  • Civil engineering titles for transportation can be confusing. PE, PTOE, EIT, RSP - what do they all mean? How much qualifications does an engineer need to obtain a certification or license? Find out as I delve into the many titles that transportation and traffic engineers can obtain.

    Great video Byron! I just posted a series of videos about studying for the FE to obtain the EIT / EI license

    I've taken (and passed) both of the rsp exams now. The hardest part is finding stuff that counts for continuing edu requirements. The actual tests are not too bad and really just test general understanding and if you can find your way around their approved reference list. Lots of plug and chug and cause/effect questions. If X safety improvement happens, what happens to Y.
    I've also got a suspicion there is a third level or rsp2 domain being created to include the multimodal updates with the hsm2

      I agree, the continuing education requirements can be tough to complete and manage. Considering that all these certificates are starting to have them and even some state PE licenses also require it, completing and tracking it all can become a big effort (in time and money)!

    For example, I am from Europe and after 5 years of college I have a master's degree in traffic engineering. My question is what title will I get if I move to the US.

      These licenses and certifications are separate from degrees. Having a masters is a great plus, but you will still need to take the exams and meet the requirements to obtain any of these if you move to the US.

    What are your thoughts on a traffic engineer receiving ISMA certifcations for Traffic Signal Tech I and II? How helpful would it be?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you really want to know the traffic signal tech side it can be useful. But I rarely see engineers have it. It's mainly because the work responsibilities of an engineer vs. technician are very different. I personally would not consider getting it unless there is an expectation at my job that I would be doing traffic signal technician work.

    I'm planning on taking the TE exam but how did you study for it? There doesn't really seem to be much resources unlike the PE exam.

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a good Berkeley Tech Transfer course that they do once a year that prepares you for the test. I would take that. Other than that, know the reference materials very well. You're right that it's harder to study for than the PE because there aren't many resources out there. That's how I approached it.

    Where can I find more practice problems for the PTOE? Ite only offers a course and one practice test. Should I use the practice transportation problems and tests from the PE exam for additional practice?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is one source to get additional practice. Just make sure that you are practicing problems that fall under the PTOE exam format. I remember using the practice problems from my TE study resources because I recently took the TE exam before going on to take the PTOE.

    Hello! for the TE license, does my experience also need to be certified by a TE? I only have 1 TE in my group and I think the board requires 3 TEs. I was wondering if a PE can do it

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว

      When I took the test a while ago, your experience did not need to be certified by a TE. I believe it is still the same. A PE could certify it as long as the experience did fall under what California defines as traffic engineering experience. It would be a challenge if experience could only be certified by a TE because there are not many around.

    can we attain any of these without a degree?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, they can be attained without a degree. For example, in California, it is possible to get an EIT and PE without a degree/college experience. States can be different with requirements so it is good to check with the state that you are interested in. PTOE and RSP can also be attained without a degree. When you don't have a degree you most likely will need more years of engineering-related experience.
