I'm glad I found you Roy. When I started riding I followed GCN, and nearly lost heart. Thank you for never mentioning Watts, never providing fashion advice, never telling me the correct way to wear my sunglasses or telling me that if I pedal hard enough for long enough it should keep my hands and feet warm. I was looking for something down-to-earth and real to support my love of cycling.
Well thank you Mark. I’m glad you found me too 😀 the reason I don’t talk about those things is they often put people off, which seems to have happened to you. The only stat I talk about is distance and how many people we overtake. As overtaking other cyclists is a rarity 😀 I also bang the drum about age just being a number. In the next video, which should appear on Saturday, I’ll be mentioning a new segment I’ll be making with a local bike mechanic. We plan to cover basic maintenance and the common mistakes we average mortals make.
What a great challenge, I am originally from near Durham and spent many happy times on the Northumberland coast and at Whitley Bay our go to holiday when I was a toddler. Hope you are able to take in all the great scenery on your travel south, will look forward to seeing your video logs. Have a great time.
Nice looking route, looking forward to seeing the journey unfold . Wise choice to hug the coast, I used route 1 from Newcastle down and had a hard time on some of the NCN surfaces.
Looks a great route, I've always wanted to visit Lindisfarne, seen it plenty of times on the train up to Edinburgh, it's something I always look out for, as a landmark, have a great time.
I hope your expedition is going well. I received the PassPixi so thank you for that. We should be in Woodhall Spa on the 20th for a few days so if you are leading any rides we may take the opportunity to join you.
Hope you get some good weather for your trip, I'll be riding the Rebellion Way the same week. I agree with Wendy (wouldn't dare do otherwise 😂) about getting fitter as the trip goes on, however I find day 3 is often a bit of a dip day.
Have you checked the tides for Lindisfarne, and I would suggest Wendy sings Fog on the Tyne at Lindisfarne as that was one of their biggest hits. Unless she knows Lady Eleanor
She gave a rendition of Fog on The Tyne in the video, but you probably didn’t recognise it 😀 Yes, checked the tides, but as we’ve both been there we may not go over. It’s going to be a tough enough day without the threat of drowning
The profile of your view looks very challenging. Being the gentleman you are I'm almost certain you'll fit a front rack and take Wendy's panniers! Fair notice of the upcoming ride, it does of course mean Wendy has plenty of time to learn more verses of those chosen songs. Fingers crossed my wife's radiotherapy goes well and we'll be able to do our planned trip to St Malo later this year. We're planning around 40 miles each day and I have devised the flattest route I can. It may not sound a lot but we don't normally do this for 5 days. We've chickened out and will catch the train home though.😀 Nice ride and I really liked the wall covered with flowers. Thanks for sharing your plans, hoping the weather will be kind to you.
Best wishes to your wife from both of us. Colin. We both love riding in France so envy your St Malo trip. What we are doing is nothing compared to many, but for us it’s going to be a challenge, as is your 5 days. Please let us know how it goes.
Hi Roy. Regarding your Day 4 route. It looks like you intended crossing the River Tees via the Transporter Bridge. Unfortunately, the bridge is out of action and will be for some time, so you won’t get across at that point. The alternative would be to follow the A1046 to Haverton Hill and follow the Haverton Hill Road to join the A1032 road and on to the Tees Newport Bridge, and cross there. Hope that helps.
@@RideWithRoy it’s a bit busy over Newport Bridge, Roy, but there are a few cycle paths around there, which you may be able to utilise. If you need any further info just ask 👍
Hi Roy and Wendy. Unfortunately, I’m away for your Dunbar to Beadnell leg, or I’d have loved to join you for a while, Belford being my home town. A couple of things. Be aware of the tide times for your crossing to Lindisfarne. Also any puddles on the causeway are very salty seawater, so a wash off of your bikes at Beadnell would be recommended. Can I also recommend the Guru Coffee Shop in the small village of Fenwick. It’s right on your route. Claire serves lovely coffee there and locally produced savouries and tray bakes. Have a great ride and perpetual tailwinds.
Thanks, John, we will be sure to tell Claire you recommended her. Although the tides look okay for Lindisfarne, saltwater isn’t something I had considered. As we have both visited in the past, we will give Lindisfarne a miss this time. Sorry we won’t get to meet you but thank you for taking the time to make these suggestions.
Now arrived in Beverley and plan to leave about 08:00 Friday morning. If you email me on ridingwithroy@gmail.com I will send you a live track link. Looking forward to meeting you.
Hi Both, we are in the areas you are visiting but we are pursuing our other interests of Photography & bird watching. We are staying in Scarborough & Beverly as well. What day do you start your ride so we can see if our dates match. Thanks, Lawrence & Brigitte (we met last at the TOB in Newark on Trent)
Okay Roy, how hard did you have to twist Wendy's arm to get her agreement for this 'longest adventure ever'? 😁 I've done my share of long distance trips by bicycle and learned that it's not really for me. If I were in your neighborhood though, I would definitely meet up at one of your coffee stops. As it is, I'll be cheering for you and will enjoy the resulting video. 🎶...... Remember me to one who lives there. She once was a true love of mine.🎶 The missing phrase. 😊👍 I'll put out a wish into the universe that you have wonderful weather, tailwinds, no mechanical difficulties or punctures.
Thanks, Linda, I have every confidence that you can influence the weather 😀 We do get lost regularly so could well find ourselves over your way😳 It was actually Wendy who persuaded me, although I don’t think she fully grasped the enormity of it.
@@RideWithRoy -- OH, gracious! You'd really be off course if you found yourself in my neck of the woods. 😅 What with the Atlantic Ocean needing to be crossed. Wendy, this trip was YOUR idea? Did you trade riding the audax? You both have a great time. Don't get lost!!
Wendy promised a dry week with tailwinds, Sean, so mine are also off 😀 Joking apart, we use easy fit clip on mudguards so can easy add them for rides that threaten rain.

Love the ‘struggle cam’ on the way up the hill Roy with Wendy zig zagging away behind you!
Wendy was tacking 😀⛵️
Trying to get on the camera shot 😂

@RideWithRoy yes heard her version of fog on the Tyne, better than mine, my singing has the tonal qualities of a dying constipated walrus 🤣🤣🤣

That helps hugely, Paul, thank you. I’ll change the route accordingly 👍
Did I see the word “hill” ??!?

Shame to miss the Transporter Bridge. It is THE Middlesbrough icon. Highly recommended Go take a look anyway

Just having coffee with Claire
That’s great Roy. I hope you weren’t disappointed. So sad to miss you. Good luck with the rest of your trip.
Quite the opposite. Delightful lady, great coffee and in a wonderful location. She was so busy I doubt she closed on time.
Hi Roy, any idea what time you will reach Gainsborough? Id be happy to meet up and ride with you to Newark. Good luck with this epic ride!
Not sure yet so I'll update you on Friday morning.

Yes, but by the time we get to Newcastle we’re nearly home 😀
Never take your mudgards off because it rains in summer in England and Ireland leave them on all year. good video.
But more weight…..

There will be thousands of people lining the whole route, bands playing music flag waving. You will be so impressed the ride will be easy.
We anticipated that, Richard, so have been working with various police forces along the route 😂
*Update* Northumbria police has ordered in more crowd control barriers 😳
Do you mean hill top farm
Yes, at Asfordby. We are always amazed at the great service as we have to race to the table to get there before the food 😀
