  • Today I'm sharing my updated 18 watercolor studio palette and the rich, bold, decadent colors it will make. Creating a color mixing chart out of your palette, I believe is the most powerful tool and artist can have. Each one is unique and the value in understanding exactly what your palette colors will do for you is incredibly important. I'm showing you how to get the most from your mixing chart and the way to achieve it quickly. Hope you enjoy the artistic journey!

      I do create a color chart a little differently than most but it creates a more well rounded version of your palette when you create it this way and I'm thrilled you loved it so, thank you!

    Beautiful colors in your palette. Thank you so much for explaining the mixing so clearly along with the demonstration. I get it it finally. Need to go and practice this. Even the chart looks frame worthy!!!!

      I agree, I could easily and happily frame the charts for my studio walls. Glad this helped explain it where you got it YEAH! Have a great time creating one of your own.

    Thank you so much. I helped myself when you were mixing by remembering that the first color mentioned is the one that will have the stronger value.

    Thanks so much for this video Kelly! I'm new to watercolor and I think this is just beautiful. I had an 'ah-ha' moment... I would see color mixing charts and wondered what the point was because how would I know what the exact 'recipe' was if I wanted to use that mix? But, now I see that it's not that you're looking to recreate a color necessarily, it's more of a depiction of what is POSSIBLE to achieve with those 2 colors. And knowing that you're try ing make the color lean toward the colors in the vertical column helps figure out how to get that mix again. Ah-ha!! Love the colors you selected too. I'm drawn to the same color palette.

    I have a question, but I'm not sure how to word it right. Once you do the row across, can't you use the same paint you just used to do the matching row down, just tinting it a bit darker to save paint and time, or is there a reason not to do it that way? Genuine not snarky question. Love these charts, very useful and IMO frameable art in themselves! Thanks for sharing, 🌻

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can do that if you want, I just prefer creating in a single row to keep it in my mind the star color. I don't like searching for the other squares of the same color mixes, especially on a huge chart like mine, it literally just wastes time in my opinion. Thanks for the question.

    May I know why you splatter water on the swatches? Is it more advantageous for us to do it? Thank you,

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I really just like the texture it adds but it also allows me to see the lighter color tones in such a tight swatch. Some people do a mass tone and a watered down tone, this just gets it done in one step for me.

    Why do you do the splashing?

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thanks for asking. I love the texture splashing adds, if I wanted it perfectly flat, I would go back to painting in acrylics. It also lets me see the layers of the colors and the values I can achieve pretty quickly.

      This made me laugh because I did not know. Joyce is artist Joyce Hicks and it's called Mother Green because she starts with it and works others colors into it.
