  • The third part in our series restoring a 1975 Versatile swather for use on our organic grain and Angus beef cattle farm. We're a small family farm making use of old equipment and practices ignored by industrial agriculture. #familyfarm, #oats, #versatile, #organicfarming,

    I'm guessing you meant 1830s when the reaper was introduced? Looks like you did a great job on the swather restoration.👌 Nice when the wife does the equipment shopping once in awhile. I see four more subscribers to go.👍

    Horn plastics in Fargo, ND for a poly floor on top of your new plywood floor. And good luck finding tires for the old girl.

    Swatting was part of the magic of small grain harvest. The canvas with the lats ( probably wrong spelling. ) was suspended on wire to avoid rodent damage. Thank you again for taking me back there Dave.
    Two of my brothers disapproved of Dad's primitive practices, but my eldest Brother, and I understood Dad enjoyed doing it that way.
    Incidentally my folks fed nine of us, and were in the black at the end.
    Mostly from 200 acres, and Holsteins.

    That old girl has another 50 years left in er easy....such simple design, that lasted forever. Todays engineers should take a step back into time and learn what endured time.....Now you better find some decals and give er a fresh coat of red and yellow...Neighbor Dave will get home and think you bought a new swather. lol. Thanks Dave for taking us along.

      Oats are becoming a thing in Iowa as people get back to crop rotation. I hear the food grade mills pay seven dollars a bushel.

    • @Rollinghillsfarmsmn
      @Rollinghillsfarmsmn  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t know about wheat. Oats can be cut once the top 5 inches have turned golden. Often the straw is still partially green. If the tops turn brown it’s too dry and should be straight cut.

    always awesome to watch ya'r channel. Just to think that in Winnipeg there were once three Swather manufactures and today only one is left. CCIL (Canadian Co-operative Implements Ltd) Killberry or Macdon and Versatile.
    Personally I have to agree the old way is sometimes the better way to harvest crops and other things too, sometimes sure wish manufactures still made simple easier to work on and smaller equipment what they used to do and a farmer could fix it himself.
    keep them videos comin'

      Thanks. Our weather is just a wetter version of North Dakota or even Manitoba so I find myself watching TH-camrs from up north more than the row crop guys in southern MN or Wisconsin.

    Nice job on the swather Dave👍 10.00-20s on the spreader? I'm running my spreader tires to failure, which could be anytime I use it. I expect I'm going to have to convert it to something else at that point. 10.00s you might find in someone's shed my 8.50s are basically a waste of time looking. I have some 9.00s on Dayton rims but they aren't much better than what's on the spreader now.

      Ya.. they used too thin and not enough resin .. out IH spreader ha the original marine plywood.. tired, but still good enough. The old NH spreader, we put 14 guage steel over the original treated tongue and groove floor.. that was 40 years ago..
