I prefer this version and the original novel over the newer series and this scene illustrates a large part of it. The book and the original miniseries do a far better job of illustrating Blackthorne's hero's journey. In the modern version Blackthorne learns enough of the language and customs to get by, but doesn't fundamentally change who he is. In the book and the original series, however, Blackthorne assimilates into Japanese culture and custom to the point where he and other reflect that he has become more Japanese than European in his habits and attitudes. This scene shows the way he deftly navigates the culture of the court in ways that the modern version of Blackthorne never could. That version is still a gaijin, still a barbarian in his heart, where this version truly is Samurai.

There is something strange about the scene where the samurai is walking down the hallway. In the past, Japanese people did not swing their arms when walking. This was because it would cause their kimonos to slip off. They walked in a way called the "Namba walk."

At the beginning, there is a fence in a Japanese garden. This is a modern fence; there were no fences like this in Japanese gardens at the time. Although it is a common sight now, this fence was a mistake.

I just dislike so many things about the new version. The cartoonish cinematography with the blue-green haze, the throaty public schoolboy voiced, baby faced Blackthorne, the overdramatised screaming. Fujiko went from being a dutiful wife to an aggressive boss babe. Jesus christ.

I like the 2024 version because it is more authentic and it is not about the look of the actors. The setting, costume and emotion in latest adaptation feels more real. Nevertheless I appreciate the 80's version too. Kudos to all of them!

The new one is funny when Blackthorne says "nonsense, they carry swords everywhere."

Nothing I ever saw on TV as a child disturbed me more than this moment. I was 12, but wow, did I get it: the terror of these exiles manifesting as racism, the sickness that pushed Vinck's behavior right off the rails, the consequences for Blackthorne. Not to make light of the show's limits at all, but this scene had a visceral power I'll never forget.

I can’t believe how much attention was given to the awards for the new Shogun. I mean I liked it ok but I read the books and watched the original in the 80s. So it’s hard for me to understand how the recent adaptation of Shogun which is nothing truly like James Clavell originally works plus it’s mostly CGI it completely dismisses Black Thorn as the main character and almost completely comes off as a woke piece that diminishes the whole point to begin with. Not to mention it almost completely ignores the Catholic presence that was the most central to the plot. Unreal I don’t think James Clavell would approve. Again read all the books Tai Pan Noble House etc. I respect the orient because of his works. This was an obvious display of rewriting of his work.

Proof that Christian terrorism and conquest was way bigger and worse than any other religion of the past 2000 years.

I absolutely love this tv mini series of 1980, read the book watched the mini series. Started watching the new version but could not get past the first episode, which seem crass and vulgar compared to the beauty and elegance and strength of the first. To be fair though, I believe I should and shall try again to watch the remake.

Blackthorne was right to be wary of the woman who entered his room. She’ll need to be searched. Thoroughly. 😉

The 2024 version makes no sense

Scenes like this on the surface seem so unimportant, but it really helps the viewer see and understand the progression and relationship between Mariko and Blackthorne. 👍👍😀

Splendidamente attraente, bravissimo, un vero artista in una terra particolare, ripercorrendo vicende appartenenti a culture differenti, ma molto ricche di imprevisti. Shogun libro d’avventura diventa anche per Chamberlain la storia di un “”Samurai”” dell’altro mondo. Leggendo e guardando ci addentriamo in un luogo tutto da scoprire. Grazie Richard grande pure in questa interpretazione. Un’avventura particolare!❤👏👏👏💯👑🇮🇹.

Марико, спасибо мудрой женщине, убеждает блекторна оценить мастерство лучника. Блекторн, увидев точность стрельбы, протрезвел (немного) и правильно поступил указав прислуге дома, что эти стрелы будут здесь всегда в память о мастерстве великого лучника. 2k24: Все герои современного сериала "маслянные". Точнее любая их оценка "соскальзывает" при следующих сценах. В этом сериале Блекторн "обезьянка-гайджин" для местных. Сцена со стрельбой лорда Бунтаро вообще эпична! Там, как у луковицы, можно слои подтекстов снимать. В 80-х годах кино было более прямолинейно. "Пьяный" Бунтаро стреляет и хочет убить навязанную жену, жена хочет умереть, самураю запрещено убивать дочь военначальника которого он ненавидит. Стрелы в столбе уже не так важны...
