  • Shogun: Lord Zatachi-San (Yosuke Natsuki) marches with his Samurai Army in Yokose, in a secluded area, to meet with Lord Yoshi Toranaga (Toshiro Mifune) about Council business. While there, Father Martin Alvito (Damien Thomas) speaks with Anjin-San (Richard Chamberlain). Alvito translates and says that Lord Toranaga has been ordered to Osaka Castle by The Council Of Regents, and Lord Zataki-San has said that if Lord Toranaga does not come, that he should commit Seppuku (suicide). Toranaga said he would give his answer tomorrow. Lord Toda Buntaro has been ordered by Lord Toranaga to make peace with Mariko-San (Yoko Shimada), so he is preparing The Japanese Tea Ceremony.
Note: Did you notice how in this scene, it is a beautiful and sunny day in Japan, where Shogun 1980 was filmed, but in Shogun 2024, it rains almost every day in Vancouver, Canada, where it was filmed. Personally, I prefer the landscape of Japan. Tanoshimu!
Shogun, The Millions-Of-Copies Sold Novel, was written by James Clavell. The Masterpiece Television Mini Series was Produced by NBC and Paramount Studios, Directed by Jerry London, Screenplay by Eric Bercovici, Director Of Photography Andrew Laszlo, Production Executive Frank Cardea, with Production Designer Joseph Jennings. Shogun starred: Richard Chamberlain (as Pilot-Major John Blackthorne), Toshiro Mifune (as Lord Yoshi Toranaga), Yoko Shimada (The Lady Toda Buntaro Mariko), Frankie Sakai (as Lord Kashigi Yabu), Alan Badel (as Jesuit Priest, The Father Visitor Dell’Aqua), Michael Hordern (as Friar Domingo), Damien Thomas (as Jesuit Priest, Father Martin Alvito), John Rhys-Davies (Portuguese Pilot Vasco Rodrigues), Vladek Sheybal (as Portuguese Captain Ferriera), George Innes (as Ship Hand Vinck), Leon Lissek (as Portuguese Jesuit Father Sebastio), Yuki Meguro (as Samurai Warrior, Kashigi Omi), Hideo Takamatsu (as Lord Toda Buntaro), Hiromi Senno (as Consort Usagi Fujiko), and Nobuo Kaneko (as Lord Ishido Kazunari). Many people were involved in the making of this classic masterpiece. There was an A-List Cast, an A-List Director, an A-List Musical Score from Maurice Jarre, and A-List production quality with amazing sets and intricate costumes, detailed for that time era. Narration by the famous and powerful voice of Orson Welles.

One of my biggest disappointments with the new shogun, and many modern movies and tv shows in general, is that it was just cool and drab at all times.

It’s fun to watch these small scenes I own the full serious on DVD. I wish they played the series somewhere.

One of the many factors that make the original series superior to the remake is Orson Welles' narration. It allowed the actors like the incomparable Toshiro Mifune, to speak Japanese without burdening the non-Japanese audience from having to read subtitles. His narration was concise and informative. It allowed the dialogue and drama to flow freely without any distractions.

I wonder, what would have happened if the Council had simply accepted Toranaga's resignation, filled the empty spot and carried on, instead of forcing Toranaga in a position where he has no choice, but to act?

      Good question.
But there was a reason why the late Taiko chose these 5 men to be the regents, and Toranaga knew the remaining 4 would have a hard time agreeing on who the new 5th member should be. Also, Toranaga had a secret agreement with one of the remaining regents…
And the other regents envied Toranaga’s prestige and wealth, and feared his ambitions. He was one of the few daimyo who didn’t take part in the Taiko’s invasion of Korea that was ultimately a failure.

I love the show, but that introductory music there sounded like Scooby and the gang were about to start a musical montage.

Hai, Casey-San. I actually do not know of anywhere in Shogun 1980 where Anjin swears. What swear word does he use in this scene? Arigato Gozaimashita.
