I loved Pet Sematary! While not a typical jump-scare type of horror, the psychological horror exploring death and grief is proufoundly unsettling. I completely agree with you about the believable characters and well paced intriguing aspects of the story. I hope you enjoy Salem’s Lot!

YES! I'm 60 pages into Salem's Lot and already just feel creeped out. I love how King's books make you feel differently. Or different variations of horror. Misery I felt more cringe and uncomfortable. Pet Sematary I felt more sad and depressed, and unsettled. Now with Salem's Lot I feel actually creeped out and scared. Haunted houses are awesome.

Thomas, I found your channel a few days ago, and binged every single one of your videos, (besides the Wheel of Time update which features spoilers.) I absolutely love your channel's vibe compared to every other BookTube channel I've discovered. You're calm, no crazy edits, and you're just a genuine guy. I wouldn't have ever called myself a reader, but recently, my girlfriend had recommended I read Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. I'm over 200 pages in and I've only had the book for a week. To go from never wanting to read, especially avoiding assigned books in school... To being just about finished with my first novel in many years... I owe it to your videos. I'm very excited to watch all your future videos. I just picked up Game of Thrones, as I am currently watching that with a friend (I'm on season 2). I think I'll stick with fantasy/sci-fi for the future. I'm glad to join this journey of reading.

I was planning to start Salem’s Lot upon finishing Tender is the Flesh, but after I finished it I felt like having read 2 books back to back that were sad/dark/disturbing I needed a palate-cleanser first - so I started reading Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. The Color of Magic is just what I needed mood-wise - an absurdist fantasy story that makes me laugh. Salem’s Lot is on-deck though.

I vividly remember reading Pet Sematary a couple of years ago, and it was my first Stephen King. I love watching horror movies and all the spooky feels, but I was a bit sceptical about trying horror books, as in I wasn't sure if it would be scary at all. I read the book over a rainy week, and I was definitely spooked by it, a bit. Then one night I was telling my sister about this book and how good it was, and I started narrating it to her. While narrating the events of that book, I felt really uncomfortable and even shivered a little. I told her that I'll continue the rest next morning. So that was my experience with Pet Sematary, I realised how scary that book was while narrating it than when I was reading it.

I am also not really a huge fan of rating books out of 5, or any number for that matter. It kind of feels like a really simple sum up of what someone thought about a book, which can be good! But I would much rather hear the full thoughts than just seeing “4.5/5”

    cozy review.
the first S.King i read was the Stand and then to the Dark Tower and The Regulators. i was impressed how he melds styles and yes, pacing and characterization. have you read Sutter Kane? remember that from In the Mouth of Madness? none of these were relatable until i read Hearts in Atlantis. i think it contains the first inklings of the Dark Tower. i grew up in its milieu, or slightly after and played lots of Hearts in my time, along with the inversion, Spades. i missed the Vietnam draft by one month in '75 so i was engrossed.
i'm still finishing up Simmons' dystopian Flashback due to a lot a chores and great weather here.
i found 2 for the TBR at the thrift: A Hole in Texas, speculative fiction, almost Sci-fi by Herman Wouk, a new author for me, and Exhalation by Ted Chiang, a collection of stories. stoked to get into both of those.

Pet Sematary is probably King's darkest book. He's written all kinds of horror, but there's something so dismal and hopeless about this one that stands out. Most of his other books usually portray the triumph of good over evil. But not this one. It goes to show that King himself was reluctant to publish this one. In his words, he had "gone too far."
    "Sometimes, dead is better." Chills.
I'm currently making my way through Salem's Lot. It's an especially fascinating read having the wider context of King's career and life as a whole. The way he builds small towns is so haunting yet beautiful in a way. His older books also have a charm that can only be captured in the time they were written. Its a window into the 70s, in a way, yet it doesn't feel dated at all. King books generally age like fine wine.
Another thing. Have you ever considered reading his Dark Tower series?

I have absolutely considered reading the dark tower series. But right now I am going to dive back into Wheel of Time and once I am through with that I plan on reading stand alone books and maybe a trilogy here and there.

@@unpretentious_book_talk Oh i think I read this scene yesterday....it was disturbing but I think it gave the trash can man a little more deptht. But maybe the end changes my mind here....for me the book seems to have no lenghts since there are so many characters you follow that the moment it starts to drag a little the scene switches to another location or character which makes it a quick read for me....even thou the book has 1300+ pages or so XD

Pet Cemetery is definitely over rated. I am a parent of 4 kids and I still don’t get the hype. I too was expecting more from this book…all over TH-cam everyone was saying how scary it was…to me as you have said, it was a cozy read period.

I wouldn’t say it’s overrated but I do think it wasn’t as scary as some people made it out to be

@@Thomas.R.Howell I thought both Pet Cemetery and Salem’s Lot were both over rated
