Junk Journal July in Watercolor
Today I'm sharing my start into Junk Journal July hosted by @megjournals . The difference is that I am working in the very interesting sketchbook called the Onion Skin Journal. It is made of onion skin paper and the effects of pen and ink and watercolor is just so incredibly intriguing to me. The challenge prompts are inspired by the vintage ephemera I collect which is how the "junk journal" comes into play. Join me inside my new sketchbook just for this experimental process and let's see what it can do. It is a great example of the Art of Practice.

Most of these colours can be made by mixing ordinary watercolours, saving considerable expense. Also, too many of these watercolours are heavily opaque. Not everyone subscribes to the fad for granulation! Also, I require assurances as to their lightfastness.

Lol, thats not so much cheating as learning. 😊 Speaking of pencils... I'm doing a Tangle Challenge and my new favorite "cheating" tip is to go over the pencil after its blended with the faintest watercolor wash. I use whatever left over puddles I have on my palette... even something that's barely a water stain with a little pigment will work to set the pencil and bonus points, it removes the shine. ❤😊. I find the very subtle tints are preferable on these. Wonderful video, I love watching you mix!❤

@kellyhoernig Exactly! I have a huge book of mixed media paper just for that. I use it like a splash diary for 'paint alongs', challenges, interesting color combinations, how to's and what ifs. I keep a simple swatch of my different paint sets in the back for quick reference. I have a half size notebook for pen and ink. The paper is the worst for watercolor, but it will take a faint wash to set the pencil shading. I use a 4 x 6 for zentangle patterns. I use the left side for the step out and have room for notes and credits in the margins. I use my good paper and books for my 'original' work. 💓 I really want to start a leaf and matching color diary like the one you do! That looks exciting, but I don't feel like I'm set up yet for it.

Potter's pink, slate blue and fern are so pretty! The minty green and grey green too and qlao the second one which you mentioned to be mix of pink and buff titanium, probably correct! Thank you for the video😊

Yay! First comment. It's 2.54am (I'm in Australia), can't sleep, so I decided to see what's on TH-cam. A brand new video from Kelly! 🥳 Loved this palette so much, but it must be sold out because it's not on their website 😞 Thank you Kelly, can't wait to see what you paint with these yummy colours.

I knew you would be up LOL Ocean Paper upload palettes at different times throughout the year. If you are interested in them, I would suggest getting on their newsletter list. Thanks for watching and I'm excited to create with them!

Great lesson on edges but also it helped me understand for the first time that I am really creating shadows of the area that is touched under the object, not shadowing the object touching. Duh!

That is a great awakening Patti. Now that you understand that it is a game changer for your shadows.

If it doesn't make you smile, why create around it? That's why I always try to paint something I enjoy.
