  • Shogun: Pilot-Major John “Anjin-San” Blackthorne (Richard Chamberlain) and Black Ship Pilot Vasco Rodrigues discuss The Japanese Slave Galley they are on, and how strong The Samurai Warriors are that are rowing. They discuss directions, and the Japanese coastline. Blackthorne asks Rodrigues about Toranaga and what they will do to him, but Rodrigues replies that he does not know. He says they are both tired, and that Blackthorne should go below and rest in his cabin. Anjin-San goes below, in Rodrigues’ cabin and falls asleep.
Note: This scene is longer than the one previously uploaded. Tanoshimu.
Shogun, The Millions-Of-Copies Sold Novel, was written by James Clavell. The Masterpiece Television Mini Series was Produced by NBC and Paramount Studios, Directed by Jerry London, Screenplay by Eric Bercovici, Director Of Photography Andrew Laszlo, Production Executive Frank Cardea, with Production Designer Joseph Jennings. Shogun starred: Richard Chamberlain (as Pilot-Major John Blackthorne), Toshiro Mifune (as Lord Yoshi Toranaga), Yoko Shimada (The Lady Toda Buntaro Mariko), Frankie Sakai (as Lord Kashigi Yabu), Alan Badel (as Jesuit Priest, The Father Visitor Dell’Aqua), Michael Hordern (as Friar Domingo), Damien Thomas (as Jesuit Priest, Father Martin Alvito), John Rhys-Davies (Portuguese Pilot Vasco Rodrigues), Vladek Sheybal (as Portuguese Captain Ferriera), George Innes (as Ship Hand Vinck), Leon Lissek (as Portuguese Jesuit Father Sebastio), Yuki Meguro (as Samurai Warrior, Kashigi Omi), Hideo Takamatsu (as Lord Toda Buntaro), Hiromi Senno (as Consort Usagi Fujiko), and Nobuo Kaneko (as Lord Ishido Kazunari). Many people were involved in the making of this classic masterpiece. There was an A-List Cast, an A-List Director, an A-List Musical Score from Maurice Jarre, and A-List production quality with amazing sets and intricate costumes, detailed for that time era. Narration by the famous and powerful voice of Orson Welles.

The 2024 series misses out on the instances of joviality depicted in bith Clavell's novel and the 1980 adaptation.
In our era there seems to be too much focus on making dramas grimdark, and drained of moments of levity.

    Hello Toranaga-sama,
I am glad to see you are still posting clips.
Now that Shogun 2024 is over, what are your thoughts overall? Will you make a video on this?

Hai, Zank-Frappa-San. Domo for asking this question. I had not thought of doing a review, but I am now considering it.
      My overall thoughts are:
      - Shogun 1980 was and is a Masterpiece of Television and Film. There was so much rich culture, mixed with edge of your seat entertainment.
      - Shogun 2024 fell so very short in all of my expectations. From adherence to the original text, to blue-tint filtering, to Vancouver rainy days, to mediocre forgettable performances, to blatant changes like Blackthorne seconding Mariko, to melancholy keyboard music with very little, if any, Japanese instruments, to no bathing scenes. I am afraid my review would be hated by Shogun 2024 lovers, and agreed by Shogun 1980 lovers.
So, we will see, if I have the time, but it is something that I am considering. Domo again for the suggestion. Excellent Comments. Arigato Gozaimashita.

The only memorable character in 2024 is Fujiko.
The memorable characters in 1980, in no particular order or ranking
    Blackthorne
    Toranaga
    Yabu
    Mariko
    Fujiko
    Ishido
    Alvito
    Rodrigues
    Lady Ochiba
    Dell'Aqua
    Fujiko
    Old gardener
    Kiku
    Omi
The 1980 version felt like every member of the cast and production team put in 110% of their dedication and energy.

Hai, ALwinDigital-San. Fujiko 2024, as I think we had previously discussed, could have been cast as Mariko 2024. However, as you excellently stated, there were numerous memorable characters in Shogun 1980, and each one of them could have had their own novel, but perhaps not 1200 pages. Hai, Mifune, Chamberlain, Shimada, Sakai, Meguro, and all of the Shogun 1980 Cast put in 110%, and it clearly shows.
Highly Excellent Comments, as usual, Tomodachi. Domo Arigato Gozaimashita.

General Tom Griffin….. I think everyone that subscribes to your channel is a passionate about the book and the 1980 Series as you are. You ought to start a separate piece on the book, the 1980s Series (the BEST) and the new one.
It IS an interesting opportunity to review the books and its adaptation to the two Series. There were changes from the book and the original Series, many of which I loved.
The new one had to try to do a different story and obviously with new actors.
To me the original is far superior: the setting in Japan, the choice of Toranago, Anjin-san, Mariko, Omi, Buntaro, and on and on. The chronological story had to be different in the new Series, hence the flashbacks.
For the new Series: to be shot in Vancouver just lost it all with the dark, dreary locations, the actors didn’t work and the story changes were only ok. No passion with Mariko and Anjin-san. Omi didn’t work at all.
Anyway, you could do a comparison of the book to the 1980s Series, noting the changes. And then the new Series with those.
    Anyway, love the Channel!

Hai, WilliamSuper213-San. Domo for the very kind comments. That would make a good series of videos: The Best of each. I agree: the Vancouver scenery was not authentic and made it look like a group of Japanese were living in Canada. Agreed: No passion at all between Mariko 2024 and Anjin-San 2024: Why not? The novel was also a love story, and you could read for pages and pages about it. Agreed: Omi was not nearly the same hard-core warrior that was in Shogun 1980. My only problems are: Time, and unfortunately, this channel is not monetized, so, it is all a labor of love. However, if God permits me more time, I would be happy to edit those changes from novel to Shogun 1980, and novel to Shogun 2024. Excellent Comments - Arigato Gozaimashita.

In the 2024 series they made Toranaga prevent Anjisan from committing seppaku not Omi-san which if you look at it, really started Blckthorne on his path of trully understanding what it means to be samurai and japanese. Way to many scenes glossed over in 2024 from 1980 mini series. The entire boat series really established the relationships between Blackthorne and Rodrigues, friends as pilot's yes, but ennemies as far as religion and politics dictates.
But. I did enjoy the final scene with Fujiko and Anjin, together one last time saying goodbye to the ones that they loved so much. Fujiko for the win in either series 1980 or 2024, both actresses nailed their characters/roles; 2024 Fujiko in my honest opinion honered 1980 Fujiko for sure.

I agree. As much as I appreciate Sanada’s efforts, he’ll never match Toshiro Mifune, let alone the narration by Orson Wells. The 2024 remake was dark and depressing and barely followed a few moments from Clavell’s novel. In short, the latest remake was crap.

Hai, Magnonx-San. So glad that you brought this up: Wow, what a terrible finale. And, they changed both history and the novel yet again, and had John Blackthorne, in a future scene where he is old, speaking to his grandchildren, and he has his Japanese swords from Japan. In the novel, Anjin-San never left Japan, but rather, enjoyed it. And, William Adams also never left Japan, but he had a mansion, given to him by Lord Toranaga. Anyhow, I guess we were right from the beginning with Shogun 2024. Domo for breaching this topic, Magnonx-San. Arigato Gozaimashita.

@@theshogunchannel I think that scene was a possibility not a flash forward. Of what blackthorne might go through if he were to return. But besides that yeah, this is one of the worst finales iv ever seen, sadly to a show that started out really well. The first episode was truly amazing.

Saw Episode 10 of the 2024 travesty, it had some good moments, and several bad ones.
    1. Mariko's funeral is glossed over.
    2. The character of Alvito is so underwhelming, in all the scenes he appeared in this version.
    3. Toranaga and Yabu seemed to be more friendly in this version, not really understanding why. In the novel, Yabu was to Toranaga an ally of convenience at best and a puppet at worst.
4.Yabu's death poem, his gifting Blackthorne the swords gifted by Toranaga, his arrogant yet humorous personalty. (Yabu's death poem in the 2024 version which Omi reads aloud are the words that Mama-san, Kiku's owner, tells Mariko about what can be done with her corpse.)
    5. Blackthorne's (2024 version) dumb looking expression in almost every scene.
    6. Mariko's letter to Blackthorne telling him he can build another ship is missing.
    7. The vision or scenery of the Battle of Sekigahara is very cheap looking CGI. It's just over stylized footage of Toranaga and Ishido on horseback, each with a few retainers, and everything else in the background is blurred out CGI.

    • @theshogunchannel
      @theshogunchannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hai, ALwinDigital-San. Excellent Comments:
      1. Episode 10: Mariko's funeral was not featured at all, except for Blackthorne and Fujiko pouring her ashes in a Canadian lake, because of a 'Sailor's Custom'.
      2. Agreed: Alvito 2024 was less than an afterthought in this, and his character so very whimpy compared to the cunning intellect and prowess of Alvito 1980 (Damien Thomas).
      3. Agreed: Hai, Hiromatsu wanted to kill Yabu almost at the beginning of the novel, because of Yabu's treachery, but Toranaga used Yabu as a tool, until he was finished with him, allowing Yabu's Seppuku, because he chose to obey Ishido. Toranaga always knew that he couldn't trust Yabu. Hai, Toranaga 2024 and Yabu 2024 are more like old buddies, before Toranaga seconds Yabu.
      4. Hai, the comparison of Yabu 1980 Seppuku with Yabu 2024 Seppuku will be fun. Will have to do a Side By Side Shogun Showdown on that as well. Frankie Sakai will always be Lord Kasigi Yabu for me.
      5. Hai, did the Directors tell him to make that expression, or was that Cosmo Jarvis' idea? People have said that he looks like a buffoon, useless, expressionless... No offense personally, Cosmo. It would have been incredibly difficult for anyone to succeed Richard Chamberlain as Anjin-San.
      6. Hai, they completely took out the letter scene, as Blackthorne 2024 and Mariko 2024 have really no romantic relationship, but something more of a business relationship, with one side encounter between them. When Jarvis yelled, as he held Mariko 2024 in his hands, it seemed so "acted" and so unreal.
      7. Hai, So glad that you brought this up: That did look like 'cheap' CGI, and obviously they used Green Screens, and then, added the CGI backgrounds, with the CGI Samurai again. I'm actually surprised that they didn't extend the ending, with almost an entire episode, with CGI, recreating The Battle Of Sekigahara, but, they didn't. I will have to do a Shogun Showdown on the Battle Of Sekigahara Side By Side, because, Shogun 2024 was very short: 30 seconds. This was probably the one area where Shogun 2024 could have shined, since it was more of a Political-Historical-Action miniseries. They could have had long, intense CGI scenes, for all of their video game viewers, but for some reason, they cut it to just 30 seconds. Very anti-climatic ending: Blackthorne enlists the village's help, along with Buntaro, to pull his ship's hull closer to shore. Toranaga looks at the sky. (End Miniseries).
Again, you have highly excellent comments, with wonderful insight. Now, God willing, I will have the appropriate time to make all of these Shogun Showdowns. Arigato Gozaimashita.

What a great scene. I love everything about this version. The 2024 Shogun is so flat and 2 dimensional. They changed the story so much and destroyed so much of what made the Novel such a masterpiece. It ruined Blackthorne and Rodriguez. Yahu died so pitiful in the 24 version. Omi the crybaby Samurai was ridiculous. So tired of woke politics. I won't be getting the DVD or watching anymore of the 24 version. I really missed Toronaga and Blackthorne's friendship. I don't understand why these movie makers would take that away.

@@theshogunchannel I see. But was talking about Anjin-san saving the life by commanding the boat. In the end, the japanese capitain mentally thanks Blackthorne for saving, I think, Yabu's life during the storm, by avoiding a sinking. Blackthorne gives the japanese a new authority over the ship's crew(I think the former capitain was dragged to the sea).
