Thanks mate. I tried both at the distillery and was on the fence as to which of the two I wanted. They were both great and I wouldn’t have been bothered either way, I just favoured the 001 on that day.
Sounds like it's been a good year! Any Auchentoshan 18 from SMWS blew my socks off, I can name a few off the top of my head and I actually did a side by side of 3 different Auchentoshan 18s at the Vaults in Leith and couldn't believe all being ex-bourbon all tasting different yet beautiful! I think you're a natural storyteller Nath so I'd love to see more historical events or cool stories behind distilleries/whiskies etc. Cheers my friend, here's to a great 2024!
Thanks mate. I did want to do a few more whisky history videos. Just about every distillery has got an interesting backstory so it shouldn’t be too hard to find topics.
They sound tasty, though I'd be interested to hear your top official bottlings. Especially when it comes to Australian whiskies, I'm very hesitant to shell out the high price when the specs can be iffy. I've enjoyed your coverage of local whiskies and some insight into the goings-on around the industry. Morris Tokay is still high on my list to try.
That’s a great idea thanks. I’ll do a follow up video soon if my highest rated whiskies that are from distillery’s current core ranges. Independent bottlings can be great, but you’re right, they’re often expensive and/or sold out by the time there are enough good reviews to decide on buying them.
Awesome list Nath! Ive always been chased off and a little gun shy on LMDW bottlings. Im sure they are great quality, but the prices are a bit much in my area. 10 year old Benrinnes for $450 AUD. One day I'll take a shot though as they typically sound fantastic and this Edradour sounds unreal. Cheers man 🥃
Thanks mate. Those LMDW prices are a bit of a barrier and I’ve only ever tried their releases in tastings, never bit the bullet and bought one myself. That said, I can’t recall ever having a bad one.
An enviable list. Cheers! (BTW: I was gifted that same EH Taylor on your shelf this Christmas, but I haven't opened it yet. Look forward to seeing what you think ...)
Thanks mate. I haven’t opened it either yet, but am planning to do a review in the next few weeks. Looking to explore more American whiskey in general this year
Nice list but very expensive Bening from Canada exploring whiskeys from your area interest me a lot. Otherwise I will have my dram listening your comments on whiskey that I can’t afford. Salutations from Canada!
There are some interesting whiskies being made here. Quite a few are increasing production in order to export more. You might start seeing a few Aussie brands like Starward, Morris, Archie Rose and Cape Byron on your shelves in the next couple of years. Otherwise, a whisky tour of Australia would be a fun holiday 😁🥃
Im Australian. Australian whiskies are meh, and way over priced IMHO. Never seen a bottling I'd consider integrity level. I prefer to fly to Japan and try whiskies not from Suntory or Nikka. Glad I dropped by but this channel isn't for me.
We all have different tastes. I know some Australian whiskies were a bit young (or meh) when the industry first started, and our taxation doesn’t really allow for craft distilleries to be competitive on pricing, but they’ve come a long way over the years. Stick to Japanese whiskies if that’s what you prefer, but if you ever get curious about Aussie whisky again, I would recommend trying either a Morris or Cape Byron single malt. The quality is on par with Scottish whiskies and the prices aren’t as inflated as these distilleries are producing a bit more volume.
I had a Tanist from Chief's Son Distillery the other day and loved it. Price is the main thing holding me back from buying more AU whisky, but the flavour is definitely there.
@@thewhiskyscribe I should add that Japan is the best place to find Springbank expressions too. I stayed at a hostel recently that had Springbank 15 and Hazelburn 10 at the bar. Same place I tried Kanosuke and some single cask Ichiro’s. Definitely worth a trip once or twice a year now that I know where the great whisky outlets and bars are located.
@@thewhiskyscribe Definitely. I just looked up Morris and Cape Byron here in NZ and the prices are actually not bad! Especially when you compare it to other new distilleries like Isle of Harris which is asking much more! I will add both to the shopping list.
Great video mate! I have The Dieman's Rising Highwayman & AOB 002. Definitely a bit of a vibe 😁

@@thewhiskyscribe Yeah that's fair - will need to try 001 one day, just no bars near me stocking it haha.

@@FirstPhilWhisky The price is an ongoing battle our industry is having with the Australian government. We’ll keep fighting for a level playing field.
