Yes! Hai, Toranaga - Sama & No Anjin -San!💯 Domo🙏
Crimson Legacy
Este es el verdadero shogun de los años 1980
What are clouds, but an excuse for the sky? What is life, but an escape from death?
I prefer this version of Yabu's seppuku scene than the 2024 version, along with his "death poem". In the 2024 version they seemed to have turned what Mama-san (the brothel owner lady) said about her corpse being fed to dogs and turned that into Yabu's death poem.
🏆
I stopped watching the new series after a character in this scene died. He shouldn't have.
I liked this man.
Yabu was a traitorous, cruel, and outright vicious bastard. He was also the most interesting character in a book full of them.
Just watched Frankie Sakai in his role in “Mothra” 1960
These actors almost look like real life samurai
I am glad Lord Toranaga allowed Yabu this honorable death.
❤"A felhők azért vannak ,hogy lehessen égbolt. Az élet csupán egy pillangó álma,a halál viszont az öröklét útja"🌌👁️⚡🖤🙏
🏆
A much better scene than the 2024 show. People think I hate the new show but by itself, it's ok. But a LOT of it felt wrong in tone. Here, we see the actual bond between Yabu and Blackthorne. It had respects. Blackthorne earned respect from the Japanese vs the new show he's treated like shit
It's a seesaw. I agree with you on this scene. Also no problem watching this version with my 12 years old. The new show is a bit gory at this kind of scenes and I definitely can't watch it with my kids now. But the new show also does so many scenes much better than the old show. Some of my favorites: Blackthorne's reaction when Mariko offers him a boy. Fujiko's departure from her husband and her baby. Blackthorne bringing Fujiko to the sea to scatter the ashes of her husband and her baby. Toranaga's face expression after Blackthorne digged him out after the earthquake.
@@XiaoP76 Yes, the new show had MOMENTS but overall, I prefer the 1980 show
@@Excalibur01 yes, I think so too. Yet, I definitely like the new one as well, it is to admire that someone dared to take another shot at the topic at all. They are actually so different, the new one being much darker, which fits the time period.
@@XiaoP76 I disagree with that last part. Is the period grim? Yeah, kinda but realistically "fit the time period" doesn't mean "it's dark and wet and all tone is also dark" All time periods have grim things but even during war and conflict there's color in the world. The world is not dark and rainy and every is pissed off. Also, this is adapting to the book, which is only loosely based on the time period. It took a lot of liberties. Making this historically accurate can work but can also work against the fiction. Also, I did not like certain moments that aren't culturally correct like when "Spoiler no name" kills himself in front of Toranaga in front of everyone without ceremony. The Japanese is all about rituals. If he wanted to commit seppuku and declare it, he'd prepare himself not do it right then and there. That's modern writing shock value. A LOT of this show has the hints of modern writing shock value.
@@Excalibur01 Yes, you are right. There should have been a ritual like with Mariko or Yabu. "Spoiler no names" actually doesn't die in the original show and in the book. There is not even one sunny day on the new show, I noticed that too.
I guess this will expiate his shame of being such a traitor.
🏆
He dies like a boss.
👍
For a standup comedian, he sure could act. Amazing performance
He was an actor as well (acting in both comedies and dramas), but yes, he really had a "presence" and did a fantastic job. Much like Pat Morita (Karate Kid), also a comedian. Must be something about those Japanese comedians, hehe.
Agreed, I thought he was brilliant, very entertaining - not only with his line deliveries but also his facial expressions.
Well, I heard that Steve Carrell once stated thet "a good comedian should be aware that he is in a comedy". I guess good comedians must good actors also.
Frankie Sakai portrayed a Yabu that was much closer to the one in the novel than the 2024 actor. The 2024 actor, while he may be a good actor, came off more like a Yakuza than a Daimyo.
4:20 “where my maid was with you.” Watching the scene last night is the first time I realized it was not Fujiko. She is not Mariko’s maid; she is John’s consort. 4:34 “Fujiko-san and I… we thought she (the maid) would be a pleasing gift.” Fujiko-san is a samurai, not a maid. 4:48 “we (Fujiko and Mariko) anointed her (the maid) with my perfume” The maid remains anonymous, which is why John is able to let it go.

the pilots bond is much more prevalent in this one than the new. rodriguez himself is also done so much better here
Yoko Shimada the best ❤❤❤
So much better than the re-boot
In many ways, this was the better adaptation. Her Seppuku ritual was cinematic. Slow mo, staging. Yabu was a slimier villain too :).
The original Shogun was much better that the newer version, I watched both
At first, Fujiko-san hated the idea of being "the barbaryan's" consort. Hated him. I think things begun to change at the pistol's episode.
the version from 1980 is classes better. It has soul and modesty. The modern woman is empty!
lyrics please!
Did you ever SEE so many pissed off Japanese guys at a white guy getting this honor? 😄
Dude must have been tired of living not to bow to Omi when everyone else did.
I had to word the search just right to find this scene.
1:55 i wish i could understand what omi says.
I heard: makoto Koi gozaimasu Maybe “truly I love her” acknowledging his gratitude and promise the gift will not be in vain.
I was 12 or 13 years old when I saw the series on TV in the mid-80s. I still remember exactly how impressed I was by the strict customs and rules and how the smallest mistake could be punished with death. Up until then, I had no idea about Japan in general, and certainly not about feudal Japan. But the whole series impressed me deeply and aroused my interest in Japan. I still have the 8-hour version on my PC and watch it every 2-3 years. So far, I have only seen trailers and individual scenes of the new version, but I didn't like them. I think I'll stick with the original from my youth.
I read the book before the TV series came out and remember laughing out loud at this scene. 😄 It amuses me to remember that not only did Mariko-san offer Anjin-san a woman of his choice (or a boy), she even offered a DUCK 🦆if that were desired. As Clavell portrayed them, the Japanese were very matter-of-fact about sexual preferences and were not burdened with the Christians' extreme moral views on sexuality. If anyone here has read the book more recently than I did (in 1975 or 76!) I would appreciate them confirming or correcting my recollection. If I am correct, it will please me greatly. I am 64 and hoping that my brain stays healthy as I age. 😁 👍

The new version doesn't seem to understand the motivations and the characters of the original, and where the 1980's original series had everything fall into place naturally, because it was well-written as a fairly faithful version of the book, the 2024 iteration seems to skip over details and the result is things fall flat; case in point in the original, Toranaga scorns Blackthron for rebelling against his legitimate kind and says there is never any justification for rebellion against one's master, and Blackthorn answers "But there are mitigating circumstances" and Toranaga answers "there are no mitigating circumstances for rising up against your king", to which Blackthorn responds "unless I win", and Toranaga says :Yes, foreigner with an impossible-sounding name. Yes, you have named the ONLY mitigating circumstance! In this scene Blackthorn redeems himself in the eyes of Toranaga, not only as being more than a simple rebel, which Toranaga views with utmost disdain, as his own uprising is out of loyalty to his now-dead emperor, but also as a smart strategist that might be helpful to him in his upcoming battles. In this clip, there is no chastising by Toranaga (who btw seems very normal in this version, as opposed to the regal depiction of Mifune) and therefore no real reason for Blackthorn to say "unless I win". He could have said any number of things in response, but the "unless" only makes sense if there is the preceding back and forth about rebellion and mitigating circumstances... Another example of how the1980's series got things right, was the whole build-up and conspiracy between the Jesuits and the Crown and how they ran the Black Ship, which was unknown to Blackthorn. It was also a reason the Jesuits wanted to eliminate him. In this version however, he arrives in Japan already knowing this, thereby greatly reducing the impact of him being like a fish out of water and the justification for being a target, above and beyond the religious differences. This is also what makes Rodriguez such an interesting character, because his friendship with Blackthorn is a tenuous one: on the one hand he does have a loyalty to his country, but on the other hand, he is mature enough to understand there are other reasons for being friends and loyal beyond simply praying to the same version of god. He holds his trust in pilots as a brotherhood, almost above that of his loyalty to king and country and even to God. So having Blackthorn just throw that out at the first chance, is missing the point of these characters and their motivations. Again, I feel the writers had no idea what they were doing with the original material and were more interested in putting their own spin on things than on being faithful to the source material. Lastly, I HATE that it is so grey in the show. The original had a lot of sun-drenched scenes that showcased Japan's beauty, and I feel this is lost here. I could go on and on, but as far as I'm concerned, there was no reason to remake this and the new one has not brought anything the original failed in. Enjoy if you like it, but for me the choice is clear.
🏆🏆🏆 Arigato Gozaimashita.
I’ve been looking for this clip! Thanks for downloading it

The Japanese version of "Won't someone rid me of this meddlesome priest."
Blackthorne originally spared Urano's life when he selected him to join his ranks. At that time Yabu recommended to reject him (since he used to be Christian and may not be loyal to Blackthorne). However in this scene Urano proved his loyalty to Blackthorne.
Gosh! I remember seeing this series for the first time... Truly enjoyed this epic story.
Eat 730 to 1030 Talmage 1030 shower after shower Andrew Jackson
A load of other stuff here may look and sound dated, today, but there’s •still• nothing like Toshirō Mifune. On the other hand, the score of Maurice Jarre - who did so much wonderful work in numerous film scores - just makes me want to roll my eyes, listening to this. Bombastic, overbearing Orientalism hardly begins to cover it.
Did anyone notice that every person in the room sprung up ready to defend Ishido, but Yabu did not.
Yabu was a vassal of Toranaga, not Ishido
Another important Arc, in this Saga. Anjin, , knows he must Act within their customs, to get respect. Willing to die in the name of Honor. Fantastic scene Thanks
Shogun and Xena: Warrior Princess (For Xena, i haven't watch yet, except playing PS1 game of it) were the one i enjoy of. As an Indonesian person who had so familar with Japanese and American since when i was a kid back in early near of mid 2000s to these days, the 1980 Shogun was reason for me to watch than 2024 in my opinion which i like it. I feel like when i see Mariko especially her English with her accent sees Anjin (John Blackthorne) before moving on in episode 1, i just even like that scene. So for the sake of November 18th i always look forward, i was watching 1980 Shogun right now. 😌 👍
