I'm a retired engineer who has been playing the guitar and singing since I was 16 years old. Now that my children are grown and I don't have to work quite so much to make a living, I finally have time to make music. I hope you enjoy my modest attempts here. I have been enjoying all the comments coming in from so many new subscribers! Thank you all for taking the time to listen and comment!

Stardust by Hoagy Carmichael and Mitchell Parrish (cover)
This is one of my favorite songs, especially the way it was done by Nat Cole with Gordon Jenkins' wonderful arrangement. I almost always see Stardust sheet music with the song in the key of C, which has many notes that are too high for many singers. Nat Cole did this song in the key of G, so that is where I sang this song also. I used my Eastman archtop for playing this song and I used my Gibson ES-335 for the solo part. I have shown the chords and the lyrics in case other players are interested in how this is played. Thanks for watching! - Glenn

"That Thing You Do" by Adam Schlesinger (cover and tutorial)
มุมมอง 17621 วันที่ผ่านมา
Many listeners will recognize this song from Tom Hanks's movie of the same name played by the fictional group, The Wonders. I really enjoyed diving into this song and realizing what a fantastic job of songwriting Adam Schlesinger did with this. I am fortunate enough to have a Rickenbacker 360 electric 12-string like the one used in the movie, so I used it here. I also used a second Stratocaster...
The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell
มุมมอง 296หลายเดือนก่อน
I felt the need to cover a soothing, calm song at this time, and Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game" has always appealed to me. It's another example of a young person writing a song much beyond her years. (She was 23 when she wrote this in 1966.) Joni Mitchell played this song in open G tuning with the capo on the 4th fret, making the song in the key of B. I am used to playing this in standard tu...
Runaway by Del Shannon (cover)
มุมมอง 646หลายเดือนก่อน
"Runaway" was a number 1 hit in the USA in 1961 when this song was released and it made it big impact on me at 13 years old. It's fun to be able to play and record this song so many years later. And it takes only 2:20 to get through this song; it's so short yet very impactful. What a cool song. I kept the organ solo much simpler than the original so that it's less intimidating for guitar player...
Carolina in my Mind by James Taylor

The people of North Carolina have been on my mind lately after the horrible flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. That made me think of "Carolina in my Mind," which I haven't played in quite a few years. As a result, I relearned this song and present it here with lyrics and chord diagrams. I hope you are all doing okay. - Glenn
Summer of '69 by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance

I lost my voice this summer from laryngitis from a virus I picked up and so was messing with my electric guitars a lot. I kept coming back to "Summer of '69". So in spite of my really being an old folk singer, I am covering Summer of '69 here. In the summer of 1969 my wife and I were 21 years old, engaged to be married, and looking at life with a whole lot of promise. That sort of matches the h...
Things We Said Today by Lennon-McCartney (cover)

This is early Beatles from their 1964 "Hard Day's Night" album. I've known this song since I started on the guitar when I was 16 years old. I wanted to do something that emphasized the acoustic guitar. This is only 2 1/2 minutes long, short and sweet, a fun song to play as well as upbeat. Thanks for listening! - Glenn
Our House by Graham Nash (guitar cover)

Graham Nash wrote and performed this song on the piano, so I worked out a guitar arrangement that I used here. I have simplified the piano arrangement a little to make it easier to play on the guitar. I've provided chord diagrams and lyrics with the video. Graham Nash played this in the key of A on the piano. I eventually decided to play this for my voice in the key of G, which is capo 5 using ...
Flying Shoes by Townes Van Zandt (cover)

"Flyin' Shoes" was written in 1978. Townes was living near Franklin, TN where a significant US Civil War battle had been fought. "If I Needed You" by Townes Van Zandt (cover)
มุมมอง 8665 หลายเดือนก่อน
Structurally, this song is a simple 1,4,5 chord progression, in this case, G, C, D with the capo on the 8th fret where Lyle Lovett played this song. (Townes played this in a lower key, with the capo on the 4th fret.) But by using the Travis pick and picking out pieces of the melody as it's played, it gets more complicated. I heard this recently and was reminded of what a sweet song it was. I ho...
Tunnel 13 by Mark Knopfler (cover)
มุมมอง 1.3K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
"Tunnel 13" is a song from Mark Knopfler's latest 2024 CD "One Deep River," so it's a very recent release. The song struck me because I was well aware of custom, luthier-built guitars using Tunnel 13 redwood tops. Tunnel 13 is an old railroad tunnel in the Siskiyou Mountains of northern California, also the site of a tragic train robbery in 1923 in which four Southern Pacific Railroad workers w...
"She's Come Undone" by Randy Bachman [The Guess Who] (cover)
มุมมอง 1K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
The song "Undun" was part of a 1969 Guess Who album; I always thought this song was really cool. Recently, I started working on this and finally figured it out. It's a challenge because the tempo is so very fast and both the words and the chord changes come at you at about 90 mph all at the same time. So because of that I am singing to my guitar half the time as I try not to mess up. But it's a...
True Love Will Never Fade by Mark Knopfler (cover)
มุมมอง 1.2K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
I have always loved the old rock and roll feel of this song, with it's sort of Elvis Presley chord progression. But what really makes this song come alive is Mark Knopfler's beautiful Stratocaster playing behind the acoustic guitar and the mellow vocal line. I hope you enjoy my take on this song. I have always thought that Mark Knopfler's story and his guitar tones were terrific in this 2004 song about Ray Kroc and early McDonald's history. I do not have Ray Kroc's "killer instinct" but I have known a few people who do and this song tells a good story about this kind of personality. I used my Rickenbacker 360 electric 12-string for the rhythm part of this song while Mark Knopfler used a...

I have always thought this great Bob Seger song was really appealing and interestingly, it's not terribly hard to play and would make a good song for a new guitar player to learn. To help with this, I put up chord diagrams along with the video. The live version of this song uses a really melodic saxophone line to start and end the video, but since I am not a sax player, I used my Gibson Les Pau...

Glenn -- just LOVED the movie and am still so surprised it wasn't a box-office hit. It should have been! And don't even get me started about how "That Thing You Do" somehow didn't win the Academy Award or Golden Globe for Best Song. A travesty! Awesome job. Keep up the good work. Did you use a backing track for this one? What Gordon Lightfoot songs have you not done? I love your cover of ode to big blue. That was very well done. I also like your cover of Minstrel of the Dawn.

@@fluteplayer8636 Hi Amanda, I use Cubase and EZ Drummer with Windows, but these programs cost money. Something like Audacity is free so there is that benefit. Wow! Beautifully done. Keep up the good work. In the second chorus, it sounded like you were doing backing vocals as well as lead vocals. What type of guitar were you using for this piece? Six or 12 string? By the way, Quincy Jones passed away. May he rest in peace. He was well known for the 1985 song. We are the world for the U.S.A. for Africa project. Yesterday, I listened to a documentary about the making of this song. When you listen to it on a CD or on TH-cam, it is a beautifully woven piece of music. The time and effort that it took was quite a while. By the way, still practicing Gordon Lightfoot music.
Thank you Amanda, I did add backing vocals singing harmony starting on the 2nd chorus. I used my Olson SJ model guitar for this piece, the same kind of guitar James Taylor uses. I added a second guitar, a high-strung guitar starting at the 3rd chorus, so it sounds a little like a 12-string, but it was not. I did see that Quincy Jones passed away just a couple of days ago. He had a very full life and really accomplished some wonderful stuff. I saw the original "We Are The World" program on HBO of how they put the studio session together years ago and I have always thought it was terrific. Keep up the good work on Gordon Lightfoot's music. And stay safe and healthy. - Glenn
@ thanks. I will. That is so cool that you did backing vocals as well as lead vocals along with two different guitars. The time and effort it takes to put a song like we are the world together is incredible. I'm doing very well. Last night and Friday night were very busy at work, but the dishwashing machine was broken, so it took the crew in the dish pit a while to wash the silverware by hand. They literally had to wash all the dishes by hand. Quincy Jones was 91 years of age.
