  • Join me for a story of lies, fraud and corruption that saw one of the most promising Australian whisky distilleries fold and take several others down with it.
    This is easily one of the most disappointing chapters in Australian whisky.

    I was not familiar with this story, which you've presented really well in this video. Great job.

    Dude this was a legit episode on one of those provocatively named Netflix shows. Everything from editing, to your tone to the music in the background and the finishing remarks was fantastic! Great story Nath, really enjoyed it but such a shame what a few bad eggs done to a growing industry and the public's perception of whisky brands. Cheers Nath 🥃

      Thanks so much mate. With how many people were impacted by this, it was so important to me to get it right. Really appreciate that feedback.

    I very nearly fell into this trap. I purchased 6 barrels, about 80k worth in the months before it came to light that it was a fraud.
    My communication with the company made me uneasy as they made excuse on excuse as to why that were not honouring my contract.
    I had my credit card company get a refund and days later it all fell apart…
    I feel for this that did loose out and thanks for making the video to let the world know what went on!

    Many thanks. I know the story, but you really describe it well. And yes, Nant single malt itself is good, despite all the shenanigans. Here is SA, we saw the Rochfort Distillery come to grief. Different issues, but this kind of stuff is not what Aussie whisky needs.

    Good summary of a very complicated and messy incident. It’s hard to know whether the distillery was intended to be a Ponzi scheme from the outset or if it was a series of bad events that quickly cascaded into a disaster. Either way, Batt was 100% culpable. Sadly, as you pointed out, the whisky that Nant made in the early days was good and the whisky that has been made since by the new owners is fine, but it’s reputation is forever blackened. The one bright light in all this murk was Peter Bignell from Belgrove distillery, who managed to purchase some disputed barrels of Nant whisky and release it under the name Remnant. I understand that this initiative provided some repayment to those caught up in the scam, but I don’t know the details.

      Thanks mate, I am keen to get my hands on one of the Remnant releases. Would be a good way to enjoy good whisky and feel like you’re helping some of those who got scammed at the same time.

      You can buy direct from Peter at his online store and he has a Remnant bottling available at the moment, but it’s not one I’ve tasted. I bought the “The Scoundrel” expression and it was good but not amazing. The current one is “Herd Not Seen” but I know nothing about it. Each Remnant release is a blend of different casks from Nant that apparently differ greatly in character and quality, so it is highly batch variable.

    Now we have Remnant, always wonder if any of the barrels they have where from the investors that got ripped.

    I remember when this scam unfolded. They were offering somw whiskey tasting tours to investors abroad to come visit their distillery and explore the area. Looked really nice but I'm sure the main point was to try to get people to purchase a barrel. Glad we didn't go there. Tried a few of the Nant whiskies though and they were quite good.

    • @thewhiskyscribe
      @thewhiskyscribe  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would have been great if they did everything properly and only sold they amount of barrels they could fill.

      @@thewhiskyscribeSo short-sighted. If they were just honest they woulda made & continued to make, tonsa cash & been right up there with Lark & Hellyer’s as Australian Icons. Beggars Belief. Guess that shonk was offsetting his construction industry losses with his one GOOD investment. Happens a bit.
