Ride With Roy (and Wendy)
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 ธ.ค. 2019
With so many channels devoted to featherlight speed machines, ridden by super fit athletes, Ride with Roy provides a safe haven where you will be welcome whatever you ride. I am mostly joined by my best cycling buddy, Wendy, who loves to sing, but there's no chance of a copyright strike and most songs are unrecognisable and she only knows the first verse. We have added e-assist bikes to our stable, which also includes my favourite Tempest Titanium Gravel Bike and Wendy's Liv Devote Gravel spec. We often breakaway from our planned route and disappear down an inviting looking track in search of something interesting, but most of all we have fun! I am always seeking new and innovative cycling products but will only review selected products after testing over many miles. We always reply to questions, so feel free to engage with uws. Also, if there is a subject you would like covered then please ask. If you prefer to contact me offline, my email is ridingwithroy@gmail.com
Embrace Winter! My top tips to keep you cycling through winter
Here are my top tips for cycling through winter that will keep up your performance and keep you cycling fit. Some of you take to Zwift or Rouvy while others, us included, like to stay outdoors. In today's ride we wrap up warm and take a group of leisure cyclists to an historic Templar Preceptory, including blind cyclist, Charles who loves getting outdoors.

I am Roy, born in 1952, Living in Lincolnshire UK (the hilly part!) and enjoying cycling more each day. In need of a double knee replacement, I still manage to knock out 150 mile rides - but at a relaxed pace! With so many TH-cam channels devoted to loud, fast talking, testosterone fuelled, cycling heroes, I thought you might enjoy joining us on some of our more relaxed adventures. I say us because I am usually joined by my best cycling buddy, Wendy. Much younger than me (she makes clear), and very petite, Wendy can achieve 100 mile + rides with no trouble. We are slow mainly because we enjoy smelling the roses and stopping to seek out historical sights. This is made much easier as we both ride graves bikes - Wendy a Liv Devote and me a Planet X Tempest Titanium. We often stray from the planned route to dive off down an inviting looking track. I usually add details of the routes we take, on Strava, at the end of each video so you can ride them if you wish. Wendy is prone to bursting into song, although there's no chance of a copyright strike as she only ever remember the first verse and even then it's unrecognisable. We have ridden Edinburgh to Grantham, Coast to Coast on the The Way of The Roses and the Cantii Way in Kent. We sometimes also ride ebikes, mainly if we have things to carry. You will have gathered that we love a bit of banter and let you share in our humour, so please come along and Ride with Roy (and Wendy)
I am always seeking out new and innovative products and was the first to introduce the Tyre Glider. I am VERY selective about what I review and when I do agree to test something, I test it over a long period so I can give an honest opinion.
I am currently designing a long distance tourist route around Lincolnshire - The King John Way, and will launch this in May 2025. We are always pleased to hear from you in the comments, or you can email me at ridingwithroy@gmail.com

You can't beat a ride to a haunted tower on a chilly day. Complete with a ghostly whispered voice at 9:34 👻 Always enjoy your videos Roy.
@@daviddent7483 😂😂glad you spotted that
That was a really enjoyable day out; as ever, I’m grateful for Charles’s patience with me as I learn to be a better tandem pilot. Turning to winter tips, in my early days cycling I made the mistake of wearing thick socks to try and keep my feet warm; however, all that did was make the shoes too tight which constrain the blood flow and my feet were still cold. Last season though, I discovered knee length merino wool ski socks which work really well (especially when combined with an overshoe).
@@mikeainsworth4504 I think you did extremely well, although not as good as his usual 12 year old pilot 😀 Nothing worse than cold feet - except cold hands! I use the Vulcan heated socks and when it gets even colder, the Vulcan heated insoles.
I do a lot of gravel in winter, as least when I slide off on ice, nothing heavy and 4 wheeled is going to run me over 😂
@@chris1275cc dont know if you know. There are studded snow and ice tires available.
Thanks Roy and the group ! It doesn't take long to start enjoying any ride (weather related). Looks like a good day was had by all ! I think Charles is very lucky to have friends like Mike and the reat of you. As I'm sure you all likewise. I bought a set of those peddles for my winter commute last year. I found they made a lot of difference, to help reduce close passes. I will check out the Sena headsets. ( i will look to see if you have done a review). It would be handy with the wife ! Good for you, for helping to campain for the crossing...forget the silly negative comment ! He will never understanding, that it may have saved lives.....but you will !

What a lovely group of people , wear abouts are you based ? I'm on the Isle of Wight .
We are a long way from you, Kevin, based in Grantham, Lincolnshire. This part of the county has the rolling hills of the Vale of Belvior, just across the border in Leicestershire, so makes for some beautiful cycling. You live in an equally picturesque part of the world. Years ago I flew my microlight down from Newark to Sandown on the island, which was an adventure. The Let’s Ride groups tend to be like minded people who are very friendly and interested in the scenery, as opposed to head down and going as fast as possible 😀
i love the view you have the streets and just the ride looks so good.. What kind of bike do you have ?
@@newsmean for the guided rides I use a Ribble CGR electric, as this enables me to carry the extra kit needed as well as accelerate from the back of the group to handle junctions. For all other rides I use my Tempest Titanium gravel bike.
Ive got a good tip for winter cycling!. Don't!!!.😂
@@MartinWhite-i5u 😂😂 I was waiting for that comment 😀

@@rolandbrooks467 well I can’t seem to shake her off so I thought I should include her 😀

Nice ride out Roy, reminds me ! I must put my mudguards on this year and dig out the warm gloves.
@@englishcyclist I thought you’d defected to running 😀
@@RideWithRoy Best get the mud guards for that too 🤣
Roy , the problem we have as cyclists and it is all over the country, motorists actually believe that they have the right of way on the roads and too self important to any road users always in a rush to get where they are going ,ive even seen them using mobile phones while driving . In all honesty, there isn't enough police to tackle this problem and your last comment about your neighbour speaks volumes of self important drivers . Kind regards Dave S.
Agreed, and that’s why I report bad driving with video evidence. Two of my local forces are very good but Nottinghamshire fails miserably. If more of us report then the word will get around not to mess with cyclists!
@RideWithRoy i have a chilli cam on the front and shame them on fb but report to the police beforehand, and nothing comes of it. The drivers are cautioned after a telling off, but that's about as much as it gets, wiltshire police does try but more than often fails. I am doing the somerset sportive up and around chedder gorge short route in april. i normally do it for charity or a cause. I did it last year for a friend who had MND. Sadly, he passed before christmas. we served in the army, the same regiment over 22 years each.
@@davestubbsystubbs sorry to hear about your friend, Dave. MND is cruel! In most of my cases drivers get a one day £100 driving course. I think it depends on the attitude of the Chief Constable. I complained to Notts Chief Constable but he didn’t even reply. When I made an official complaint about him they suddenly became really hot on close passes. Unfortunately, they gone back to their old ways. Most forces don’t even tell us what the penalty was, although Leicestershire Police are great and give all details. Good luck with the Sportive!
Rider with poppy top-lots of pelvic rolling, could lead to priblems. Try lowering seat slightly and ask someone to observe when your pelvis stops rolling. Really liked bid. Temple Brauer def on my itinerary. Thanks
Your neighbour sounds like a lovely person =)
@@BikepackingAdventures he is actually okay in most other aspects, but instantly gets wound up when cycling is mentioned - which I do on purpose 😀
I got a second bike which takes mudguards and a rack , that way I can have small panniers and take extra kit or stow layers I have taken off . I'm lucky in that being retired , I can pick my days , I think that there is no need to stop riding or use indoor kit , just accept that rides may be fewer and shorter .
What tips can you add help with cycling all through winter and where do you draw the line?
Nothing to disagree with there. It's always nice to have a destination and build in a coffee break. The day I fitted mudguards was a real turning point to winter rides. Still don't like the cold or rain much but at least my rear end stays dry.
@ yes, my mudguards go on in October. The only thing worse than riding with no mudguards is riding behind someone with no mudguards.
Almost in total agreement Roy, although as someone who nearly always rides solo, I motivate myself with the thought of being as miserable as the weather outside if I don't get my cycling fix. I draw the line at icy roads though, either by avoiding the higher risk back roads or by avoiding the bike altogether, I don't consider the risk of injury worthwhile.
@@rogerbodger I learned not to ride in icy conditions the hard way, Roger, although it took three falls to get through. You are clearly highly self motivated with the daily long commutes you do, and then you ride for pleasure at weekends! Like you, I get grumpy if I don’t get out for a few days.
@RideWithRoy sometimes the hard way is the only way to learn 😄, in my case coming off on black ice, turning back for home only to find more black ice a few minutes later, luckily no injuries other than a bit of a knock to my confidence
What tires are you using in this video?
@@b.griffin317 I use my Ribble CGR electric for the guided rides and these are fitted with Continental Contact Plus. I previously used Marathons but wasn’t confident with the grip after having an off. The Continentals are providing a good balance between grip and puncture resistance. On the Tempest gravel bike, the one I used on this one, I run with Schwalbe G1 Allround tubeless.
@@RideWithRoy How are they off-road? I love my Contact Urbans but they are completely slick once I leave the pavement.
They are good on rough stuff but slippery on mud and wet grass.
Glad you are finally acknowledging Wendy in channel name evrn it parenthesis! Love watching from downunder!
@@johnpot7323 yes, I thought it was time as she’s now a regular feature. She can only ever be in brackets though, otherwise it would mess with the alliteration 😀
Fame will go to my head! Will bring out the diva in me … might burst into song 🤩
@wendysheehan2413 MIGHT???
Hi Roy. I was getting anxiety when you went through Nottingham centre. I hate walking through it at the best of times, never mind riding through it. Well done you two. Another great video. 👏🏻
Just ordered 55mm for gravel and must say state of our roads in Cheshire East maybe good idea for road bike
@@peterlynch2285 we need a gravel bike just to ride on our roads, Peter!
Lovely colours and what a blue sky, could have been Mediterranean. I though we had escaped a Wendy song once the duck chorus had finished 😁. I know why I avoid city centre cycling with those unpredictable pedestrians ! Lovely scenery once in the country, thanks Roy.
Found a route that might let me ride 100kms . Ordered R/W cargo bibs , seemed to fit OK (ish) , so rode in them , seemed ok . R/W contacted me re survey on winter bib tights , answered and mentioned shorts , told him I had ordered second pair in XL , he double checked my measurements , agreed XL would be better , advised shorter leg version and that he would reduce the price of the new shorts by 50% as I cannot return the first pair as I have worn them . He advised me against the winter bib tights as I would overheat on all the hills around here . Ist class kit from a first class company .
Thanks for sharing this. Good to know that my experience wasn’t unusual.
@@RideWithRoy Post script : I rode 63kms in the size L and they worked ok , but I'm still going ahead with the xl , it felt like the tight fit might have acted as sort of compression shorts and reduced fatigue ? - whatever , I went further with less bum breaks .
Yes, that’s exactly how I felt. I am sure Yuva’s initial recommendation to me was clearly aimed at athletes requiring compression, but for my 100 miles plus rides, comfort is key. I am waiting for him to release the shorter inseam winter bibs as I feel the cold so won’t be overheating 😀
Another interesting ride and nice to see familiar streets of Nottingham! Had to smile when Wahoo got tucked away in your bag, I could still hear a few squeaks, though slightly muffled. When I call at a cafe, I remove my Wahoo / phone / gloves store them in my helmet. Occasional squeaks recently caused much concern as cafe staff thought their coffee machine was on the blink :)
😀😀I’ve since turned off the turn beep so it doesn’t go mad when I decide to go totally off route, but will never turn off the radar warning. I usually leave my lights on during a cafe stop but since having several people kindly let me know ‘your lights are on’ I shall turn them off in future 😀
@@RideWithRoy Experienced same issue leaving lights on so I turn off at cafe stops. Since the cafe coffee machine 'false alarm' (at Clumber Park Cafe), I used manual Pause (auto pause is enabled) at a cafe stop. However, forgot to press Resume on departure. Wahoo didn't log that part of the ride till I realised and activated Resume.
Life used to be so simple 😀
I thought John Lewis was an odd destination for a bike ride. Now I see why!
It was a waste of time. All I wanted to do was drop my phone off for a warranty repair but they wouldn’t accept it without the tech assistant receiving it - and she had just gone to lunch. Still, a good excuse for something different.
We often get vouchers for free coffee and cake at John Lewis. Never thought of going on a bike though.
is it no such as ghosts or spirit:) prove it
You prove there is 😀👻 But I did hear a strange female whispering 🤔
I've tried lots of gloves, some better and some not so good at keeping my hands warm. I've found the inner padding seems to get squashed and less warm after a couple of winters. Shared paths can be a nightmare. I'm quite happy slowing down as we pass by, but why oh why do dog owners leave the dog on such long leads? It's not the dogs it's the inconsiderate owners. Rant over! Thanks for the video.
I try not to rant about such irresponsible dog owners, Colin, otherwise I would be ranting all of the time 😀 and don’t start me on those walkers with their hearing shut off with headphones 🤯 On the subject of gloves, as I said, I do suffer cold hands even on a mild day. I haven’t tried the Arctic gloves on a cold day, but I suspect I still won’t make it through the winter with them. I have just had a meeting with John from Vulcan and he has given me some of his latest heated gloves to try. These are thinner than the original ones and use some NASA technology. I’ll be testing them on this weekend’s two day ride. The only downside is they are general purpose gloves so don’t have the gel pads that the unheated Arctic ones do.

You can by pass pot hole alley there a cycle bath on the main road then turn left for Radcliffe
@@RBean47 yes, we normally do that but I had planned to cut across on the old railway to Cotgrave. It was only when we got to the path that we saw it was closed.
Bought all three gloves types from Luxebiking.....as yet not tried the arctic gloves, very comfy gloves. 'Ull' east yorkshire.

Nearly another bollard encounter at 08:48 I see. 😄 Thats the yodel alarm telling you it’s about to rise out of the ground! New widened path leaving Grantham? And no doubt yet more housing too …
@@greigs9384 didn’t realise that! Could have been an interesting and uplifting experience!
@@greigs9384 yes, that’s new housing along there, which at least prompted upgrading of the shared path. We are also getting another 400 new homes in Barrowby, so only the A1 will separate us from Grantham

Road bike or mountain bike. Witch is best to consider
@@tonyharris7399 it really depends on what you want to do with it, Tony. The types you mention are at extreme ends of the spectrum, so maybe something in between. I ride 80% road and 20% decent surfaced tracks, so my choice is a gravel bike. Yes, it’s a slower on the road but has the advantage that we are able to turn off to explore an inviting looking track. I have a very nice mountain bike that I haven’t ridden for about three years.
Hi Roy I have the mark 2 camera with a 64 sd card inside but the video and audio are not that good ,the video you show with your older camera is bettter than my newer version, could it be the card size affecting the quality???any help will be great thanks
That’s odd. I assume you’ve checked your settings and the lens is clean. All of my footage was filmed using a 128 GB Sandisk card, so a lower quality card may be to blame, although I doubt it. None of my footage was edited so it’s just as it came out of the camera. If you haven’t already done so, I would format the card through the app. If that doesn’t improve it I would contact Paul at Chilli Tech. allaboard@chilli-tech.com and tell him you’ve seen my results and commented here that your footage is not as good. I’m sure he will advise trying the things I’ve mentioned, so you will be ahead of him. It would also help if you can send him a clip of your footage, so he can see the issue. If you have any problem getting this resolved you are welcome to get back to me. It will also be helpful if you can let us know how it was resolved.
I should add that I don’t use audio as the quality will never be that good due to road noise.
@@RideWithRoy how do I format the card Roy? I can’t seem to get the app to work on my Samsung phone so I’m using the iPad app
@calistu67 once the camera is connected to the app, you will see ‘Camera Settings’ at the bottom of the home page. Click on that to see all of the settings. Near the bottom you will see ‘Format SD card’ so click that. I’m using the 4K camera so I’m not sure what settings you will have regarding video resolution in the MK2, but if you have options, make sure you use the highest resolution. You can also turn the sound off on this page, if you wish, and change the clip recording duration - I recommend 5 minutes. Hopefully that will help.

Great video Roy! Could you be more specific about what you need to fit the round tube into the d-fuse frame please. Giant have an instruction sheet and it seems that if you use a 30.9 mm round post then no shims are needed? static.giant-bicycles.com/Manuals/MultiseatposttypeISCinstructions_English_1667469806.pdf
Hi, Derek. This didn’t get through because of the link, and I’ve only just seen your held comment. The seat tube will be round and there is a plastic shim for the D shaped post. If after removing the shim your seatpost fits then nothing more needed, other than carbon grease. If the post diameter is too big for your post then you’ll need a corresponding round shim. It’s best to buy this from Giant.
This is a bike that I decided on after a long research as my first road bike experience. First of all, the fact that it has a gravel frame and Shimano 105 gears on it was the factor that made me decide on this bike. As soon as the bike arrived, I changed to Vittoria Terrano Dry 35mm gravel tires. I have never used the 28mm tires that came on it, so I cannot comment. I am very, very happy with the Vittoria tires. I went up to 70 km/h on a hilly road, the grip is very good. When I started to enjoy the bike, after 1 week I wanted to change the 11-32 rubles that came on it to Shimano 105 series 11-32 and make the set original. As far as I felt, it started to be a more stable transition. The brakes are quite sufficient. It is mechanical from the handlebar to the wheel, hydraulic in the disc application, that is, it is not a fully hydraulic brake system, but after running-in, they reached the level I wanted. Break-in is really important, I recommend you to do this and be careful in the first uses.. I was happy with the saddle, but I changed it to a Fizik Terra Argo Gravel saddle. These were completely arbitrary changes. I didn't feel the need to change the crank arm for now. If you ask why I chose the RC 520 model instead of the RC520 Gravel, the gravel model uses the SRAM Apex 1 groupset and has a single gear on the crank arm. The Shimano 105 set seems more reliable to me (This is completely my own opinion) and the price is different between them... In short, it is ideal in terms of weight, the gear sets are quite sufficient and I chose this bike by trusting that Decathlon offers a lifetime frame warranty.
What mudguards do you use Roy that you say are easy to put back on and how effective are they in winter?
I'm using these amzn.to/3ArBDGC. They are really easy and fast to fit/remove and provide all the protection I need. Wendy is using the same. I've given you the Amazon link but, as always, you might get a better deal elsewhere.
Please tell me Wendy isn’t getting one 🎤 🎵 👂 🙉 #prayforroy
Hello Roy, can you please recommend a really good front light to fit the the new Redshift, Top Shelf bag. Regards Dennis Volley, a very keen and long standing follower of your excellent videos.
Hi, Dennis. thanks for your support. I use two lights depending on the conditions. For a daytime 'be seen' light I have just purchased this one amzn.to/3AfdenS It's incredibly bright and lasts a long time on one charge when in flashing mode and its nice and wide. For night riding, I have used the Chilli Tech Cree light for several years www.chilli-tech.com/bike-lights/Cree-LED-Front-Bike-Light I use the larger battery and can ride for many hours on a charge. Bear in mind this has a separate battery pack but that can strap to the frame or sit in the Top Shelf bag. It is very bright and can be dipped using the button. However, I find tilting it down to avoid dazzling drivers is easier and more effective. I have the 'be seen' light mounted to the front loop on the bag and the headlight mounted to the bar for easy control. The headlight can be used as a 'be seen' light but you'll have the extra weight of the battery, which is why I use the lighter Moonlight during the day. I hope that helps.
We have the sena R2 which has built in mic and speakers .Plus a much bigger range. I think they are well worth the price .Can't imagine riding without them.
