    As a traffic Engineer myself, I second the reasoning! It seems in near future, traffic engineers might need to be adept at data handling and core technology production to be in their top level game.

      I agree! Hopefully universities will also modify curriculum or have elective classes to prepare future traffic/transportation engineers for this new expectation.

    I feel so lucky to have fell into transportation planning/traffic engineering. It’s something I have a lot of passion for and interest in. There’s definitely a lot of room for innovation with big data, ITS, AI, AVs, and EVs. And yes, there’s plenty of government funding. Value of government contracts we’ve picked up recently are wild.

    Hey Byron I have a question: I'm interested in doing Civil/Transportation Engineering because I heard the discipline also encompasses the railroad industry. So I was wondering, do you know if that's true? Like which type of Civil Engineer do you think a railroad company would hire i.e. Transportation vs. a Traffic engineer? I've always loved locomotives and railroads, so I would like to work somewhere in that industry someday... Thanks!

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      More likely a civil or transportation engineer. The railroad industry definitely hires civil engineers. I would not say traffic engineers. Traffic engineers are more specialized and deal with roadway operational issues. Working in a railroad company is its own specialty and most traffic engineers don't have a lot of experience with the general civil engineering skills that railroad companies are looking for. The best way to find out is to look at Railroad Civil Engineering job postings to get an idea of what they expect you to know.

    Hey! Currently in my final year of BSc in Civil Engineering with a major in Transportation and a minor in Structure. I'm at a crossroads, contemplating my choice for higher studies. I'm a quick learner, enjoy problem-solving, I also like creating new stuffs, and have an interest in software. However, I'm torn between these two paths ( Transport and Structure) and feeling a bit stuck. I just want to make the right decision to avoid any regrets. Any advice or insights? (And it feels a bit weird to say this, but ofc, I have to consider the financial aspect too.)
    I don't know if it's just my overthinking or not, but I definitely feel LOST!

      Hi, this is not an easy question to answer and you will never really know until you try both. There are some questions you can ask yourself that may help you decide: (1) If money is not an issue, which one would you choose? (2) If you had to do transportation or structures volunteer work, which would give you more satisfaction and fulfillment that you helped others? (3) Which of the two does learning seem to come more effortlessly and you find yourself in a flow state for long moments of time? (4) See yourself in the future as a prestigious and experienced Transportation or Structural engineer. Which one gives makes you more proud of your future self? (5) Which one do you tend to think about more throughout the day?
      In the end, it may give you comfort to know that many people struggle with this type of question and it is not all over if you don't make the right choice at first. The book Range helped me cope with this fear and has examples of people making the wrong first choice and some come out even stronger because of it.

      Learn as much as you can and try to step out of your comfort zone. And ask a lot of questions :) I am not aware of community websites just for transportation but ITE is an organization that has a lot of discussion and events you can attend, especially if you are in the USA.

    Hello, I’m a softmore in high school and I want to take civil engineering in college. Is there anything I should do now or are getting internships at my age possible? Thank you!

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Some organizations have programs that setup high school internships for a certain period of time. What I would also recommend is to check if there are any advanced classes you can take that could get you college credit, especially for math and science. Those kind of classes were available at my high school.

      Do you like your current job? If you are still in university, you can try different internships. Some organizations may allow you to get different experience or may have a rotation program. Otherwise, you will need to find work (a different job) in the one you are interested in.

    How to get into transportation engineering, which University/institute/courses one should apply for?

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Usually transportation engineering is taught as part of a typical civil engineering degree program. Here in the US, we also have options to take additional classes to learn more about transportation engineering. In my opinion, if you want to get into the industry, getting some experience working as an intern in transportation engineering early is the key thing to have on your resume.

    Kindly:
    1-Could you tell me if the field of Transportation Engineering specially ITS needs programming/coding ?
    2-Can the transportation/traffic engineer work as part time or work remotely ?
    3- If I hold a master degree in ITS from Germany .. Can I work in USA without FE&PE certificates or not ?
    4-Finally .. Could you explain me what is the potential career path for traffic engineer after promotion as job tittles?
    Thanks alot Byron and litterally your content for traffic engineers is the best on all social media platforms .. may god bless you

    • @ByronTang
      @ByronTang  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      1 - I would say it isn't needed (yet), but it definitely helps to have it. I would recommend it if specializing in ITS because so much of ITS touches on analytics, networking, etc. But there is no expectation in the field that a transportation engineer should be able to code at the level of a computer science major.
      2 - Part time work is possible but most people I know work full time. Remote work is also a lot more common these days and transportation and traffic engineers can do a lot of work remotely. I would say I see remote work more available in the private sector.
      3 - You can work at least entry level or in a non-manger position. Without a PE you will probably hit some barriers in progressing/promotion. I would highly recommend going for FE and then PE.
      4 - Not sure I understand the question. Highly depends on organization. In a government department of transportation, there will likely be 1(Junior engineer) 2(Assistant engineer), 3(Associate Engineer), 4(Senior Engineer), 5Principal Engineer), and lastly Director-level positions. Private sector it can be similar but structured and differently named positions more for a private business. There can be positions for highly specialized experts, too.
