Polynomials, factoring, long division, rates of change & features of graphs
Polynomials can be difficult to factor, but with the integer or rational roots theorems, we can assess all possible roots and then do long division or synthetic division to find which possible values actually are roots. This video shows how to do that, but for higher order polynomials with leading coefficients and constants that are not 1, this process can be extremely time consuming. Hence, we should use technology! A-Levels test takers excluded, students of math should let the technologies do the easy work so the humans can focus on the harder jobs like making sense of the graphs, and finding the meaning of the otherwise abstract and arguably trivial math. With the help of a TI-84 emulator, Dr T plots out a fifth degree polynomial, finds its roots both algebraically and graphically, and then associates key features of the graph, its first and second derivatives.

Big stuff is made of smaller stuff. The smaller stuff may be stuck together, making it look like it can’t be broken down, but indeed there are semi-discrete elements joined together in mathematical statements such that we can often remove common factors and break down larger objects into smaller pieces. Does order matter or not? How many possible arrangements are there? How many outcomes exist over several trials if each trial has an equal number of outcomes? These are questions for combinatorics. Boredom is a choice. Video games and TicToc videos are likewise boring, just as sporting events and various other forms of entertainment are boring depending on who you ask. The trick is to find a reason to be interested. Physics, molecular biology, organic chemistry - the hard yet valuable subjects - aren’t all fun & games. People engage for knowledge, and the process of acquiring knowledge becomes the fun. It’s easy to say something is boring, and then use that internally-generated feeling of boredom as a reason to avoid a task. Each person has to find a reason to engage, and the best advice I can offer is that when one knows relatively little about the world, then exploration and learning ought to be fun, because everything is new. If somebody knew English very well, then I would expect this would be boring because it’s nothing new, but a good attitude for a student, and moreover any person who wants to learn, is to think of the unknown as intrinsically interesting. How else can we make progress? It can’t all be high production computer graphics, action, video gaming - media which engages mostly passive users. Thanks for the comment. That school is boring is neither a new idea nor particularly helpful.

    • @dradamt1772
      @dradamt1772 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Finding would leave no verb, since finding without a be verb is a gerund. Also, finding isn’t an adjective that could be parallel with churning, and that leave the question of where the mountains fit into the idea expressed. Most importantly, the sentence needs a verb. I’ll put up some new videos soon. I tried to move so quickly through these old practice tests that I didn’t explain some things completely.

steers Spirits rising while falling deeper in love Sleeping under stars and dreaming of what’s up above Sharing good times on our epic road trip together Making memories that will surely last forever In our country so vast, so grand, and so bold As it deals with its past as stories are told A juxtaposed chronology of new and of old A territory stolen where people were bought and sold Where freedom is expensive and children sleep in the cold Where a privatized highway to heaven charges a toll Where Cluesoesque gumshoes cost too many souls And privileged exectives tighten payrolls While corporate criminals manipulate political polls Where layperson lawmakers put the majority on hold Where mobs of lawyers chase ambulances like shoals Where schools are underfunded and big business is on the dole Where Canadian health care is conflated with Venezuela bread lines Where civil justice is inaccessible & protestors face impossible fines Where nearly one in five has seen the inside of a cell Where camels apparently thread eyes of needles while millions languish in a living hell In America there are too many injustices and abuses for one person to tell There’s a fissure in the culture like a fractured Liberty Bell But even still it’s not like everything is unwell Nor everyone on a highway to hell Nor every town reeking of the Bovina bullshit smell Nor are many people advertising their souls or minds to sell So as we drove across the country we found an American tale to tell That began in an ivory tower of sin but eventually fell And ever-so-slowly amended its ways through recent days Even in spite of all the media craze and what that one crazy uncle unfortunately says America is so clearly mine but also hers and yours From forests to deserts, from valleys to shores Acceptance and tolerance ooze out of its pores Laws can be changed as there’s irreverence for days of yore Customs and cultures are fluid as minds open their doors Maybe the only true constant is that nobody really knows what’s in store In our gargantuan socio-politico-economic experiment The truth about science and empirical facts cannot relent People constantly try to tear it down but hardly make a dent Even when corrupt crony officials refuse to repent And egomaniacal money hoarders get addicted to seeking rent Regular civilians pick apart warehouses of data on issues divergent Inspect it, detect it, and piece it together via processes convergent As time marches on, even the most convoluted quagmire begins to make sense And knowledge kicks us from the past to the present tense Where passionate people make wicked smart arguments Too powerful to suppress as public opinion foments As individuals and collectives drop their psycho-mechanisms protective As empathy and citizenship become primary directives As a critical mass becomes sufficiently introspective And as information technology provides overwhelming perspective Oddly enough some ancient maniac racist fanatical fools With wooden teeth and whiskey drool did something right by giving a few tools That empower a people to write their own rules Regardless of religions or popular superstition Nothwithstanding races, colors, or creeds Enlightened interpretation of timeless doctrine is all one needs To read into and out of those old parchment feeds All developed to stand in place of some magical mustard seed And with only that morsel of faith and a touch of care Strange as it seems, that habitual offender, flawed system can take everybody anywhere Those rotten old racist and bigoted structures can also become fair That’s just the wildly revolutionary free spirit of philosophies conceptualized over there Not much of anything is written in stone and so long as we are human we can all atone Except for the physical laws of our infinite universe None of these regulations nor procedures are perpetually-valid verse What was once alive in America has been sent to the grave officially cursed Struck down and thrown out with prejudice by summary judgements most terse There are many possible realities, and this one is certainly not the worst Now that doesn’t mean our country is perfect nor even the best But it’s certainly got comparative and competitive advantages against the rest And these facts were apparent as we headed home from the West With our seatbelts across our chests, feeling completely destressed and rather impressed Sure, it was a little ambitious those 9000 miles But we saw so many landscapes as they transitioned through styles All the while enjoying some fresh air, some music and smiles The car was a bit cramped, and in those last couple days I had to sleep at a couple rest areas as we missed our Iowa stay I didn’t care to fight my drowsiness at night as the lights began to fade Our average velocity diminished with our direction in retrograde Ballin on a budget, spending only a bit more than I got paid It would be months before we recognized how many memories we made Out in the wild like some kind of funky birds and bees With our tent and Dodge like the pod for these two peas Probably reduced the bug population by no less than one billion flies and fleas As we drove through those burnt out, smokey, and lush green trees Praying in foreign languages, saying our thanks and our please Eatin good in some caribou & bison’s neighborhood, cooking with wood Listening to others talk about what has been and what might could Feeling ever-so-slightly proud, but mostly just as we should Grateful, gracious, and thankfully understood

    @33:30 the BBC table should say rate per 100,000. I commented about that in the video as it seemed off, but I took it at face value considering the BBC is a trusted source of information. It goes to show that even reliable sources make mistakes sometimes, which is why retractions and corrections such as this are added to articles and posts. St. Louis, Baltimore, New Orleans, and Detroit rank among the top 50 most dangerous cities in the world (see madison.com/news/national/the-30-cities-with-the-highest-murder-rates-in-the-us/collection_33b57fa7-d832-502d-ad55-aa29609b9a57.html#25 or www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/detroit-city/2020/09/28/detroit-violent-crime-leads-nation-flint-big-drop/3536062001/ and www.statista.com/statistics/243797/ranking-of-the-most-dangerous-cities-in-the-world-by-murder-rate-per-capita/). Those cities have 10x or more higher homicide rates than the national average, and they are roughly as dangerous as those countries listed in earlier slides where homicide rates are extraordinarily high.

    @10:20 the percent of homicides committed by foreigners may be higher in the US compared to global averages. A moving average of stats provided in reports from ICE suggests about 10% could be attributable to aliens, a category including both visa holders and people who entered the country illegally. See, www.ice.gov/sites/default/files/documents/Document/2019/eroReportFY2019.pdf Other studies found persons without visas are less likely to commit crimes when compared to both legal residents and citizens, which was the main point in this part of the video. @23:33 to 26:07 minutes, I mistakenly spoke about the table as if it referred to victims rather than offenders. The difference in the 16,xxx and 14,xxx numbers between this table and that on the previous slide reflects the fact that in many homicide cases there are multiple offenders per one victim, so the total number of offenders in 2018 was higher. Nothing in that portion was otherwise misleading, but I was incorrect in my discussion of that table as if it pertained to victims, and the difference in totals thus was not some methodological difference between or within department or agency reports. Apologies.

    1) By reflecting away 30% of ISR the albedo, which would not exist w/o the atmosphere, makes the earth cooler than it would be without the atmosphere like that reflective panel set on the dash. Remove the atmosphere/GHGs and the earth becomes much like the moon, a barren rock with a 0.1 albedo, 20% more kJ/h, hot^3 on the lit side, cold^3 on the dark. O-ring gasket materials and other technologies have changed, and the shuttle flight system is no longer used, so actual launch temperatures today may be below the estimated value based on the Challenger shuttle data. Note: there could actually be a couple outliers in that data; I didn't define outlier precisely, and only assumed there weren't any because the data was created using Excel's NORMINV(RAND(),B2,C2) function. Outliers are data with values falling 1.5 times the interquartile range above or below the mean. Typically, they don't exist in normally distributed data, but sometimes with large samples, they are present.
