Kelly, this was lovely, so very lovely - all of your thoughts, as well as your art. I think the "softness" was always there just ready to emerge. The reason I think that, is because that is one of the aspects of your art that I have loved from the very first time I saw your videos. Everything about it spoke to me of softness and calmness. The straight lines never seemed "hard" to me because your colors, technique and subject matter were always of lovely, delicate things. Your concertina journal is amazing!! Thank you for sharing it and your journey.
Oh Diane, thank you so much for your beautiful, kind comments! You are very welcome and hope it inspires you to try a concertina sketchbook, they are amazing!
I think I am slowly grasping your style, it is so wonderful and all your own. I have never seen it before but it is breathtaking and brings a tear to my eyes every time i watch your videos. Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift.
Ohhh Carolin, you are too sweet and I appreciate your kind words so much. A lot of time, energy and practice went into developing my watercolor style so thank you for noticing!
Thank you so much for your kind comments! I have to say, at the moment I am working in 3 concertina sketchbooks and I am loving including design, color, composition and storytelling along the way.
This is fascinating. As someone who can’t draw a straight line to save my life (literally 😩not even with the assist of a ruler 😩😩😩😞)I want to explore similar in my own work now. Thank you.
I'm so glad you found this inspiring! I just released a drawing video a couple weeks ago, you might find it helpful in the way I break down the shapes.
What an organic, therapeutic way to express your true self. I can see how tight your straight lines are lessoning and allowing the natural you to come through. Nature can teach us so much such as a winding river, it makes it way gently around obstacles . So happy for you and this shows how much you are letting yourself BE your true self. I can see this as a book Kelly! ❤ Very inspiring......
I feel art is the most personal expression one has. After all, we are all unique and it comes through in everything we do. If I asked 50 people to paint a rose, each of us would create it differently and that is what I am trying to share. The personality of oneself is beautiful and unique to only you so celebrate it!
You are very welcome and glad we are kindred spirits! Didn't really think about the archetypes within us but will carry that thought around with me for a while, thank you for that Heidi!
Kelly I LOVE alllllllllll of your work I have seen on your channel - the straight lines and the curves and circles ❤️ I also really appreciate the time you take to share your design thoughts and processes -- I find it so helpful and inspirational. Thank you! :)) I am taking your BIG journal class and just completed my February page - I would like to take your Concertina class in the future..... maybe in the fall 🍂
Thank you for your comments and taking one of my classes, I really appreciate the support! Design & composition is one of my most favorite things to do so I'm glad you find it helpful for your artistic journey!
You are very welcome! I think it is a beautiful gift to share when something so special happens and impacts art and life. Hope it encourages you to dig inside!
Sorry you are hurt and I'm wishing you a speedy recovery! Thank you for spending time with me In the Studio. There are a lot of playlists on my channel if you are looking for something specific, enjoy.
A lovely evolution for you to go through. The album is going to be so beautiful, well it already is of course. Thank you for sharing your vulnerability through your art.
That is absolutely beautiful! The thing is, you have the skill to see how to integrate what you feel through art. And you have the skill to synthesize your work. I see it in all your sketchbooks. The beauty stands out because of its cohesiveness. How I long to be able to produce beautiful art like yours; yet I know behind it stands many years of hard work. Thank you for sharing the lovely things you create.
Angie, you have to start somewhere and that act alone in being consistent in your sketchbook will allow you to see your progress from start to finish. You've got this! The hard part is the commitment to do it as often as you can with intention.
Hello Kelly I want to thank you so much for sharing your beautiful artwork and all of your thought processes as you progressed I am so happy that I came across you at 3:30 this morning I don't sleep much it was very relaxing and I love your limited color palette can't wait to see more of what you do I'm a person who loves feminine and softness and I'm terribly afraid of architectural art and urban sketching so it made me laugh to think how different I am from you I love being able to share with other women and grow together❤
You are very welcome, process and progress are two of my favorite things because they mean I am creating! I love that we are totally different yet come together to create, what a beautiful world!
Wow thank you for sharing. I look forward to see where your journey ends. Perhaps ending with bright spring colored blooms on your last page and an open heart! Therapy in a paintbrush.
Enjoyed watching how this progressed as you allowed yourself to create what you felt instead of fighting it! Beautiful pages !! I’m still working on getting my mojo back....little by little it’s happening because of videos like this! Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Thank you so much Sandra and be gentle with yourself on easing back into creating. Little moments, clearing your art table, reorganizing supplies, swatching colors - it is all part of creating, just enjoy it!
I received my copy of the Flower Hunter and I was stopped in my tracks at the opening pages. The flowers reminds me of old wallpaper in a house I grew up in. Thanks for exposure to Lucys work and I have enjoyed your channel for only three weeks now! Now to watch your video lol.
It is such a transformative book and one that set me on this journey because I had never been connected to a book so beautiful before. It spoke to me and I listened intently. Enjoy her work and listen to the whispers you hear, you don't know where they will lead you!
Fantastic! I enjoyed hearing about your transformation and the emotions it brought to you. I’ve been thinking about your video all day. It’s really resonating with me.
You have become my favorite go-to-@Artist each morning. I am a mathematician and have fallen in love with your softness and gentleness of color. Thanks for such inspiration.
What a beautiful story, Kelly ❤ I can see the transformation in your gorgeous work. Thank you for all the beauty you share; your videos are such an inspiration! I wish you the best and can't wait to see more of your beautiful work and journey.
@@kellyhoernig It for sure did! I have ordered my first Concertina Sketchbook; I find the layout very inspiring. I can't wait to start my journey inspired by your work, nature, and the small, beautiful things life gives. Have a lovely day, Kelly 🌿🌿
Good morning, Kelly. I always love to hear your thoughts and insights regarding your artwork. I also think we are constantly changing and our artwork reflects that. I think we may begin to get 'artists block' when we are doing too much of what we are 'expected' to do. I see some artists (decorative painters) and I can spot their work immediately. They have a style that they have been showing themselves in for many years - sometimes decades. I have always been a 'rebel' in many aspects of my life. I think that has carried over to my artwork. I have tried and found moderate success creating using many mediums, subjects, and styles. But I haven't felt as if I were 'settled' yet. Is that good or bad? I am still trying to figure it out. I don't want to be a cookie cutter of my teachers. I would rather be an eclectic mix of ALL the teachers that I have encountered in my life. I like to watch, process, and try to replicate them, but then do my own thing. It isn't always immediate or easy. But I am not happy just replicating what I have been shown. My soul needs more. So far, I know I am partial to darker artwork, with lots of contrast. (How different is that from you!?!) My 'darkest' work is what makes me happiest - most of the time. But that doesn't mean I don't do other things too that feed my artistic self. I look at it like a fog slowly lifting. I am in some type of 'transition' now professionally. It is undefined, but I feel it. I may not be my most productive self through this metamorphasis, but it will come. I will be patient. Thank you for sharing your story with us all. It is so inspiring.
Sheila, I love that you are in a constant flux of creative endeavors. I have been through a gambit myself but through each one it is the discovery and execution of the art that always intrigues me. I have always marched to my own drum and get bored extremely easily so I am constantly evolving, reaching, learning and developing. I wouldn't be me if I didn't. It all takes time but if you look back at your art journey, you will see the transformations along the way, I promise!
Beautiful and heart touching! Thank you so much for sharing this! I really love your art!!! The funny thing is I'm almost always using circles...makes me think 😊...
Sorry I was interrupted and hit submit too soon. Want to add that your discussion on curved lines, circles, emotions, etc has completely opened up a new area to learn about in my beginning steps in art. I just turned 70 and only started trying to learn watercolor last year. I probably don't have time to reach close to your understanding of shapes and colors but I really enjoy having you open up this new area of the art world. Thank you, Sandy
Sandy, I just did a drawing video you might like, check my channel for it. I think anytime and at any age, learning to be open and expressive is a beautiful, personal thing!
What a lovely journey and great video. For some odd reason I kind of teared up a bit near the end, although I’m not sure why exactly tbh. Maybe some things going on in my life right now. I’ll have to take a look at that book as well! ❤
Diana, thank you so much and I am thrilled that the story touched you so! Connect to those emotions and let them out in your art, it will be so powerful, I promise!
I use a lot of them from Cheap Joe's American Journey watercolor line. They are pastel in color and mix fantastically with everything creating the most dreamy colors ever. You can find them on my 24 color palette on my TH-cam channel.
Man I love your videos. So much beauty. Very much enjoy what you share and the thought process behind your work. You make me look at things differently that I have not noticed before. I watercolor also but you show such a delicateness to the medium. I was trained in traditional landscape and your work explores just what I was looking for but didnt know. Guess we all keep discovering ourselves.
Thank you so much for your very kind comments! Art is such an adventure and I love that it keeps challenging us all to grow and reach and search for what is next in our journey. Glad to know I'm not alone in the transformation of being an artist!
Elaine, I have a Teachable site where I paint everything, check my video description box. To see paintings on TH-cam check the Swatch & Create, 100 Days playlists.
Hi Kelly, I really enjoyed your process explanation. It encouraged me to think of other ways to connect with nature in my art sketchbook. The concertina book looks delightful. I have so many sketchbooks stored for later use that I’ve run out of storage. The concertina will have to wait for me🥹
This principle works the same in any sketchbook. Nature is an overall theme and a connective point, what you choose to mix nature with is where your unique personality comes in and makes it a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Pull one of those sketchbooks out and get playing, it will change the way you look at putting paint to paper, promise!

You are very welcome. Being open is a new experience but I do love the share and hope it brings light to a piece of your artistic journey!
Thanks, Kelly, for opening us and showing your tender side thru your art.
It was a bit of a shocker but it happened and I embraced it, finally! You always believed I had it in me, thank you for that sweet friend!
So beautiful, in so many ways. Thank you!
I'm glad it connected to you in multiple ways, thank you for sharing that with me!
