    Wow! I hope you are enjoying your new job! It would be really awesome if you made a day in the life of a transportation engineer video and also talk about the differences between a civil and transportation engineer! Best wishes ✌🏻

      Thank you! :) I do plan on making another day in the life video in the future although I will probably wait until I am settled in with this current job. Day in the life videos are fun and I definitely want to do another one!

    Hi Byron - I love your blogs. Can you please do one on licensing? PE, TE and PTOE. Thanks a bunch!

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, Hien! I’ll think about this one. It was a while ago since I went through the experience of taking them. I didn’t document much. But I could possibly do an explainer for them.

    Hi Byron, I got a bachelor's in computer science, but i realize i get very excited about transportation and city planning. Given your experience, is there any route you'd recommend for me to get into the transportation engineer industry for someone with a bachelor's in computer science? Is it feasible if I don't have internships or specific engineering coursework? Thank you

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, from what I’ve seen, it would be very challenging to become a licensed engineer. Not trying to discourage you, but I have not seen anyone do it. The main reason is the licensing process to get an EIT and eventually a PE will be a lot. You will need to do a lot of self-studying on complex subjects you haven’t learned yet. One possibility is that you could potentially work in the industry without ever getting a license. An example is using your computer science background to develop intelligent transportation systems or work with developing software for traffic signal-type applications. There are probably other avenues that don’t require an engineering license, but what I am getting at is not everyone in the industry is a licensed engineer. If you are ok with that, then it could be more feasible.

    Congrats. What are the different kinds of traffic problem in urban area? What kind of problems that you might need to solve at your new job? What traffic signal control software you are going to use on your new job?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! There is less new development in urban areas and less right of way to work with. Sometimes you have to be creative with solving problems. I haven’t gotten to use the signal software yet, still early in the job. Maybe in the near future!

    • @thaodangdang374
      @thaodangdang374 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ByronTang what do you mean for “less right of way to work with”? Does it mean that road way, sidewalk and traffic utilization are already in place and as a traffic engineer, the work in the urban area is mostly to modify or make slightly changes?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thaodangdang374 Yes, mostly. The public space available has been already established and mostly built out. It's a lot more costly and difficult to make major changes.

    Hey I'm studying civil engineering and doing my first internship right now. Do you feel that public doesn't allow you to advance as much as being at a private firm would?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the organization. I wouldn't say it is for all public agencies because I know others who have advanced very quickly in the public sector. But, I would agree that there are restrictions in the public sector that could make it harder to advance. In addition, the private sector tends to be more fast-paced and engineers will likely be exposed to a lot more different projects. This does not mean my opinion is that private sector is better than the public sector. There are a lot of pros and cons to each.

    Do you need a degree or any experience for this job ?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, at the minimum a bachelors degree in civil engineering.

    I am a freshly graduated Transportation Engineer, which traffic software should I work on.
    there are a lot of softwares for transportation engineers, which software should i get?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s going to ultimately depend on what you will be working on. It is good to learn some of the basics of the most common software (like AutoCAD), but spending too much time learning a software that you may not even use is a risk. If you don’t know what you will be working on, check the job description of the jobs you will be going for. What software will the jobs be using? Hopefully that will help point you in the right direction.

    Would you recommend starting an engineering job at a private firm or DOT?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends, there are many different private firms and DOTs. If it's a first job, I would recommend an organization that has a good structured environment that has a plan for training newly hired engineers with less experience. Working at a firm could get someone more experience quicker. But I work for a government agency and I have to say there are pros and cons to each.

    Did you need any more than a bachelor’s for transportation engineering? Also, where did you get your degree from? I’m looking into going into transportation engineering in college

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You do not need to have anything more than a bachelor’s in civil engineering to get an entry level transportation engineering job. It is highly recommended to get your EIT because it can be competitive.
