  • Shogun: Lord Toranaga (Toshiro Mifune ) reminds Mariko-San (Yoko Shimada) that her opinions do not matter. Interpreters should intrepret. Later, Lord Toranaga assembles his army, and gives his powerful speech. All are present. Taiko drums are beaten, and stop, as Toranaga begins: "The time has come, when war can no longer be avoided. A war against me! Rather than wait for the battle to begin, who will join me in attacking first?!!! Anjin, Kore, today, I was almost killed. Today, the Anjin-San (Richard Chamberlain) pulled me out of the ground. That is the second. Maybe even the third time that he has saved my life. The Anjin-San is given a fishing village to the south of Yedo, the right to recruit 200 Samurai Retainers, 10 Horses, and 20 Kimonos.
Note: This scene is longer than previously uploaded. Tanoshimu.

Seeing Kashigi Yabu there, I am reminded that aside from Lord Toranaga and the Lady Mariko, it was Yabu-sama that first recognized Anjin-san as something special when he first met him, and in each subsequent meeting.
Yes, Yabu was a traitor, but he respected Anjin-san. He actually talked to him probably more than any other "noble" did; more than Lord Buttaro, who only had contempt for the gai-gin or Lord Ishido , who was of like-mind with Lord Buttaro or Omi-san, who was sort of indifferent, if not a bit resentful (still respected, though) till later.
Lord Yabu learned to respect Anjin-san first, when he:
    1) stood up for his right against Omi-san as a Hatamoto and
    2) when he was prepared to commit Seppuku if Lord Yabu didn't lift the threat of killing everyone in the village if he failed to learn to speak Japanese.
Lord Yabu talked to Anjin-san and laughed with him, and appreciated his independence (such as it was), his intelligence and verve in "making it" in a new world. It's the reason he gave him his sword in front of all his retainers and other samurai, and called them dung-eaters.

The funny thing is, at least according to the book, Toranaga's plan to attack first in a risk-everything-gamble is called "Crimson Sky"...and *spoiler alert*...although he mentions it to many different people, it is all a ruse - he has no intention of attacking first, the plan is to draw out his enemy Ishido from his castle and meet him on favorable ground in the mountains (which is where the final confrontation actually did take place historically, at Sekigahara). In short, *Toranaga is lying to the entire assembly here*, and they believe him...just as he planned, as his actual plot relies on Ishido hearing about Crimson Sky and trying to strike Toranaga first, leaving him exposed.

the remake was Shogun in name only - decent story and amazing visuals just too dark but it was not Clavell's Shogun
