Nice rendition to this classic. The use of the hight string tuning guitar gives the original and unique sound by Red Shea.
    Thanks for sharing this.

This is so wonderful...your guitar sounds so beautiful..you have done such a marvelous rendition of this song! Takes me back to the first time I ever heard it. My Mom so often had Lightfoot records playing when I would get home from school...such good memories. Thank you for this

hi Kathy. It's nice to meet you. My real name is Amanda, but on TH-cam and Discord, I go by Flute player 86. There's a reason for that. I am a player of the orchestral concert flute, also known as the western flute, and I was born in 1986. I'd like to learn ode to big blue by Gordon Lightfoot on Flute, but I don't know if I can. It seems a little bit tricky to me. Do you think I can do it? by the way, I can't read music. Braille music is very tough, not to mention entirely confusing. I play everything by ear and from memory. I'm working with the peace pussy willows cat tails by Gordon Lightfoot right now as we speak. I'm glad Mr. Lightfoot left us with this beautiful legacy. I'm glad he also left behind his website which contains lyrics and chords to every song he's ever recorded. I was introduced to it by an ex friend. I say ex, because I no longer talk to her. If you have any questions about my visual impairment, or the technology I use, feel free to ask. I'd be glad to tell you. This ex friend also wanted me to give up some thing ideally enjoy. That is Star Wars. For as long as I can remember, the characters and the music of Star Wars and also other John Williams music have been a part of my life. I'm not giving up something I enjoy just because they want me too. I'm glad to be out of that situation, and it would be nice to talk to you.

Why are the real artists not recognized as artists? There are people who don't play and sing that well, but they are at the top of the hit lists. I don't really understand this world, even though I understand it.

Hi Glenn. It's Amanda. I am listening to your cover of Ode to big blue by the Lake Gordon Lightfoot. I am just curious about some thing. Are you using your 12 string, or your six string? It sounds like you might be using your 12 string guitar. Have you ever thought of doing a tutorial on ode to big blue? Great job with the sound effects. Love the sound of the foghorn at the beginning of the piece. I also love the sound of the harpoon gun going off in the water. I love how Mr. Lightfoot describes a lot of imagery in his pieces, especially having to do with animals and nature. what is your favorite piece from the album Summertime Dream? I love the whole album. There's not a song on that album. I don't like. One of my favorite pieces on the album is the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. That happened back in 1975 on November 10. I was born in 1986. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Have you ever thought of trying some thing called audio descriptive? It will describe things for you during the movie or TV show. It helps me a lot. It's a track for the blind or visually impaired. you have macular degeneration. Is it in both eyes or one?

Hi Amanda, Nice to hear from you! I hope all is well. Yes, the Ode to Big Blue is a cool song. I live on the Pacific coast in Washington state, so sometimes we see Gray Whales going up and down the coast. You have good ears, that's for sure. What you hear really does sound like a 12-string guitar, but it's not. In this recording I first recorded a 6-string guitar then I made a second recording track and recorded a high-strung guitar with the first recording. A high-strung guitar is a guitar using only the 6 highest strings from a 12-string guitar string set. So, when you combine these two guitars, it sounds like a 12-string guitar, but perhaps a little less muddled, a little cleaner sounding. I took that approach because that is what Gordon Lightfoot did on his recording. I could hear what he was doing in the recording. It's a cool sound, combining a 6-string and high-strung guitar. Regarding your comment about the fog horn at the beginning of the song, that is really a recording of a Blue Whale. It really does sound like a fog horn! The harpoon gun is a small cannon that shoots out a harpoon at high velocity. It's really a nasty thing for killing whales. It's mostly illegal these days to use such a thing. Summertime Dream: yes, that was a great album. I'm like you. I like all the songs on that album. I did a cover of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I am pretty sure you have heard it. I remember when that ore boat went down in a November storm. I grew up on the south side of Lake Erie near Cleveland, OH so I grew up watching the ore boats coming into Cleveland. My mother's uncles were all ships' engineers on the ore boats on the Great Lakes, so it was very much part of the culture where I grew up. I have not used the audio descriptive feature. Thanks for the suggestion; it could be helpful to me. I imagine it helps you. Regarding my macular degeneration issues, a recent appointment with my eye doctor shows that it's gone away, maybe because of some medicine I have been taking. So that is a bit of good news. Nice to hear from you and be well Amanda.

@@glennwillow5124 wow. That's good that your macular degeneration disappeared. I'm glad to hear that. I did not know that the sound at the beginning of the ode to big blue that you covered was the sound of a blue whale. That's interesting. I'll have to listen to it again. it's pretty neat that you use both a six string and a high string guitar. If I remember right, the Edmund Fitzgerald was about 700 feet long? That's awesome that you grew up near Lake Erie. There's a great way to remember the five great lakes. the pneumonic device I use is homes. Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, superior. It's pretty interesting how Huron, Ontario, and Erie come from Indians, and so does Michigan if I remember right. Superior though, comes from the British. I love how Gordon Lightfoot in his song, tells you the Great Lakes himself. He uses the following line. Lake Huron rules, superior sings, in the rooms of her icewater mansion. Old Michigan, Michigan steams like a young man's dreams, the islands and bays are for sportsman. And farther below lake Ontario, takes in what lake Erie can send her. and the iron boats go as the Mariners all know, with the gales of November remembered.

@@fluteplayer8636 Hi Amanda, Yes, the Edmund Fitzgerald was, I think, 728 ft long, so it was a big cargo ship, which is probably why the hull was prone to breaking in half under the action of the severe storm and waves. With the ship's hull so long, there would be more mechanical advantage for breaking the hull in half, especially in the cold month of October. When a steel hull is cold it's more likely to suffer brittle fracture since steel loses ductility when it's colder. Yes, the Edmund Fitzgerald is a sad story. Stay well! - Glenn

@@glennwillow5124 wow. I wonder why ships are not made of something stronger. The 1912 sinking of the titanic I don't think was supposed to occur. They thought the ship was unsinkable. In this case, though, there is lot of speculation as to how the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. Did she sink because of, the storm? Did she sink because the cargo was too much? Why did he sink? No one really knows. I fell asleep listening to Summertime Dream. When I can't sleep, I'll type some thing on the PC, or I will listen to something on my phone. descriptions will definitely help you if you need them. My mom who is also completely sided well sometimes use the audio descriptions even when I'm not around. Especially she doesn't feel like looking at the TV screen. It's a really neat feature. I'm glad to hear your macular degeneration disappeared.

@@fluteplayer8636 Well, steel is pretty strong, but it has limits and so does everything else in this world. Big ships are generally made from steel as it's the most practical material around for this job. But, things can break if we are not careful. They have pretty much figured out how the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. The ship's hull broke in half under the stress of being pounded by the huge winds and waves. As you have noted, all the weight of the iron ore in the hold added to the stresses that broke the hull. Yes, I will try the audio descriptions and see what it's like. And yes, it's a very good thing that the macular degeneration disappeared. Be well, Amanda. - Glenn

wow! Beautifully done Glenn. By the way, I like the sound effects. The sound of the foghorn at the beginning of the piece, and then the sound of the gunshot in the middle. Did you do those yourself? Are you playing a 12 string guitar in this piece, or a six string? Just curious. What is the difference in Sound between a 12 string guitar and a six string? Do they sound the same, or are they different in Sound. they might be different in size as well. I've seen a 12 string guitar, but not in a long time. I'm still working with pussy willows cattails on Flute. If you want, you can subscribe to my channel.❤

HI Amanda, It's wonderful to hear from you! Thank you for listening! The "fog horn" at the beginning of the video is really the sound of the blue whale. I am using a 6-string guitar on the left side of the stereo image and a Nashville high-strung guitar on the right side, and the combination of the two guitars does have a 12-string sound. A Nashville high-strung guitar uses the highest strings from each pair of strings used on a 12-string guitar. The gunshot in the video also was the sound of the harpoon cannon, not something I recorded. I hope you are doing well. - Glenn
