Japanese Whisky Review at Rack City Pool Hall & Bar
Join me for a Japanese whisky review of the Toki Suntory Whisky, Yamzaki 12-year-old Single Malt, The Chita Single Grain and Hibiki Blender's Choice. There's also a really interesting reason why this lineup is such a good match.
I love finding bars with a decent whisky selection, and all four of these Japanese whiskies are available at Rack City Pool Hall & Bar on Brisbane's south side. The owners were kind enough to invite me in to review these whiskies and play a few games of pool.

5 Core Whiskies You Should Try In 2024

Looking for a good, dependable whisky that’s readily available in 2024? In this video I share the 5 highest scoring “core range” whiskies I tried in 2023. A core range whisky is one that a whisky distillery has as a standard release, so you know it is always being made and you should be able to find in most good spirit retailers. The best part about enjoying a core range whisky is, if you like ...

The Craigduff 1973 40 year old whisky from Signatory Vintage is the oldest whisky I have ever tried, by a decade! A sample of this rare, aged whisky was sent in by a channel subscriber who wanted me to enjoy a 40 year old whisky on my 40th birthday. The whisky itself was really special, but there was also an interesting back story to how, and contentious as to where, it was made. A big thank yo...

think there was 2 casks used for this release, Cask #6 and #9 , says on label. Have tried both and found one was more 'pear drop' and one more 'honey dew' character...cant remember which was which but 🤔

Oh that's interesting. Thanks for letting me know as I thought it was just the single cask release. Looking back at my photos and this video, I had cask 9 which I think was more of the 'honey dew' from my light fruit notes. For pear drop I probably would have referred to it as 'orchard fruits'.

Minor, possibly interesting legal pedantry: “bourbon aged in X barrels” cannot be sold as just “bourbon.” It is technically in the broader “American whiskey” category, as bourbon proper must be aged exclusively in new oak. A lawyer will understand “Bourbon aged in X barrels” to mean, “this was made using bourbon as an ingredient, which was then aged in X barrels.” Of course this is all just legal pedantry, and I love my finished bourbon! But there it is.

    • @thewhiskyscribe

My communication with the company made me uneasy as they made excuse on excuse as to why that were not honouring my contract. To me bourbon is completely a different drink from whisky or whiskey. Bourbon has a sickly taste that scoch or irish doesnt have, the lack of 3 years distillaton and the corn elenent must be the reason. Bourbon reminds me of cheap Thai Hong Tong crap.

    • @thewhiskyscribe
      @thewhiskyscribe 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

With cheaper bourbons I feel the same way, but when they start getting into higher age statements there can be some interesting complexity and flavours from the corn that you just can’t get from other grains. We all have our personal preferences though. There are Irish whiskeys that contain corn, just not usually as much as 50%

That's actually NOT the same whiskey. The Bushmills 10 Yr old in the classic style bottling that is orange/red is the SHERRY CASK version (travel Exclusive), and not to be confused with the classic bottle of Bushmills 10 Yr which has GREEN Labelling and a GREEN Bottle that was matured in a combo of Bourbon/Sherry casks bottled at 40% ABV. The Newer styled bottle is the same juice just as the classic green bottle. Orange/Red travel exclusive is 1 liter bottle and bottled at 46% ABV and was finished in Oloroso Sherry casks.

Im Australian. Australian whiskies are meh, and way over priced IMHO. Never seen a bottling I'd consider integrity level. I prefer to fly to Japan and try whiskies not from Suntory or Nikka. Glad I dropped by but this channel isn't for me.

We all have different tastes. I know some Australian whiskies were a bit young (or meh) when the industry first started, and our taxation doesn’t really allow for craft distilleries to be competitive on pricing, but they’ve come a long way over the years. Stick to Japanese whiskies if that’s what you prefer, but if you ever get curious about Aussie whisky again, I would recommend trying either a Morris or Cape Byron single malt. The quality is on par with Scottish whiskies and the prices aren’t as inflated as these distilleries are producing a bit more volume.

I had a Tanist from Chief's Son Distillery the other day and loved it. Price is the main thing holding me back from buying more AU whisky, but the flavour is definitely there.

@@FirstPhilWhisky The price is an ongoing battle our industry is having with the Australian government. We’ll keep fighting for a level playing field.

@@thewhiskyscribe I should add that Japan is the best place to find Springbank expressions too. I stayed at a hostel recently that had Springbank 15 and Hazelburn 10 at the bar. Same place I tried Kanosuke and some single cask Ichiro’s. Definitely worth a trip once or twice a year now that I know where the great whisky outlets and bars are located.

@@thewhiskyscribe Definitely. I just looked up Morris and Cape Byron here in NZ and the prices are actually not bad! Especially when you compare it to other new distilleries like Isle of Harris which is asking much more! I will add both to the shopping list.

An enviable list. Cheers! (BTW: I was gifted that same EH Taylor on your shelf this Christmas, but I haven't opened it yet. Look forward to seeing what you think ...)

Thanks mate. I haven’t opened it either yet, but am planning to do a review in the next few weeks. Looking to explore more American whiskey in general this year
