  • Today I'm showing you an easy way to drawing and it all starts with simple shapes - the circle, square, triangle and rectangle. If you can do those shapes, I can show you how to draw anything. Teaching yourself to see shapes first instead of details is what this exercise is all about.

I have been told- draw the shapes! But you explained it in simple and practical terms! Thank you!

You are very welcome! Learning to see it the best thing you can do as an artist and it breaks everything down into the simplest shapes for drawing.

This is a wonderful way to draw. I began drawing years ago, and started putting more thought into the basic shape approach after joining some of your classes. I love that your classes encourage us to use our own things and not just copy exactly what you are creating. It makes it so personal and helps us build our own style. I can sit for hours and watch your draw and create - usually while I am doing something here on my own. I ALWAYS learn new things or gain a different insight by watching you. I am certainly happy that we have the internet to share our ideas and techniques. Thank you, Kelly!

Thank you so much Sheila, glad I can still make you ponder and learn a few tricks too all in the name of art!

Thank you for this! You are like magic! I never learned to draw. I’ve always relied on painting patterns, but you broke it down so easily that I’m not intimidated anymore. I can do this-thanks to you! If you had an online drawing course, I would take it for sure! I’m going to start looking for shapes and practicing!✏️

YEAH! Love that you see the ease drawing can be and that is everything. Removing fear from the word DRAW is wonderful. Have fun drawing everything now that you see it is all about basic shapes.

Kelly, thanks for this instruction. I’ve never been able to draw anything, and when I saw your cute little designs in your sketchbooks I thought “how cute!” but knew I couldn’t draw like that. Well- now I think I can!

This was wonderful Kelly. The way you showed the shape concept was helpful and really simplified for me, how to see. I actually think I could do this.
You spoke of the oval while drawing but not as one of the initial shapes. Would you add it to the four initial shapes, or put it in the circle shape category?
    Thanks so much. 👏🏼👍🏼💕👩🏻‍🎨

I look at the oval as a circle shape, just elongated. Glad it was helpful and encourages you to give it a try!
