That thumbnail was great! Man, what a cool story. Definitely a whisky memory in the making. Great vid sir, thanks for that.

Brilliant piece of history you got in your glass and memory Nath! I generally find the older whiskies a bit underwhelming because of course you have to think about the price. I had a 30 year old Talisker, it was alright. Same as a 30 year old Ardmore. I have had Canadian Club 43, Royal Salute 38, 40 year old Girvan and a few 30 year old Cameronbridges and in my opinion with my limited database blended whiskies and single grains take to age much better. Like you've explained in detail the cask selection, location and many other things need to all align and I find the malt whiskies are tougher customers than grains for this process. Cheers Nath great video!

Thanks mate, sounds like you’ve had some great opportunities to try those older age statements. I’m always happy to try them for the sake of history, but south of 18 is definitely a better return of flavour for your spend.

Not the countries I would have expected to be third or fourth in 30 year old whisky releases 😯

Looks very young in the glass

It's actually the same colour as a homemade whisky I aged for just 3 months. Definitely more balanced though.

think there was 2 casks used for this release, Cask #6 and #9 , says on label. Have tried both and found one was more 'pear drop' and one more 'honey dew' character...cant remember which was which but 🤔

Oh that's interesting. Thanks for letting me know as I thought it was just the single cask release. Looking back at my photos and this video, I had cask 9 which I think was more of the 'honey dew' from my light fruit notes. For pear drop I probably would have referred to it as 'orchard fruits'.

Will you be drinking a 40-year-old whisky to celebrate that birthday? (Or you could get a younger whisky distilled that year, as I did with the 1961 Highland Park The Dragon, which was only a 36-year-old on my 54th birthday.)
The oldest whisky I've tasted (so far...) was the 62-year-old Glen Grant 1956 Mr George Centenary Edition from Gordon & MacPhail - Dornoch Castle Hotel had it as a 'break even' dram (£150 for 25ml from a £5000 MSRP bottle!) during the 2019 Dornoch Whisky Festival and it was definitely one of the best whiskies I am ever likely to taste!
I've been lucky enough (though my bank manager wouldn't think so!) to try Hibiki 30 on a couple of occasions and that is probably the best Japanese whisky I've encountered (I've only got the 1989 17-year-old Hibiki and a couple of 18-year-olds from Fuji-Gotemba and Hanyu as the oldest purely Japanese bottles here; not sure if That Boutique-y Whisky Company's 21-year-old Japanese Blended counts...).
Oh, and I do have a New Zealand Whisky Company 1990-2012 from Willowbank and a Lammerlaw 12 that I think was from the same distillery.

I would love to try a 40 year old whisky if I get the opportunity, but unless I get a very generous gift for my birthday it might be out of my price range. My best bet would be doing two 20 year old whiskies side by side.
I actually have a whisky in mind for my 40th. It’s something from a closed down distillery I’ve been saving on my shelf for a few years. I figured if not my 40th, when else would I open it? That video should be up in a few weeks.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It looks like you have been able to try some sensationally rare whiskies. I’m planning on a trip to Japan in the next few years to properly explore their distilleries. The price of Japanese whisky in Australia is so inflated, a trip to japan would be more economical.
And you’re right, the Lammerlaw 12 is also from Willowbank distillery.

@@thewhiskyscribeI'd offer to send you some 40-year-old whisky (I've got 3), but I think the postage would cost too much (and take a very long time, if ever successfully delivered).

@@andrewbutler7681 If you’re offering a sample of 40yo whisky, I’d be very appreciative and more than happy to pay the postage. 🥃
