Hi Byron, I'm an entry level Drafter working with people who do roadworks projects - and I've recently started this job. I really like how modern and professional your videos are and they're very enjoyable to watch. Could you please make a video/videos on all the stages involved in transport/traffic engineering (going into each step in depth would be handy, furthermore how the team works together (and what type of people are involved) to finish a project and show them to clients (- I understand this varies by company, but even something kind of general would be good)
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to think about this one. It's a broad topic and projects can vary a lot. But some general explanations could be possible.
Thank you 🙏
can we attain any of these without a degree?
Yes, they can be attained without a degree. For example, in California, it is possible to get an EIT and PE without a degree/college experience. States can be different with requirements so it is good to check with the state that you are interested in. PTOE and RSP can also be attained without a degree. When you don't have a degree you most likely will need more years of engineering-related experience.
I just graduated recently in high school and my college degree be a bachelor of science in civil engineering
Great choice!
Dang I start my civil engineering class next semester
Good luck! Put your best foot forward but also understand that perfection is not possible and learning from mistakes is often necessary.
Hi Byron, I got a bachelor's in computer science, but i realize i get very excited about transportation and city planning. Given your experience, is there any route you'd recommend for me to get into the transportation engineer industry for someone with a bachelor's in computer science? Is it feasible if I don't have internships or specific engineering coursework? Thank you
Hi, from what I’ve seen, it would be very challenging to become a licensed engineer. Not trying to discourage you, but I have not seen anyone do it. The main reason is the licensing process to get an EIT and eventually a PE will be a lot. You will need to do a lot of self-studying on complex subjects you haven’t learned yet. One possibility is that you could potentially work in the industry without ever getting a license. An example is using your computer science background to develop intelligent transportation systems or work with developing software for traffic signal-type applications. There are probably other avenues that don’t require an engineering license, but what I am getting at is not everyone in the industry is a licensed engineer. If you are ok with that, then it could be more feasible.
We need more videos from you
I want to pursue a career in building and construction civil engineering, but I'm unsure about career paths, opportunities, income, and growth. Can someone offer guidance and insights to help me make an informed decision? Many thanks
But is it cheaper or about the same if paying with cash?
Um wrong… as long as the AWS are placed at the correct distance there’s no need to push back a taper because of a turn if the taper has the necessary spacing as well as the buffer space it’s all good. if you’re riding in a road with construction signs around that automatically should let you know to slow down. And in your video that center divider doesn’t have enough space to set up fabrics indicating the lane closure ahead. That’s the reason tapers and buffer zones were invited for drivers like you guys or maybe the idiot that decided to drive into the taper and almost cause a pile up .
The better Rewards card for Chevron & Shell & ExxonMobil for gas
VDOT has more traffic signals (red lights) per non-interstate highway mile than any other state in the U.S. Additionally, when VDOT finally separates the grades, it insists on building massive, sprawling Cadillac interchanges when a Ford or Chevy would be adequate and, to add insult to injury, the shitass agency STILL clutters all supporting side roads and streets with traffic signals
Interesting. Traffic signals are expensive to build and maintain.
Yep and there ought to be investigations to determine whether any VA officials are receiving any kickbacks from suppliers.
This is just another piece of the puzzle that contributes to the housing shortage and high cost of housing, and the homeless crisis. We're in a situation where you can't build up and you can't build out.
Hi Byron, I have completed my second year in civil engineering [ India] , it would be helpful if you could suggest some resources to study from and also where to apply for internships
Racism may have effected the construction of fwy etc in 50s.. The question is do we spend millions of todays tax payer money destroying and redoing them just so road ways please everyone's race. If we asked the neighborhoods if they are willing pay more in taxes just to rebuild fwys I am not sure they would like that. Does this mean every time the racial makeup of a neighborhood changes we have to rebuild all the roads to just please them? What is it with the left obsession with race.
How far out from the cross walk is the detector? Or how far is too far where you will no longer be detected?
There is some variation, but a car stopped at the stop line without going over it too much should be more than enough to adequately get detected by the stop bar detector. Some traffic signals have multiple detectors in one lane and can detect further back.
😡😡
hey Byron, I just stared my master's in transportation systems with a civil engineering background. can you please guide me on which tools are currently in the market so i can start learning them.
Hi, there are a lot of tools out there and it is hard to recommend anything without knowing specifics. What do you plan on working/studying in transportation systems?

I am a site engineer from Sydney, living in Cali. I want to get into transportation engineering, but I am unsure where to start. Can you recommend some courses I could take?
Is traffic engineer's job always office based ?
From my experience, most of the time is spent in the office, but you do get chances to be out in the field. It will vary depending on what kind of work you do.
Hi Byron, thanks for such a great video! I work as a transportation planner in a suburban region and this is a great summary of what I've found to be a harder profession to explain to people. I'm wondering though, if you could offer some insight on induced demand and whether or not planning for the widening of roadways is really just an overall waste of time and resources due to this phenomena. It's an issue I've been struggling with in my planning career to date. Thanks so much!
Great question. It's a complex topic. I would say that it is important to understand the overall picture of what is going on in the region before coming to conclusions. There are a lot of questions that come up (or should come up) when roadways are proposed to be widened (or reduced). How will it affect the surrounding transportation network? How will it affect other modes? Will it further divide neighborhoods? Will there be an economic loss if capacity is not increased? Etc. A lot of social media will offer broad brush answers or generalizations but I believe it is better to treat it on a case-by-case basis as these pros and cons will differ for each situation. Being able to clearly communicate the pros and cons to the decision makers is very important for those of us in this profession (at least in the government sector).
@@ByronTangthank you so much for your thorough answer!

Very Very Good Video!
Upside is better than gas buddy. However, 7-11 is the cheapest, most of the time with the app and loyalty membership. Plus, you can preload it and get extra points. I would just download 3 or 4 and load money on it when you need to pay or use your own card.

Very true, even the structural engineer itself has many industries to choose the company work with. I ended up to lower some salary to join the field which matches my interests and expertise for the happier improving and working.

Not enough advanced warning signs. There are signs stands with adjustable clamps to set on CTB walls that can be used when there are no shoulders. And I agree with @skyeseye7736, that closure needed to start way before that curve in order to see the arrow board.

I hear like a thousand things! Make it simple, is Jay Walking legal or not?! Yes or NO ???!!
In California it is technically still illegal, but because there is a law now that you can't get cited unless you jaywalk in an unsafe way, it is de facto legal (if done safely).
@@ByronTang your subject says -" WHY Jaywalking is Now Legal in California!". My original message was clear to make it simple NOT a thousand words! LEGAL or NOT ( yes or NO ). 🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐
quick question: Do you ever use the subjects you learned in College such as Statics, Structural Analysis, Mechanics of Materials, etc . . . . If you do how often, and what is the highest level course you use?
I don't use many courses except for the Transportation-related design & analysis courses. The work I do is fairly specialized, so there is no need to use statics, structural analysis, etc.

Byron, Im majoring in civil engineering at CSUEB in Hayward. I drive past the Hayward city hall building almost everyday, would you recommend working for the city as a civil/ transportation engineer? Thanks
The City of Hayward is a great organization and I would definitely recommend it. If it is a great match for you depends on your goals and preferences. Some people don't like the public sector. I would say working for a city is something worth exploring at least once in your career!
I wish riding a bicycle as a form of commuting was taken seriously in the states. It's cheaper and healthier than owning a car, and I bet a lot of people would choose that option if it was safe and convenient!
I agree. I understand a bike is not realistic for a lot of people and their situations, but if you can swing it, there are a ton of benefits.
Do you have any tips on college for a civil engineering bachelors? Is online a viable choice for college?
Whatever college you decide, make sure it is ABET accredited.
When I was going to college, the online option wasn't really available. I've been away from the college environment for a while now so I couldn't tell you. I'm hoping someone here could share their experience.
@@ricky38251 does it make it harder to get a job in the field if the degree is not from an ABET accredited program?
2:00 well said. Net earnings after cost of living is accounted for means more than gross earnings
what is the difference between transportation engineering and planning?
There are a lot of differences but also some overlap. I do have a video on my channel about that if you want a more detailed answer!
