I was alive for the TV series and I read the book. Not better. Different. The 2024 series portrays Blackthorne more accurately and in the spirit of an honorable Englishman.
4:10 ...Buntaro is correct, he could significantly outshoot any musketeer with greater accuracy. But he's also probably the best archer in Japan, so unless those 500 archers are at or near his proficiency, the musket's greater piercing power and damage evens things out pretty quickly once you dip below master-level competency.
absolute nonsense. the musket would have EASILY outdistanced the bow, even the pistols he had with him. as for accuracy, thats a toss up because it completely depends on the skill of the shooter. both weapons can be as accurate or innacurate depending on who is shooting them. a skilled marksman can make the musket far more accurate than a bowman would have been at that time.
@@orion7741 ...but then the archer would shoot at a much higher rate than the muzzle-loaded musket would have been capable of, so you'd better hope that first musket shot hits (or that you're sufficiently outside the bow's range that you have time to reload). For the contest being talked about in the clip, Buntaro definitely would have had the edge, considering his skill level.
A thing not discussed by the characters is the price. For 100 muskets how many bows and arrows one could buy (at the time)? Muskets were only to be used in small numbers for a while.
Proto-flintlocks, the snaplock, were invented around 1517. The true flintlocks were developed in France in the early 17th century. They were used alongside the match and wheellock's as those were gradually being phased out, for the simpler flintlock. He could have had the other lock mechanisms, true; however, it is conceivable that Blackthorne could have had an early version of a flintlock at this period in time. The use of technology does not start and stop on a whim, it takes time. Medieval arming swords and longswords were still in use in the first few decades of the Renaissance, you don't get a rapier right from the onset. The perception of time is tricky, it plays with your head. We tend to associate certain things with certain times because it's easier. The mammoth was still roaming in North America and parts of Russia when the Great Pyramids were built. Isn't history great.
I have no idea why so many famous critics are raving over the 2024 version. Did they even bother to see the 1980 version? Except for the fact that the 1980 version did not have English subtitles, there's nothing else that's better about the 2024 version. What makes people rave about it? The lighting is poor, even in broad daylight it's dark in the 'land of the rising sun' 😂; bad acting, non-existent chemistry between the lovers, I could go on and on.....
@@dgib1694 I can empathize with your opinion, but I think it's easier to empathize with the year 2024. The reason is that the new Shogun has a more solid historical background. In this video, some villagers are surprised at the existence of matchlock guns, but in fact, it was around this time that high-quality guns became available thanks to Japan's excellent gunsmithing technology, and mass production began. As a result, matchlock guns became popular among villagers on the frontier. Therefore, this drama focuses on cannons, which were not yet very developed in Japan at the time. Historically, Japan sought to learn from Britain how to use and manufacture high-quality cannons.
0:36 Although they had excellent blacksmithing technology, their ability to invent new things was weak, and Japan's only strength at that time was to keep reproducing and improving existing things. Afterwards, due to national isolation, he did not have the opportunity to learn new techniques, and continued to use old-fashioned rifles using matchlocks for 200 years. Another reason is that Japan's natural environment made it easy to handle old guns. In that sense, I think the flintlock rifle shown in the video was something new to the villagers at the time, but I think it's understandable that they were using it as a weapon.
Each version has it's plus's and bonuses. I prefer the 80's version, but Taipan and Noble house could have been better. Unfortunately they are not moving on with the next book due to political reality. The final book Whirlwind is incredibly timely. Politics are completely complicated.
For me, 2024 "remake" was difficult to follow, at best. Or maybe, it's because i read the book in 1980, then watched the series?! Remake was hodge-podge, jumblitis...imo

Do Itashimashite...
This show was a huge hit in Bulgaria more than 40 years ago.
Chamberlain reminds me of Commander Riker in STNG. Maybe it’s the beard.
I'm watching the newer version of Shogun and it fades in comparison, the older version was so much better, especially acting
I watched this many years ago and I was impressed by the culture of the Japanese people.
