March 2024: Record High Stock Video Sales!!!
March 2024 stock video sales were my highest so far at $1,257. This is a new record for me, but I know a lot of you are doing even better.
Let's help other creators get there. Please post your average earnings or your highest month. What tips do you have for those of us still learning?
After publishing this, I received a note from Backbox founder and CEO Pat McGowan. He told me datasets are earnings from when companies use your video footage for non-media uses like self-driving vehicles, medical diagnostics and other computer learning. Sorry for the misinformation. The use case that I gave may be the case in the future.

Stock Video and Working with a Curator: Organization

      I just upload video to Blackbox. Then Blackbox sends it to Adobe, Shutterstock, Pond5, and 4-5 other agencies. That’s one of the main benefits of Blackbox. You upload and keyword once and they send 5-7 agencies. They add new agencies now and then. Blackbox doesn’t do stock photography so for that I have my own accounts.

I started uploading in February 2019 but only got to uploading much more in November 2021 when I moved back to Sydney from a country town. Have over 2000 vids each on three of my four ports. 01:57 you said a thousand dollars a month is not difficult to obtain. How does it work? About how many videos do you need for this goal?

    • @boycefitzgerald
      @boycefitzgerald 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It takes time and a lot depends on the quality of your clips and the demand for the type of content you upload. The number of clips is the least important indicator. For example, if you shoot medical or science content, that is going to generate different sales than if you shoot cooking content. Every person’s portfolio looks different and has a different trajectory. One person I work with has just over 2,000 clips online and he makes well over $1,300 a month. I have 6,000 clips (nature, senior lifestyle, travel) and this is my first month at that level of income after 6 years of uploading. It takes time and work and then it depends on what you upload.

      @boycefitzgerald 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In six years, just over 6,000 clips. I have a few friends who earn more with far fewer clips. It depends on what you have access to - what you shoot - the quality, the demand, etc.The number of clips is the least important indicator of what you will earn.

    What is the percentage of editorial clips you sell per month?

    • @boycefitzgerald
      @boycefitzgerald หลายเดือนก่อน

      This month, 18%. But it also matters what you shoot. I was in Sudan during a coup. I was in Iraq when ISIL was attacking - those clips were hot for a while. Editorial can also be just the name of a bank or something but if it is in the news…. Ivan Canabrava shoots 80% editorial and 80% of his sales are editorial. The answer to your question is not going to help you create clips that sell. Shoot interesting clips and they will sell regardless of if they are editorial or commercial. Commercial clips do have a higher overall value because they can be licensed for anything. Best of luck.

    • @boycefitzgerald
      @boycefitzgerald หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t have a Nikon but I believe they work with a 10-pin cable. So, you would need a 1 x 2.5mm Male input on one side of the cable with a Nikon 10-Pin on the other. In the US, these are available for under $10 on Amazon or at B&H.

    • @boycefitzgerald
      @boycefitzgerald หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t use the trigger. I have it but have found it better to not use it. If I go day to night, I set the slider waypoints for the duration of the time lapse. Then I set the camera settings with an intervalometer. The motion is so slow that even if I have a 15 second shutter, there is no motion blur. The slider is moving 70 centimeters in 2-3 hours. It works. You can see my find my Milky Way time lapses and see that they work. Just try it. You will see. Good luck and thanks for watching.

      This is something Zeapon has said they would do but for now at least the waypoints do ease in and out but you cannot control it and if you have more than two waypoints, it does stop at each one before moving to the next. Found you via your Zeapon review.. I haven't thought about the Stock Footage sales. I have a second shooter rig. That not only a lot longer than the Zeapon and I could mount it to a cart to make it more portable and get some Timelapse of beach footage.. Very inspirational to think I could be making some extra coin with the gear I already own.. Thank you.

    Can you use it manually as well? And can it be used in stop motion (where it stops and you restart but have a path defined)?

    • @boycefitzgerald
      @boycefitzgerald 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I works very well manually. If I understand the he stop motion correctly … you can program a path and it will move, take a picture, and move again at a rate that you define. The slider and pan-tilt system has to remain on. If you turn it off, it will not remember where it was and automatically continue that path.

    Nice video and very helpful. I have just purchased this slider from cine gearpro (uk site) and same as you, my main use for this slider is to ad some motion to my time lapse videos. But the site where I bought it said it does not come with shooter release cable. Would you happen to know what type of cable is needed for Sony a6700 and where to get it from? I bought the Zeapon Micro 3 E500. Cheers

      Hey, sorry I missed this message. I appreciate how you always respond to me about your amazing wildlife videos. I’m at work in the Middle East and missed this comment. Back to your question. In BB, you can collaborate with other creators on the platform. I make half my stock earnings doing curation. So, for 20% of any sales, I write the description and add the keywords. Another creator assigns me the a clip, I watch it, research it - whatever I need to add a title and keywords for 20% of any revenue. You can make any deals you want for the percentage, models, or however you want to collaborate. It’s between you and your partners on how to split up the sales. Make sense?

      @@boycefitzgerald thanks for the information. I hope your time in the Middle East is great! I did exactly this at my work for years while we did have new stock to work on, but that is old news there now. And I recently decided to go part time there to focus on other things. Still would be nice to make some other $$ this way. I do have a BB account just haven't put anything on it. Guess I should explore the options more. Thanks again!

      I walked slowly using a line of pavers so that I could stay straight. I used video on this one and then sped it up and stabilized. First time I have tried this way. The video doesn’t allow the dynamic range of RAW photos but it was so much easier and I like the results overall.

      @@Wesleyastonphotography - the newer GoPros (I think 9 and newer) have a hyperlapse function that works well. I’m sure you are aware. I walk with a terrible limp. When I do it with a GoPro it comes out okay but I have difficulty keeping the subject where I want it in the frame. With the Osmo pocket 3, I had it track the dome and I didn’t even have to look. Do you shoot in dlog for these shots, then all the color grading?

    • @boycefitzgerald
      @boycefitzgerald 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With the Sony A7iv, I shoot is slog-3 except in low light. For that I use PP2. For other cameras, I shoot in d-log or whatever they have that allows the most manipulation post production. Many of my friends shoot in standard profiles or maybe just reduced sharpness for stock video. Best sales seem to be to grade to rec 709. For time lapses I over saturated them and really push the colors. Otherwise, the grading should be neutral so the buyer can adjust the grading for their project. Great question!Others may feel differently. I’m telling you what works for me.

      I have never thought a lot about BB folding, to be honest. It is successful enough that it could be sold… I don’t think there would have to be a way to assign our clips back to a personal account. When I joined, what turned me off was that I couldn’t create a brand - a reputation. Then I realized that my clips are not unique enough for to create a brand and that BB’s reputation was helping me a lot more than a personal reputation would. If I had unique clips of super high quality, I would upload those in my own name or brand.

    I believe if one think that his clips are "special" it's better not opt in for subs. What do I mean by special - crafted to perfection in studio, have little to no competition in topics, very difficult to recreate, clips with groups of models etc. I opted in because I believe my clips are average, they are quality clips but they are not top niche, I don't use a lot of resources to create those right now. But, I wish there was an option for each individual clip, If I want one clip to be sold in subs I could opt in for that one clip and those clips which I think have more value could be sold individually. Thanks for your work always inspiring

    Thanks for the valuable insights. I couldn’t help but notice the use of stock footage in this video. Do you have a subscription on storyblocks or Artlist? Would you contribute to these agencies? Artlist approved my application but I’m having doubts due to the many theft stories I hear from other contributors. Thieves download clips and upload them as their own on other stock agencies.
