  • Shogun: Mariko-San (Yoko Shimada) explains the gift of Fujiko-San (Hiromi Senno) to Anjin-San (Richard Chamberlain) with her perfume in the night. Mariko sent Fujiko-San, scented with her perfume, and told her not to say anything, but just to touch. They did it as a gift for Anjin-San.
Note: This is a different edit than the one previously uploaded that precedes with Fujiko-San waking Anjin-San, and then into this scene. Tanoshimu.

This more elaborate conversation works much better than the passing sentence or two in the present version.
The ambiguity remains for both, however.

I agree. The 2024 version took bits and pieces of longer conversations from the novel and put a piece here a piece there...

After watching the new series, I was just thinking what an incredibly special thing, Yoko did with that character. She was beautiful and charming and intriguing. She not only made John fall in love with her, but she made all of us fall in love with her. She's just wonderful in this movie. I feel none of that with the new series unfortunately.

In the new version, as I watched the ninja invasion and explosion of the door scene, I was thinking: Finally, she's dead.
When I saw the 1980 version with Yoko Shimada, I'm sure someone was peeling onions near me.

I saw this in 1980, and I was sad when Mariko died. With the new series, Mariko is a cold snake, and an unreliable translator. Her dead left me indifferent.

@@TheRocco96 In terms of showing a bit more of the Japanese side with a shift in focus, the 2024 version is OK.
Location, weather, choice of filters or color grading... absolutely terrible.
Developing the characters to make them memorable or make the audience like the characters... Zilch! Zero! Nada! Didly Squat!

I remember this scene as a young boy. It revealed to me the power a woman has to make one night of passion feel like paradise with the man she chooses. The conversation Mariko has with Anjin the morning after was like a gentle but firm reminder of the political realities keeping them apart.

It's a shame that the FX series didnt develop Blackthorne and Mariko's relationship better. It had a start abd a finish, but it felt like the middle was missing. There really wasn't enough development to warrant his plea to ask her to live for him.
That's the biggest problem with both the 1980 and the 2024 series; they don't have enough time to fleah out Clavell's novel, so something always has to be sacrificed to try to fit the story in.

Mariko was Blackthorn's reason for accepting having any place in the Japans. Without her, he just wants to get back to England. I guess they didn't think a story about a Western man falling in love with a Japanese woman wouldn't be acceptable to "modern audiences"?

I'm not sure the TV adaptation cleared this up, beyond the subtle hint at the end of the scene, but the book is pretty clear that Mariko is lying to Blackthorne here - she explains to Fujiko in a separate scene that it really was her. Given that we see later that Mariko and Blackthorne are obviously lovers I suspect a lot of viewers made the connection with this scene, but I can testify I missed the inference on my first watch-through until I read the book.

Hai, TomG1555-San. Excellent Comments. In the novel, Mariko initially tells Anjin-San that it was her maid, Koi, and that her and Fujiko thought it would be a good idea, and to put Mariko's perfume on her, and to not speak, but only touch. In Shogun 1980, it appears that it was Fujiko-San that went in with Anjin-San. Arigato Gozaimashita.

I think that it was Mariko that went in with Blackthorne and then lied about it
      just like in the novel
Blackthorne is not buying her explanation about the maid but accepts her denial out of the understanding about the danger
that's why he asks how can he tell the maid that he loves her with that actually referring to her and not the maid
      it's like in the novel
