Certainly as I've grown older the time off the bike and drop in fitness levels has really shortened. At one time I could take a two or three week holiday and not see a noticeable drop. These days I need to cycle every 3 days or I really feel it. This is a real problem when a spell of awful weather sets in. Nice to see Wendy setting the pace.
I have one pair of Decathlon shorts with pockets and wish all my shorts had them , so I was over the moon when I saw the cargo pocket bibs , although the constant climbing round here cuts my distances down so long distance kit is not really worth it , but I might try a pair for an attempt at 100kms .
Update: I have been advised by Yuva to delay placing my order until mid December as he is bringing out a shorter inseam winter bib, which will suit those of us that are vertically challenged 😀
I have five pairs of these bibs (my first pair is too big now but still good for trainer sessions), and I love them! Especially the shorter legs!!! I wish he had an even shorter leg version (get that tan line above the cargo shorts line). I've done just over 5,500 miles in RW Bibs this year(so far) and hope to get a few more 200k rides. 🙂
@@brianwalworth6016 that’s good to know, Brian. Yuva has advised me to wait until mid December to order as he is bringing out a shorter inseam winter bib.
@@timbennett6888 hi, Tim, I’m pleased it helped. I don’t know your height but Yuva has advised me to hold off ordering until mid December as he is producing a winter bib with shorter inseam.
Found a route that might let me ride 100kms . Ordered R/W cargo bibs , seemed to fit OK (ish) , so rode in them , seemed ok . R/W contacted me re survey on winter bib tights , answered and mentioned shorts , told him I had ordered second pair in XL , he double checked my measurements , agreed XL would be better , advised shorter leg version and that he would reduce the price of the new shorts by 50% as I cannot return the first pair as I have worn them . He advised me against the winter bib tights as I would overheat on all the hills around here . Ist class kit from a first class company .
@@RideWithRoy Post script : I rode 63kms in the size L and they worked ok , but I'm still going ahead with the xl , it felt like the tight fit might have acted as sort of compression shorts and reduced fatigue ? - whatever , I went further with less bum breaks .
Yes, that’s exactly how I felt. I am sure Yuva’s initial recommendation to me was clearly aimed at athletes requiring compression, but for my 100 miles plus rides, comfort is key. I am waiting for him to release the shorter inseam winter bibs as I feel the cold so won’t be overheating 😀
Ah, another very informative product review. Not a problem I have but once in awhile I wonder to myself how men can ride such long distances, especially considering the construction of some bike saddles. 🧐 I truly enjoyed your description of some people's reactions to male riders who wear bib shorts. You really have a way with words. 😂 Gave me a few chuckles. 😊 You mentioned the phenomenon of losing height. I've noticed the same thing. When I was a teenager, I was 5 foot, 7 inches; now I'm lucky to measure 5 foot 4 inches. 😢 I can't even look thru the peephole in my front door any more! It is TOUGH getting older. 🥴 I'm sure your fitness will improve quickly so you and Wendy can get back to your usual long rides. Enjoy October. Here at least, October has the BEST riding weather of the whole year. This video appeared to show a beautiful October day.
@@wendysheehan2413 -- Hi Wendy. Well, consider yourself lucky. I'm not sure if diet has anything to do with loss of height but that's what I tell myself; that I have a diet deficient in something, just don't know what. Hello Roy, greatings from the Vendée. I started riding 2 yearrs ago at age 61 with what could be called a "relaxed" tummy so sizing of bib shorts has been a bit of an issue 😮. My wife and I normally ride 2-3 times a week between 20 and 30km with the occasional ride up to 50km. After about 35km my saddle becomes a little uncomfortable but not causing sores. After watching numerous videos about saddle comfort i have come to the conclusion that they are nearly all aimed at the "younger" generation and not aimed at the mature rider. So my questions to you and your viewer's are; What saddles do you use and secondly, what is the relationship beween the saddle and chamois in providing comfort? I would love to do longer rides but the saddle discomfort put me of. Love the channel. Best regards.
@@markeasey469 hi, Mark, great to hear from you. I love the Vendee! We had a house in Haute Vienne for twenty years, but sold it a couple of years ago. If you haven’t seen it already, you might be interested in this one, as it won’t be too far from you SAS Fire from the Forest - Tragedy & Heroism in WW2 France th-cam.com/video/qVK0vw2gz74/w-d-xo.html You’ll note that I never review saddles as they are such a personal thing - everyone has their favourite that will be another rider’s pain fest. My wife bought what can be best described as a sofa during her short cycling career. I tried it and, while being super padded, was extremely uncomfortable after a few miles. Those riders using saddles that could easily double as a razor blade spend a lot of time powering through their legs so don’t put much weight on the saddle. So it’s a case of finding something that suits your touring style of cycling. Wendy and I fit that style and use the Selle Italia Sport Gel Flow, which we are now used to. But as I alluded to in the video, it’s a case of getting used to any saddle over time. I can suffer discomfort after a few weeks off the bike, but it soon comes back. To best starting point is to look up how to measure sit bones and also the correct saddle position. Buying a saddle that suits your sit bone placement is a must, as is correct positioning of the saddle. It’s unlikely that you will be able to ride much more than you do without padded shorts, but it’s essential to get the basics right first, as they are not a cure all and need to work in harmony with the seat. If you don’t want to go full Lycra, the top of the range padded undershorts from Decathlon are good to start with - but remember, no underwear 😀 Full on Lycra is the way to go as your distances increase and will provide the ultimate comfort. In all cases, it’s important to go for a quality garment to avoid the buy cheap buy twice pitfall. And then there is the shorts or bib’s question. Those with a large stomach are likely to find shorts rolling down, but they are easier when ‘answering the call.’ Bibs will provide great support and keep you warmer in cold weather and most have a scooped front to allow for the ‘wild wee’ the French so love. As I said in the video, standing up regularly eases the discomfort most of us get, even with the best kit. I’m sure you’ll receive plenty of saddle recommendations, but just remember that one man’s meat…… please keep in touch and tell us how you get on.
Many thanks for the reply and the link to your previous video on Oradour-sur-Glane. I will keep you updated on progress as we explore more of the Vendée Velo routes.
Hello Roy, what is your opinion on padded waist shorts ? I wear them with a cycling shirt which has pockets at the back during the summer or under trousers in the winter. I find them comfortable and particularly important for comfort stops !
@@stephenjacobs4692 I think they are fine if they work for you and don’t slip down. Depending on the bibs they can be pulled down at the front for comfort stops, but anything more serious requires a complete undress 😀 I do like bibs in the winter for the extra back coverage they give, but it’s a case of works best you the individual.
Hi Roy - I saw an immediate red flag when you started to talk about problems with sizing around the 06:50 mark. Having sent the precise details Yuva requires, they still didn't fit. I don't suppose all of us would get the "no problem, he just sent me a larger size" solution. There's already a real issue around cycling clothing sizing and even with the personalised sizing advice Yuva provides he still got it wrong. I've made a note of the brand but won't be buying at the moment given your experience (I'm assuming they were supplied to you free in exchange for a review?).
@@Robutube1 well firstly, yes they were supplied free of charge but there was absolutely no request for a review. In fact, when I said I would review Yuva said that was up to me and insisted I tell it how it was. As I clearly said in the video, I am not suggesting Yuva got anything wrong. The athletes he supplies are likely to be quite trim and will prefer the snug fit. I, on the other hand, prefer a more comfort fit. If that’s made clear to Yuva he will take that into account. That’s why I added the sizing comments. I am sure that in running a small business, Yuva doesn’t want to be offering free exchanges due to wrong sizes being ordered so unlikely he would get it wrong. So, for whatever reason, you saw phantom red flags. And just for further clarity, there is no commission paid by Red White, or any discount offered, as he aims to keep his pricing low. So apart from the free bibs, there is nothing in it for me other than letting viewers know about a great product - and it certainly wouldn’t be worth the time I take to make a video in exchange for a pair of bibs. As I also stated in the video, I am so pleased, I shall be buying the winter bibs as soon as they are available.
Mention of Nora Batty made me chuckle - a fond childhood memory. Not Norah, just the Last of the summer wine.
