TI-84 Commands: Absolute value

  • Absolute value equations look like V or inverted V with the turning point vertex at the x value that makes |ax+b|=0 true. Absolute value can never be negative, but we can multiply by negative 1 to invert the graph. For example, |x+2| will return negative values because the positive outputs from |x+2| will be multiplied by -1. Other than the corners, absolute value equations work the same as other equations. The slope stays the same magnitude but changes +/ on either side of the vertex. Use reverse order of operations (SADMEP) to convert into y=mx+b form in order to input into TI calculators. You can find values using the table on the calculator or choose values to substitute and make your own. Algebra, graphs, and tables are three different ways to represent the same concepts.
