Favorite line in this book: “Some people thought scars a sign of toughness. It seemed to Perrin that fewer scars meant that you knew what you were doing.”
My favorite quote in the entire series: “Women who could channel yet they seemed to follow Rand; they seemed to follow Rand yet they were women who could channel.”
Mines from book 7, Nyeaneve* and Elyane are waking matt up after a night of drink, " I WILL NOT SHOUT AT YOU" Nyeaneve shouted. I feel like it encapsulates her character. Trying to swallow her pride and apologize and Matt pissing them off saying it's not needed, causing Elyane to nearly attack him.
@@alpacka18CLASSIC MOMENT WHEN READING THAT PART! For me it was Mat at the end of the series catching a badger in a bag reminding us where his story arch first started in the first book a reminiscing.
The books timeframe is two years. 20 years to write. Years and years and years waiting for these books. Then you have to reread at one point to remember stuff. You can now just BINGE READ them all or BINGE LISTEN to the audiobooks. My eyesight got bad and I switched to them and I truly LOVE THE AUDIOBOOKS. If you loved reading them then try to listen to them the next time. It goes by fast since you can wear earbuds and do things like Cleaning the house/cooking/driving in a car/ rinding in an airplane ✈️. Trust me you will enjoy the original audiobooks or the new ones done by Rosamond Pike herself (Moraine). The best part of the audiobooks is that they go by faster and you can relisten to them and get a better handle on such a HUGE WORLD that Jordan & Sanderson created.
Enjoyed this video, and I love that you emphasize the pacing of growth. That is so key to why these books are beloved. You sit with these characters. Walk with them. Grow with them. See them change and change and stay the same and change. And you see their changes feom each others flawed viewpoints as well, never knowing which narrator to trust when analyzing a vharacter like Rand because each person has their own flawed view of him. And you have to parse through all the flawed perspectives to winnow out the truth. I dont know if youve finished the series by now, but as of when you posted this, THINGS ARE ABOUT TO GET GOOD! The last three books, especially the very last, are so cathartic, so beautiful, and ao emotionaly rewarding hat instruggle to think of a reading experience that compares.
I am currently on the home stretch! I am 150 pages into book 12. The Gathering Storm. SO GOOD. I fully agree with you on what makes this series so special. Probably the most special. If it were a book shorter I just don't think it would be as impactful. I have fully trusted Jordan throughout every book. There is a reason for it being 14 books (+1 novella). It is a journey well worth experiencing! I did make another video on my wheel of time journey. It was after I finished book 11. Give that a watch if you haven't already! Many new thoughts in that video!
@@Thomas.R.Howell I'll check it out. I have a lot of issues with the style of writing of the series. I vascillate back and forth with hating certain elements and loving others. And yet.... It's a 14 book series that I've gone back and reread entirely with a final book that's made me cry both times. Sooo... Clearly he was doing a lot right as well. I think Rand is my favorite fantasy protagonist, largely because of how ambiguous Jordan is about who he actually he is, letting the reader make their own calls based on unreliable narrators and largely because of the sheer weight of guilt and experience and physical pain Rand winds up carrying after so long a series. I hope you enjoy the finale you're moving into now.
👏 👏 👏 👏 I’m truly excited whenever I see hear someone gushing about this series as they experience it for the first time. I have gifted The Eye of The World to at least a half dozen friends and family members and none have finished it - most never even started it. This is what got me into fantasy over 20 years ago, and I love it - warts and all.
LOVE THAT! It's hard for me to ever recommend the series to anyone. It's just not for everyone. Plus in this modern day, society doesn't have the patience for a 14 book series. Let alone 14 books that have immense depth and detail.
Nynaeve tugging her braid serves multiple different purposes over the course of the series. Initially since she is young for a Wisdom and looks even younger she's learned to use it to emphasize that she's an adult, since brading your hair is a sign of adulthood for women in the Two Rivers. It has become her anger response, which when she learns she needs to be angry in order to channel means that she starts tugging at it as a means to try and summon that anger. It effectively becomes ritualistic for her. As she comes to terms with herself as an Aes Sedai she eventually lessens her tugging of the braid, as she's more secure in herself. But that's a journey of more than half the series, so people catch on that it happens a lot when she's trying to learn to channel and then become overly conscious of it later on, exaggerating the frequency. She tugs her braid 8 times in the final 5 books Jordan wrote and 7 times in Sanderson's 3 books.
I like some of the repetitive descriptions because it can sometimes lead to moments where we recognize someone that was perhaps mysterious first when we see them again from a different POV perhaps "Ah! It's them again!"
So glad you’re enjoying your first read-through. Really looking forward to seeing what you think as you conclude the series. If you still love it, please consider a re-read some time. This is the one of the most re-readable fantasy series out there. The foreshadowing is legit, and seeing the characters again at the beginning of their arcs is eye-opening.
I can’t wait!! You have no idea! I’m taking a break reading a couple Stephen king classics for the Halloween season but after that I’ll be diving back with book 12! Even during my first read of these books I’ve already planned on doing a re-read in the future. To pick up on all the nuggets of foreshadowing. Plus I love book 1. It’s so cozy. It’s the beginning of an adventure.
I recently completed the series. I listened to it... it went too quickly and there are things I missed. I'll READ them this time to allow everything to settle in!
YES! love it! I feel like Wheel of Time will be so rewarding on a reread. And when reading vs listening I feel you’ll be able to metabolize the MANY details in Jordan’s writing! So excited for you to enjoy the journey again! I’m currently on book 12! I’m sad I’ve only got 3 books left. Never want this journey to end.
I love wheel of time! I'm about at the same place as you in the story, (I've read the first 10 books) I agree with what you said about Robert Jordan's writing style and especially the repeated descriptions (Braid tugging and skirt smoothing!). But the good parts make it so worth reading. The storylines and the character arcs are beautiful and even the writing style can be beautiful at times as well. From what I've read in fantasy I haven't found a world (except maybe Lord of the Rings) as rich, detailed and nostalgic as Wheel of Time.
Let’s goooo I love meeting another fan of the series! It really feels like such a niche series because it’s so dang long. I truly believe there is just so much more to love than hate or be annoyed with in this series. And what an amazing point. Nostalgic! I don’t know why but I really feel nostalgic when I read this. Maybe because it feels so dang new compared to modern fantasy just rehashing so many tropes with surface level worldbuilding. Wheel of Time makes me feel like a kid again. How far are you now? I did an update a month ago. I’m finished with book 11. I’ve got the last 3 Sanderson books!
@@Thomas.R.Howell I'm at Knife of Dreams right now, so I still have five books to read, plus New Spring. I'm planning to pick the series up again soon, probably in January and just read Wheel of Time until I finish it. I want to re-read some of the core moments in the series and a few of the early books. Wheel of time has so much nostalgia, I feel like the adventure and the relatability of the characters makes it feel like your a kid making up a story in your head. I don't know if that makes sense lol, but it's so good. Really immersive and emotional.
Knife of Dreams was amazing! Yeah I’ve taken a break since finishing book 11. I’m really enjoying this break but I also miss WoT deeply. After another book or so I might dive back into WoT but I might not. I don’t know yet. I’m taking my time with it and I for sure don’t want to rush it. Because I know once I start book 12, I’ll rip through the last 2… then it’s over 😭 Maybe I’m afraid of the inevitable. Hence why I’ve yet to finish playing through the Witcher 3. Such a massive game. A masterpiece yet I never want it to end haha
So I’ve read the wheel of time multiple times and it is still my favorite series. It captured me just like it seems to be capturing you. The best part about reading it now is that there’s no multi-years wait between books. The “slog” that people talk about, while there to some degree, is much more tolerable, and actually enjoyable, when not compounded by that long wait between books. I will say the pacing does pick up in Knife of Dreams and does not stop until you get to that final page of the series. Sanderson does a great job with the final book, which was split into a trilogy. It’s an amazing and satisfying ending to the series. Enjoy.
That is awesome. I absolutely plan on doing a reread later on in my life! I couldn’t imagine waiting between books and then with Jordan passing, just feeling unfinished. So happy Sanderson picked it up and drove it to the finish line. I actually did an updated video on my wheel of time journey so far. I finished book 11! Check that video out. I have my thoughts a little more fleshed out. Thank you for the encouragement and hyping up the rest of the series! Super excited to finish it yet kind of sad because I don’t want it to end

Might I recommend my FAVORITE book of all time...Name of the Wind? :)
@@Thomas.R.Howell Well what is considered the main series is done, but more novels are being written in the world. Sequels and prequels to the series, etc.
I have high hopes for The Wheel of Time. I'm sure it'll take time to read the whole series as I'll definitely be taking breaks to read something else in-between, but it sounds like my kind of jam ;)
Love that! People who has seen me read this at a coffee shop stop me and say, it’s long but it’s worth it! I’m currently on book 11 and it’s is truly one of the greatest reading experiences I’ve ever had. And that is very important for you to take breaks in between! You never want reading or a certain series to become a chore. So keep those pallet cleansers close by! Excited for you to begin this series! There is truly nothing else like it.
@@Thomas.R.Howell wow, what a recommendation! I'm very excited to read it. I took a peak inside the book when I bought it, just a couple of pages to get a sense of the writing style and I enjoyed it immediately. It gives a great sense of the environment of the place and the relations and dynamics between the chatacters, and that’s just the surface level. Solid writing.
Keep me updated along your journey! I’ll be making videos about wheel of time in the future as I’ll do my best to keep them spoiler free! I’m thankful I knew NOTHING going into it and still don’t know a single thing about the rest of the series. So I’ve been experiencing it without any foreknowledge. That’s really made this series so immersive and mysterious.
It's funny. The dislikes you have about names and descriptive writing is the exact problem I had with the Lord of the Rings and much much later, the Stormlight Archive. I've noticed that about High Fantasy multiple book series in general. ( I mean, honestly, Tolkien describing Merry and Pippens journey into Fangorn Forest in the Two Towers was a bit much for me. If you know, you know.) I DID find that about Wheel of Time as well in some parts but those parts have nothing on Tolkien. I actually had to look up what a 'barrow downs' was n so forth. I have since re-read WoT multiple times and each time I read, I'm a little older, a little wiser, and little more world weary. So, my thoughts and feelings about which books I find interesting and which ones I feel are a little long winded...change. Every single time. Because I'm a different person each time I come back to it. With books, this kind of phenomenon enhances the experience. With Movies, repeat viewings water down your experience with a story. I'm glad I'm more of a reader than a film watcher. I haven't been to the movies in almost a decade. I don't even really watch them at home. Surprisingly, after books, I find the long form story telling of Anime to be very entertaining. Movies and TV shows made in the west are a very very far 3rd place. Anyways, glad you have to like the series. Robert Jordan has cemented his place in High Fantasy storytelling. I only wish the Shannara anthology( over 30 books?) was as widely loved and recognized as those.
I am now more than half way through book 12 and I really think Wheel of Time is unlike anything out there. Sure a lot of people will say Lord of the Rings is king. But 3 books isn't enough for me. I want more. I want to get lost in this world and live in it as long as I can. I want to roll dice in a tavern with Mat. I want to set up camp with Lan. Or just listen to the deceptive and manipulation between the various Ajahs. I can't wait to see this to the end. But at the same time I am frightened. I absolutely plan on rereading WoT down the line.
Where can I buy the books for a low price? (I'm broke) I badly want to read the books 🥺 I've watched the tv series and I'm not yet satisfied specially now I know there's a book series, so please if someone knew a where to buy the books below $15 it would help me a lot ❤❤
Wow thank you so much! So happy you found your way here! I absolutely will read the prequel but most likely when I’ve finished the full series. When I begin missing the world and characters I’ll use the prequel as a way to revisit the story! By the way I made a video on my updated WoT journey up to book 11!
I tried to get into these books. I forced myself through the foirst five and gave up. I hated every character in the books. Every one. I just couldn't stand them.

That's okay! It's not for everyone. That's why I think you'd love Name of the Wind. It's one character. And his story. So beautifully written. So tender. So intimate.
I don't get it. Why make a video on book 10? it's only 4 more books. Couldn't you just finish the damn thing and present your thoughts on the whole series? Alternatively you could have made a "middle of the series" video around book 6-7. But randomly starting to express your opinions at book 10... weird. Anyhoo.... you'll miss his quirky writing by the time you get to the Sanderson books. I remember reading gathering storm and seeing the word "trousers." I got immediately depressed. Robert Jordan always says "breeches." It was all downhill from there for me.

Love it! This is for sure a rereadable series. Once I’m done I’ll be doing a reread later on in my life
Great video!! Keep it up!👍🏼
Malazan would be the longest I've read and considering it's still going, I guess we will just have to wait and see how long it truly is
It's not even finished!? Oh man...
@@Thomas.R.Howell yeah, I'm trying to keep it spoiler free as much as possible. Looking forward to your videos. Enjoy your books :)

Just found your channel and really enjoy the content! Are you planning to read the prequel to the series?
Wow thank you so much! So happy you found your way here!
I absolutely will read the prequel but most likely when I’ve finished the full series. When I begin missing the world and characters I’ll use the prequel as a way to revisit the story!
By the way I made a video on my updated WoT journey up to book 11!
I'm intimidated by the number of characters
I tried to get into these books. I forced myself through the foirst five and gave up. I hated every character in the books. Every one. I just couldn't stand them.
You are not the first to say this... It's not for everybody and you are not obligated to finish a series you don't like! What are some of your favorite books?
Amen!
Got done with the first four, started the fifth-and realized I was torturing myself.
I tried man, I really tried.
@@adamcroft3705 It's not for everyone! It's very empowering to stop mid series or even mid book. Go read what excites you! Read what you want to read! That is the beauty of books.
What book are you reading now? What is one of your favorite books?
@@Thomas.R.Howell very true! I’m reading the lions of Al-Rassan by guy gavriel Kay
And The Condor Warrior trilogy by Jin Yong.
What edition are you reading?
The ugly amazon prime logo edition lolol
@@Thomas.R.Howell sorry if I asked twice I thought maybe you wouldn’t answer on an old video…
@@vaitranquilloarmadillo9774 I liked that persistence. You can ask it again on an older video and I will answer it again just for you!
Have you read Wheel of Time or are looking into it??
@ very kind of you 😂 by the way.. talking about books I just finished the misborn trilogy and it was my first time riding fantasy. I loved it especially the first book. The other two I liked them a lot but found them a little bit slow maybe because it took me longer to read them. The first book I read it on holyday on the beach of Sardegna Italy in a week. The other I wasn’t consistent maybe that is the factor that made the impression that they were “slow”. I just ordered Lomesome Dove after readin Desd man’s walk can’t wait! Greetings frim Switzerland
Every horse has a name! Gosh, why not give every chicken, cat, dog, and mouse a name? I'll read the first installment.
It's so hard for me to recommend books because I really need to know what that person is interested in. Then there is Wheel of Time... I won't recommend it to everyone there are only a few I would. Only because of how massive of a series it is. What are some of your favorite books or series?
That's cool.Reading book 12,2 years later😂
I did an updated video on my WoT journey a couple weeks ago! Im on book 12! I'll be resuming my journey after I read a few scary books for Halloween.
@@Thomas.R.Howell Sounds great,im reading Jay Kristoff atm which I recommend since u like Rothfuss and than I will finish the Wheel of time series ! :)
@@noname3609 What book do you recommend from Kristoff?
@@Thomas.R.Howell Empire of the vampire series
Did you just call New Spring a novella? This is your brain on Wheel of Time
Any book is a novella outside of Wheel of Time 😂
@@Thomas.R.Howell True lol. War and Peace? Les Mis? Chump change
Book 11 slaps, makes up for the slog of 7-10
I finished book 11 a month ago... it was AMAZING
Would you like to buy back your soul?
I was going to subscribe until you said get a cup of coffee...sorry, tea is where it's at. (j/k I still subscribed, lol)
haha! I love a good cup of tea but coffee is my jam! Thank you so much!
I may not enjoy it then,
Because that’s one of the things that I can’t deal with in GOT books.
Too many names, and too many characters that I don’t care about.
That's okay! It's not for everyone. That's why I think you'd love Name of the Wind. It's one character. And his story. So beautifully written. So tender. So intimate.
Most of those 2000 plus characters are named Sean, each one with a different spelling.
don't get me started hahaha
My uncle and I have a nick name for one character its: "szechuan sauce" from Rick and Morty lol
The worst covers ever :(
What makes them the worst are the giant Amazon circles on the cover 😭
I don't get it. Why make a video on book 10? it's only 4 more books. Couldn't you just finish the damn thing and present your thoughts on the whole series? Alternatively you could have made a "middle of the series" video around book 6-7. But randomly starting to express your opinions at book 10... weird. Anyhoo.... you'll miss his quirky writing by the time you get to the Sanderson books. I remember reading gathering storm and seeing the word "trousers." I got immediately depressed. Robert Jordan always says "breeches." It was all downhill from there for me.
I started this channel when I was done with book 9. So I didn’t really have a chance to share fresh thoughts mid way through the series. But I still wanted to share my thoughts anyways.
I Made another video that’s my thoughts so far after finishing book 11.
I’ve taken a break to read others books so I’ll be diving into the last three soon.
Also I’m pretty new to TH-cam so I’m still trying to get my footing right
I appreciate your thoughts and criticisms! I will for sure being doing a post wheel of time extravaganza once I finish the series
