- Today I'm sharing Sarah Renae Clark's Color Cube no. 324 color palette for a brand new sketchbook. This is a great color mixing project to get you out of your comfort zone and into new color combinations. Join me for the third color mixing palette inside my new sketchbook as we paint a seashell as part of the experimental process. It is a great example of the Art of Practice.

Love how you showed the different ways to mix color - starting with different base colors in order to achieve your end result!
There are always so many different ways to mix color and sometimes I think we forget that. Thanks for watching!
Your colour matching is rather accurate!! And I really like your technique for painting the seashell, especially how you used the brush to lift highlights and how you always kept an eye out for the shadows. Thanks!
You are very welcome and yes, I was trying to keep the values clear from the start, just making it easier to paint for myself.
Exquisite, Kelly. Your unique appreciation of colour and texture is SO inspiring. It has 'gentled' my own approach. And I am enjoying my art so much more. Thank you.
Wow, what a fantastic compliment, thank you! I'm glad my joy has inspired more joy in your creating art!
Lovely, gentle and pleasing combination.
Thank you so much Melody!
What a stunning palette ☺☺
It really is a pretty one, isn't it? Thanks!
The shell is beautiful. The cube looks like it would be a great help but space is tight where I paint. I like having a dedicated space for painting.😊
Thank you for watching!
Stunning l love your work, always such charming, gentle pieces. 😊
Ahh, thank you so much for your kind comments!
Kelly, this is stunning. I love your choice of colours and seeing the process of mixing them. The result is subtle and actually brings out the beauty of the shell in a way that a more literal approach (such as you described at the end) would not have done. I am currently doing a year-long online drawing course and one of the most important things I have learnt is to look at things as they are, and not as I think they are! Since I started following you I have become a flicking addict - just one more thing to feed my texture addiction lol! I said to my hubby last night that since recently getting into watercolours, I am not a great fan of super-smooth washes (although they look beautiful) but love anything that will add texture. I love cauliflower back runs, spattering, salt, granulation, and now flicking!! I've just bought some Kuretake Graphite watercolours which are super-cool and make absolutely stunning textures! (There is NO rehab for this texture junkie, I'm afraid...)
I totally agree, I love any kind of texture, it is where I find delightful joy for sure. Glad we are splashing together in this watercolor journey!
My favorite. Thank you Kelly ❤
You are very welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
I’m in awe. I love your shell, so beautifully painted. Arches is my favorite paper. I’ll have to take another look at this Etsy shop. First time I looked, none with Arches.
If you don't find one, she will make a custom one for you with Arches. They are handmade so might take a couple weeks but they are well worth the wait. Thanks Teresa!
This is stunning!! I have those cubes but have yet to use them. Thank you for the inspiration.
Pull those color cubes out and just pull one randomly to start painting from. It is such a fun, beautiful exercise and you already have them so use them!
Love It!
Thanks so much for watching!
oooh that's really nice work. You made that shell come alive. I've been having a dilemma with myself on whether or not I should buy a color cube.
They are really great quality and the variety of cards is so lovely. However, if you aren't sure, make a couple of your own and see how you like using them.
LOL! I am 2nd! 😂
Kelly, thank you for showing how to use the color cube cards for individual paintings.
I don't know if you mentioned the color cube card number, but it would be helpful for those of us who have them. Thanks.
You are welcome, I enjoy the color mixing leading to a project that coordinates. It is a fun way to study and practice painting and mixing!
I mentioned it in the video and in the video description box, it's no. 324
Yes you did. I should have waited til the end of the video. Thank you.
@@maureencepiel959 no problem, enjoy color mixing this lovely palette!
I just found your channel! I love this color palette and your shell! You’ve inspired me to finally get a Color Cube! 🌈
Yeah, you are going to have a great time being inspired by these little creative beauties. Thanks for watching and welcome to In the Studio!
It’s fabulous Kelly
Thank you so much Laurie!
Love this!
Thank you so much and hope it inspires you to mix some color!
Wow. Those color cubes are so tempting... last time I checked the price has dropped and they're almost affordable! I'm just worried that I wouldn't know what to paint with the color combinations. That shell was brilliant. Da Vinci is having a sale on their watercolors right now (...it ends Sunday!). You have definitely been an influence on my color choices. ❤
When looking at the color, I ask myself "what does these remind me of?" With that simple question your mind is off and running. Flowers, fruits and vegetables, anything still life, nature, beach - it's all game when creating, just follow your instincts. Welcome to being a "weird" color lover too LOL
@kellyhoernig Well... Your mind does! Mine still needs some training. Fortunately, you've given me a good roadmap on 'how to'. I'm placing an order with DaVinci in trying to figure out why I need 'perylene maroon'. Do you have any suggestions?
@@windywednesday4166 I am using Daniel Smith's Perylene Maroon on my Studio Palette and it is a red I reach for almost daily. It will add a nice deep richness to any color mix you can think of.
@kellyhoernig Oh, right. I'm looking at Dr Oto's showdown. Daniel Smith seems earthier, but I think I'll be happy with da Vinci for now. Thank you for the tips. 😊

Thank you for the stars!
First? Woohoo!! I AM first 😂.
So funny and glad you made it as the first comment today!
No links though...?
There are links for everything (video references, supplies, color cube) in the video description box so I'm confused by your comment.
@@kellyhoernigthanks for some reason I can’t see them on my laptop but did find them on my phone
@@CastleMc I'm so happy to hear that, thank you for letting me know.
