Update: i deleted me Goodreads and now have no social media at all. It is euphoric. And my new years resolution is to stop watching youtube, unfortunately. I have no problem with youtubers who privide videos of substance, like you. In fact, if you guys were all that was on this platform i would stick around. There are a few good cookies, like you, that giy who posts about studying for a PhD (wait there are two of those, one of them is British), and i particularly like Tara Brabazons lectures on information literacy. Unfortunately, i think the new media experiment has failed. Just look at the results of the election, other recent events. But my pessimism about the internet began long before. Sadly, i feel like the system is broken. The truth is impossible to find, almost, and lies go viral. The world is getting dumber. i feel like the only answer for intelligent people is to get off of social media, and unfortunately for me that includes TH-cam. I do not think the system is fixable at this point. And like the elves of the lord of the rings, im leaving for a new story. There is no longer any point in doing book reviews in a world where there is no such thing as truth and everything is subjective. Another thing i am giving up is counting and writing down the books i read every year. I dont have a problem with tracking your reading in and of itself. But it is just getting rid of the toxic idea that your reading has to be justified. How dare you re-read your mineralogy textbook! Or how dare you read Lord of the Rings! Dont you know there is injustice in the world? It is this toxic need to make your reading public and "useful" that i long to get rid of. Anyway. You have been a huge influence on my decisions to leave social media and Goodreads. Thank you! Long live Slow Reading!

Well now I really want to reread lonesome dove. But like you, lord of the rings is on my tbr-bd (before death). I’m like you I can really only read one book at a time, and I took on reading a lot of books this year, so next year I’m going to intentionally slow down and read less books but engage with the material more. Also, getting through Stephen king’s published books chronologically is a life goal

I have really enjoyed your videos, the quiet and thoughtful pace of them. I too am reading the Wheel of Time as we speak, in Book 9 right now. It is a wonderful journey. I am really enjoying the leisurely pace, and the vast expansive world building, and the characters are very strong. Egwene is perhaps my favorite, but there are many others. By the way, have you ever read some of the 19th century classic novels? To be specfic, I think George Eliot (Middlemarch), and Leo Tolstoy (especially Anna Karenina, but also War and Peace) are great, great books. They are also “epic” in their own way: quite long books, yes, but also very intimate, lyrical, and full of some of my very favorite characters. If you like Name of the Wind from how you’ve described it, I think you’d really be in for a treat. These books, along with the Epic Fantasies Wheel of Time and Lord of the Rings (need to also read the Silmarillion if you like Lord of the Rings), are some of my favorites, of all books I’ve read. I think then the Epic fantasies of today are great for their amazing scale and imagination, and their p characters too. And then, these 19th century books are also epic and expansive, but also lyrical, with great characters, even if they are set in “the real world”. Anyway, enjoying your channel. Daniel in Tokyo.

This was awesome to read this morning! Thank you! So happy to chat with someone else who is deep into Wheel of Time. Many say books 7-10 are a "slog" yet I fully disagree. Those are some of my favorite books. They made me appreciate the slow natural moments. Nearly done with book 12...just you wait. WOW. Thank you for sharing your suggestions! Lord of the Rings is definitely on my list!

    • @danielmorris6675

@@Thomas.R.Howell Yes, thanks for this. I will be starting Book 10 in a few weeks, in January of the new year. Very much looking forward to it. I also disagree with "the slog" mentality. The books are good! In fact, Path of Daggers is actually probably my number 3, and maybe I am completely a minority view for that one (Lord of Chaos is my favorite, then Shadow Rising). Yes, maybe Crown of Swords and Winter's Heart were not the very best WoT books, but I didn't see any major dip in quality. I know Book 10 will be slow, but that is fine. I actually like Elayne a lot, so spending time with those chapters will be no problem. And yes, looking forward to Books 11-14, yes! Lord of the Rings-Silmarillion are just some of my very favorites books too. I wouldn't say Tolkien is "slower" than Jordan, but his world is just as deep as Wheel. His backhistory-lore is absolutely incredible, maybe in a class by himself (it feels so organically integrated. You will need to read the Silmarillion after Lord of the Rings to get all the lore connections). I mean, he spent 50 years, on and off, developing these books, his world, and it shows! His writing (prose style) I think is better though than Jordan, more archaic, more contemplative. Jordan to me is "fine" in terms of prose, although he is writing 40 years later than Tolkien, so his readership is more modern as well.. But anyway, I think both series are truly great classics in epic fantasy, and if you ever read Lord of the Rings-Silmarillion, if you make a video comparing Tolkien to Jordan (how they each affected you, their differences or similarities in world building, and prose style), would love to see one in the future. But take your time! Take care, Daniel

I've been reading for over 50 years...since I was around 3 years old. After that amount of time you definitely have favorites, although I'd be hard pressed to say, "These ten." Favorites, however, are: Lord of the Rings (Tolkien; read before the movie existed) Dune (Frank Herbert; didn't read before Lynch's movie, but way before the Syfy show and the new movie) 2001 (Arthur C. Clarke) The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald) Lord of the Flies (Golding) A Prayer For Owen Meany (John Irving; read any of his books!) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Douglas Adams) Neuromancer (William Gibson) Jurassic Park (Crichton; it was unbelievable to read this before the movie existed!) A Game of Thrones (Martin; all of Ice and Fire are good, but the first is the king) To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee) Watership Down (Richard Adams) Rebecca (Daphne De Maurier) The Grapes of Wrath (Steinbeck) anything by Jane Austen ...and so many more. I'm leaving out tons that should be read! Suggestion: don't limit yourself to fantasy. There is a world of truly great literature out there that you will be missing out on by sticking to it. Expand and enjoy!

I seriously love your comments! This is awesome. Absolutely love your advice. Thankfully I don't ever plan on limiting myself to fantasy. Especially since a lot of fantasy (modern fantasy) is very surface level. Reading Stephen King has opened me up to other genres. So I am really excited to read other books once I am done with Wheel of time. Which has taken up the last 2 years. I of course am not saying it has been a chore. It has been a wonderful journey and I am excited but also very sad to see the end. Really don't know what I will read next. Or what I will be up for. But nonetheless really excited to dive into other stories that are not fantasy! Thank you so much for sharing!

@@Thomas.R.Howell Oh yeah I've read some King as well. Standouts in my head are The Stand, for example (because it was long, but decent) and It (which was great for 90% of it, but the end made me throw the book across the room). I would consider everything on my list to be "literature" with the possible exception of Jurassic Park and Thrones (but I could probably make a good argument that they are literature). I just finished A Way of Kings, and it is absolutely NOT literature. This is fine (it has a ton of flaws, but I still enjoyed it), but to have any hopes of being on my "fav" list, it has to approach saying meaningful things about the human experience, preferably in a way I consider to be artistic (use of imagery, metaphors, etc). And I'm not stating that Kings doesn't say anything, but I'd be hard pressed to accept that it's MEANINGFUL. Edit: I forgot One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and A Clockwork Orange. Def. on my fav list. Such good books...

Im not usually one to comment or recommend on TH-cam but based on your love of characters, video games, storytelling, and music I would love to recommend the game The Artful Escape. It was developed by Annapurna Studios and was one of the most pleasant games I've ever played. It is a relatively short game, about 4-5 hours, but it really resonated with me. Ive put a brief summary below if anyone wants to check it out. The Artful Escape is a visually stunning and deeply imaginative narrative adventure that follows Francis Vendetti, a young musician struggling to step out of the shadow of his legendary folk-singer uncle. On the eve of his first performance, Francis embarks on an interdimensional journey of self-discovery, crafting his own identity as a cosmic rock star. The game blends platforming and rhythm-based mechanics with dazzling psychedelic visuals and a heartfelt story about creativity, individuality, and the power of music. Featuring a quirky cast of characters and a fantastic soundtrack, The Artful Escape is perfect for anyone who loves vibrant worlds, storytelling, and exploring the limitless boundaries of self-expression.
