An Encounter with "Gut Destroyer" Claims
Originally intended for an upload to my Instagram page (hence the vertical orientation), this is a series of points I wanted to make regarding a sponsored ad by Dr. Josh Axe that I saw while scrolling through stories. The ad had a list of ten (10) items that were labeled as "gut destroyers" with little in the way of nuance, and I had a problem with that.
Axe is well known in the functional medicine world, and while this video should not be taken as support or condemnation of entire fields, it *is* an attempt to caution against fear mongering that one might frequently encounter in many corners of functional medicine.
Wholesale alarmism and fear are rarely helpful when it comes to food and commonly used products. What *is* helpful are considering context and being informed about the likelihood of harm based on relevant factors (e.g. concentrations, mode of ingestion/exposure, genetic differences, chronic accumulations/loads, the rest of one's diet, exercise, sleep quality, etc.) Just listing items as "destroying" an entire organ/system is probably doing more harm than good.
This was an unrehearsed one-off video, so I apologize if it doesn't seem as polished as might be expected. As mentioned before, it was a quick recording that I originally did for my Instagram page, and those are usually more impromptu than what I put here on TH-cam.

    Is the red belt after the yellow belt in judo?

    • @JudoGeoff
      @JudoGeoff หลายเดือนก่อน

      @BonniePlushGaming red is a very senior belt in judo, so it's essentially after every other belt. In the systems I'm familiar with, red is the highest color, as it is the most senior of the "dan" ranks, coming after black belts. To be a little more thorough, sometimes "black belt" is used to refer to all ranks above the typical colored ranks regardless of whether belt is actually black. The lower colored ranks (which I mainly tall about in this video) are referred to as "kyu" ranks, while the ones above them are "dan" ranks. The first 5 dan ranks typically carry a black belt, with the next 3 (so 6th through 8th) having an alternating red-and-white belt, and the remaining (9th and 10th) being solid red. There are sometimes exceptions to this in offshoot disciplines, and I've seen rare occasion where one can have an alternating red-and-*black* belt (associated with around 4th and 5th dan as I recall), but those aren't typical in the world of judo. At any rate, red is almost always associated with the very highest ranks, above any other color or belt style. Hope that helps.

      @JudoGeoff 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Parts of it certainly were. Some of the early leg lifts with the ankle weights were tough, because one of the most painful early tasks was maintaining knee extension as I flexed my hip. Beyond that, the most uncomfortable/painful part that sticks out in my mind was probably the leg press exercise I was doing with a blood flow restriction cuff on my surgical quad. That made my leg feel like it was going to explode at times, and the pressure in my knee was not fun to endure at all. I was not a fan. None of it was unbearable, though, and there was plenty of it that (to me at least) fell into the realm of "hurts pretty good," as I knew that I needed to do the work to improve. Happy to talk more about the pain levels and how things have changed since then.

    • @JudoGeoff
      @JudoGeoff 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In this progression, I think that would be fair to say. Note that this was the ranking system used by a USA Judo-affiliated club where I was training when I recorded this video. I'm now training with a USJF-affiliated club in a different part of the country, and the early ranks have different colors. In *that* system, green is the first rank after white, so it's still rather novice-level (particularly given the very lax time-in-grade requirements for the first couple of promotions in that system). So just note that a color in one system may not denote the same rank when you see it in a different system.

    Sorry Geoff I thought between Green and Brown was the Blue belt?. Thanks for the great posts.

    • @JudoGeoff
      @JudoGeoff 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would like to do an update to this video at some point, because it was too specific to my personal experiences in belt systems. Many schools do have a blue belt, but the one I had the most training in at the time of this video did not use blue for adults. The IJF, however, currently does have blue, and my present schools follow that scheme. Specifically, they go as follows: white, green, blue, brown (x3), then black. So they have 1 less kyu (color) rank than the system I was in when I did this video. My *very* first school, however, was different again, having it go: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, black. So you will definitely see variation. There is no one "correct" progression, in my opinion. As long as you can establish parity/equivalence between ranks from different belt systems and have an understanding between schools, I don't see it as an issue. Others on the internet disagree, because as we all know, such internet disagreements are life or death ;) Thank you for your comment and your question, as they allowed me an opportunity to clarify a bit.

      Hey, so great to hear! I think it's great to cross-train in both (I'm struggling to do so right now because of time and physical limitations, but it's definitely something I recommend to those who are able). Note also that there are variations in the belt structures due to changes as political and regulatory bodies within the art have developed. For instance, the judo school I'm at now operates under a different set of belt colors than the one I was with when I made this video. Foe them, the progression is white, green, blue, and three ranks of brown. Thus, they have 6 total kyu (color belt) ranks instead of 7 like I was originally trained in. It didn't affect me, since I was already a brown belt when I moved over, but it can be relevant for some students for sure.

      Many techniques are referred to as "leg grab" escapes, and while I never called it such in *my* training (using the term "leg TRAP" instead), it wouldn't surprise me at all if some people call it a leg grab. • @JudoGeoff
      @JudoGeoff 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well thanks. I tried to make a decent bounce back. I have some lingering pain that may take a number of years to resolve completely, and there is still significant atrophy in that leg (mainly in the quad). However, I don't wear a brace to do anything anymore, and I can usually tolerate jogging and some jumping, though I have good and bad days. It is worth mentioning that I got Covid-19 last August and ended up suddenly having my workouts grind to a screeching halt. I actually lost ground and feel like I'm still regaining it in some ways. I ended up with major chronic fatigue (I still have issues) along with some serious depressive episodes on top of an intense grad school regimen. All of these came together to make working out at all a rarity during the entire fall semester, and things haven't been ideal this semester either. If I return to martial arts training, I'll likely brace the knee up for a while just to be safe, since it isn't as strong as it should be yet. This coming September will make me 2 years post-surgery, and most athletic folks seem to have made a more or less "full" recovery before that point. So I'm behind the curve on that. We will see. I hope to do more updates this summer, once my school obligations are taken care of. Feel free to follow along if you'd like. Thanks again for checking in 😊

    • @BryTheNiceGuy
      @BryTheNiceGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JudoGeoff that's nice to hear that you can do most things! One thing I've learned from other injuries is that if you don't make it your #1 priority then it will be hard to see the results you want. I injured my hamstring a while back and my ankle too. I basically ate a diet to recover, went to PT religiously, did PT exercises at home, did PT exercises at the gym, and even went to the park to practice more. Everything revolved around recovering the ankle and or hamstring. I'm doing the same with the ACL now because I don't want a limp and I also want to get back to soccer. So everything else becomes second priority.

      No I didn't. I was talking about traditional adult judo ranks. Typically, blue in judo is only used with kids, and it corresponds to the sankyu rank (the first rank of brown that is received). Then it would be followed by purple (again, only for kids), and then brown for the final rank before black. I believe I mention this in the video, but I'd have to go back and check. *Editing (on 28 Nov 2023) to add that the above remarks are also specific to the system I was in at the time of this video. Later comments have added clarifications based on an expanded perspective, as I don't want to give the impression that I think the USA Judo affiliation I was with when I recorded this video was the only game in town.

    Men, I think you should watch the whole film of this movie and continue with the sequel The Raid 2: Berandal. This movie is awesome, believe me.

      Thanks for the suggestion! I've been wanting to do that. I would even enjoy doing a full movie reaction if I had the time and ability to do the editing. Unfortunately, my life is so busy that that is difficult to do.

      I'm sorry to hear that. I've had injuries from a similar kind of situation (reckless teenage partner). The good news is that many people do return to sport after surgery. So don't give up on that.

    I’m at day 11 and my IT band is absolutely killing me. It’s super tight and hurts whenever I do my exercises. Did you experience any tightness in your IT band?

    i`ve been practicing Judo for several years, and got my brown belt, then i switched over to aikido, a very good kind of sports as well but judo was my thing. Noticed that you also are a brown belt

      Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I had a rather lengthy and inconsistent training history (and then tore my ACL in a randori session, grinding my training to a halt before the pandemic started). If I had been consistent since I began, I'd have likely made it to nidan by now. Oh well. I've never done formal aikido, though I've trained with friends who did some of it for a while. I did a number of years practicing with its Korean sister art hapkido, though, so there's that. Judo is a special thing for sure :)

    Have you watched in other stunts how far Jackie can freakin jump?

    Benny said in an interview that the kick and hit in the other direction actually happened...he said that Jackie hit him so hard that he had to ice his face down in between takes.

      @@cherylcohen5700 that's interesting. Thanks for sharing. I recall hearing that there was certainly a good deal of contact, but I didn't go back into interviews to pull up whether certain hits had stories behind them. I do sometimes wonder whether certain real-life hits are the ones that made it into the final take that we ultimately see, versus ones that did happen during filming but were cut out in favor of the final version.

    the first exercise is nice.good for training the traps and upperback.I personally for my Judo training like Tsurikomigoshi uchikomi(not sode)(Here a good video about Uchikomi: th-cam.com/video/HF8pLjDsLvA/w-d-xo.html ) and just normal weightlifting. But day by day i simply train footwork and the judo techniquue in front of a mirror.I i avoid using a belt because you can not finish the throw and the resistance is nothing like realy throwing someone.
