.
We may be setting tonnage records, but not quality records. This stuff will be stemmy once we cut it.
Could be the west coast of Finland...I´d rather use a 20 t. excavator with rake.
Glad to see you saved that old barn, They are getting hard to find.
Thanks. We see it as our responsibility to the neighborhood to keep the farm as good as we found it cared for by the original family that owned it.
I sold my square baler this year, I've owned it for 22 years but I never used it to bale hay only straw. Only going to be using round baler from now on.
We still have a strong market for square bales of hay and straw.
Them 336s are awesome balers. I wish i would have kept mine.
Thanks. We’ve had for over 20 years. 1000-1500 bales per year. Used to make a lot more. Rarely misses a bale.
That’s a great old barn - nice job keeping it standing strong…👍
Thanks. We’re blessed to have it on the farm.
I like the alley barn. It's gone, but we milked in a similar barn built in 1880 with a addition in the 1920s. The Finns are good people. This year comes with challenges. Thank you Dave.
Thanks. The tradition of Minnesota dairy barns is passing quickly. Happy to have one to save.
Good morning. Almost got down to freezing here last night. I don't know when we are going to see 3 days without rain. I can get by on 2 if I make baleage out of the stuff at home but the ground needs to dry some even for that.
Long range looks good for four days of sun starting July 8th.
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn That's what I saw too. That's a while to wait yet.
Nice, well built old barn! Maintenance is key to everything lasting! Being used is also important! Once a building is no longer used, (with or without maintenance) they tend to deteriorate. Easyouts can work very well.. they can make nightmares too.. but usually what we start with first. I can hear the water as you're walking.. Happy Heifers!!!
Thanks. The barn is historic with some function left. I could use some of your summer heat and wind right about now to fill it back up with square bales.
Good morning Dawn and Dave ☕☕☕
Morning Ed.
Good morning Dave and Dawn! Jay finally got to mow the hay here on Thursday. On Friday morning, it rained over 2 inches. Wasn’t forecasted! It’s enough to make an old sow eat her pigs!
That’s sad but that’s a great expression! We were down in LaCrosse last week and shocked to see how much cut hay was down, brown and getting rained on.
A WASTE OF TIME .
didn't you know, rocks grow back overnight ;<)
Thats how New England Rock walls came about
Our road had one of those nice washed out culvert holes too. They are pretty proud of that reostat. I might have been tempted to do some creative wiring for that price.
Yup, we got wacked with around 5 inches over the weekend too.
Wow. What a different year than last year was for you. That's a lot of water. We've been dry for about 2 weeks and had 92+ degree temps for the last week. There was rain in our area all day today, but we only got about 1/2 inch, which I was grateful for. Some places in our area got tons of rain today. For some reason, it keeps missing us.
Yeah and we have more rain in the forecast. At least we have lots of pasture😊
Yup it's either feast or famine when it come to moisture
Isn’t that so. Drought three of the last four years…now this.
You need a rock bucket so you can knock the dirt loose. I’ve done several fields like this, it’s to much work to carry them one at a time away. Back in early 2000’s I removed several thousand rocks like that but with a rented excavator and my dump trailer.
I like that dodge Cummins u never let us see
It’s our hard working hauler. Three quarter ton; low miles.
Quite a difference from last year! 4 inches of rain here over the last 5 days. And sitting at 17.5 inches of precipitation after one of the driest winters in recent years!
Opposite here, very dry. Tractor looks easy enough to service. Excellent video…👍
Thanks. I thought you guys had some big storms. Are you getting heat?
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn Hit and bone dry here for several weeks and no rain in the 10 day forecast.
It’s frustrating when the rain won’t quit. It may be July before we can bale dry hay.
Well that’s not good…typical Minnesota statement when something turns to cow cookies! Morning Dave!
I guess the drought is over😅
Way too much rain. Looks like you are still doing your job even after retirement.👍 Sure would have been nice if the switch would have lasted longer. At least it's a simple fix.
Yeah, it’s a 2010 tractor with 2800 hours. Seems early for AC failure.
What i woulda done for some of this water last year. . . . Great video Dave!
Thanks. Looks like we’ll have lots of hay this year.
I'd love to see what the profits CaseIH, Mother Deere and the rest make on parts....I'd bet it's insane. Glad to see you didn't get washed away with the rain storm this week....We're at 10" for May and June so far, no cutting hay here for awhile...Sure hope we get some drier weather in July....Thanks Dave.
I think you guys got hit harder than us.
Good morning Dawn and Dave ☕☕☕ It's amazing what water can do! In '96 and '07, it tore out 3' to 8' diameter culverts 20' to 60' long.. seeing an 8x60 culvert standing up like a rocket preparing for launch, is impressive. At least you didn't have to evacuate the Freon after it was charged.. now you are ready for summer!!
We were lucky. Eight inches fell up west of Will’s Far Away Farm.
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn I've heard of places in the Dakotas that got over 12" in a day.. lots of water around there!!
I think you've got the moisture worse. I know roads are closed by Hutchinson. Also heard basements are flooding by Watertown. The Minnesota is near flood stage, but the houses in the bottom are alright since they built a levie. Thank you Dave.
I heard more rain is hitting down there today.
I don't see rocks, I see money If you let landscapers in to help themselves I'm sure they would at least pay you something for them..
That rye looks awesome.....I'm the one who asked for all the rain and got it, maybe it will work if I ask for a couple of dryer months now so we can put up hay😉. Thanks Dave.
What the hell was on her head
Mosquito net. Works for gnats and biting flies too. It’s a terrible year for bugs this year. Ticks are aggressive too.
Things are growing nicely for you. It's one of those years no good for spring planting, just too wet. I'll have an update on the rye here tonight or tomorrow.
Great. You see the difference in my rye fields. Field #1 was planted too early which gave weeds a head start. The big field got leveled by deer last fall but it didn’t seem to hurt it.
That's some nice rye. The oats around here is starting to head out. Hopefully you get a stretch of nice weather to make hay. Those new cabs get pretty warm without air-conditioning.🥵
Thanks. Yeah no ac is unbearable. I’ve got a guy to fix it.
Great video and update Dave. That rye looks really tall. I have no experience with rye and all, so I find it interesting.
Thanks Charlie. I’m very excited to see this work. I’ve never raised it either.
Morning from the lake place, coffee is on.
Morning Patrick. How’s fishing?
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn , only been fishing once so far just finishing up the last few details on the house, but hopefully since it’s Father’s Day gonna be going out in a couple hours and I’ll see if I can’t catch something worth maybe trading for some honey! lol
@@patrickbachman2184 good luck. Stay safe. Happy Father’s Day.
I dont think i have ever seen colored carrots in my life. . ?
Dawn buys them every year and plants them in stages. They taste sweet.
Thank you Dave. Your videos always bring back memories. I won't mention what spell check wanted me to say. Never combined rye. The always cut it , and hayed it while it was green. Yeah the mustard. Central Wisconsin small grain us heading. All corn, and beans around me. Thank you again.
I’m hoping this rye will be early enough that I can get it done in late July and spread the risk out for my small grain cash crop.
The crops look good this year! Rye makes great straw
Good. We use lots of round bales for bedding and we sell square bales.
Great crop tour like to see the variety on a small farm
Thanks. Anxious to get started haying.
A little moisture and some mild weather.. makes things grow! Timing is everything! Our west hayfield and a spot in one of the pastures, both have a little strip of wheat growing. Maybe 10 plants in each. Neither has ever had wheat on or near them. And no, neither get manure last year.. so 🤔 Radish and mustard happen. Especially a wet spring. Like vetch, those hard round seeds can lay in the ground for over 50 years.. pretty amazing! I'll bet your AC just needs to be charged. Low pressure switch keeps the pump from coming on.
Yeah, I’ve got a friend with all the gear. Im going to ask for help.
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn good idea 👍
Good morning Dawn and Dave ☕☕☕
Morning Ed
Too much walking with that skid steer. Get a dump trailer or truck.
They have rock grinder crusher the attaches to a big tractor and grinds the rocks to power, might be worth looking into.
Our farm is located in the rolling hills of the Palouse region in Washington state. The glacier from the last ice age fortunately just missed our area. As a result, the 3300 acres that we farm is almost completely free of rocks, except for about 40 acres. We were left with some of the best fertile soil in the world. In some areas, the soil is 100 feet deep before reaching bedrock. But 120 miles to the NW are some of the worst rocky scablands where the topsoil was swept away in a matter of about 2 days down to bedrock, 18,000 - 15,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. At that time, the massive Glacial Lake Missoula (Montana) formed from the melting glaciers to the north. Then, an ice dam suddenly broke and flooded large parts of northern Idaho and central/southern Washington. The water flowed very swiftly, sweeping away the topsoil and depositing boulders everywhere. The water flowed down the Columbia River and out to the Pacific Ocean near Portland, Oregon. Geologists say that during that two-day stretch, the quantity of flowing water amounted to about 10X the volume of every other river in the world combined. It is interesting to drive around the area and see the results or that flood today.
Fascinating.
Haven't seen that oiler, that looks pretty neat. Hope it works well for you!
It’s very well made and serves a dual purpose of scratching post.
