Trafficking in persons is documented through ages. Numbers of persons exploited for labor in the antebellum South appear to have been due in significant part to trafficking in persons in the period following 1808 ban on importation of slaves, but historians discount the possibility of more widespread criminal trafficking. Reasons are unclear, but statistics do not support their hypothesis of natural population growth among slave populations in the early USA.
