C&O TOWPATH AND GAP TRAIL DAYS 7 & 8 I CYCLED FROM SORREL RIDGE TO ANTIETAM CREEK CAMPSITE
มุมมอง 1.2Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Another beautiful two days cycling on the C&O Towpath from the Sorrel Ridge campsite to the Antietam Creek campsite. I experienced many different types of terrain from deep woods to biking along the Potomac river. I saw wildlife along with spectacular views of the river. You really must do this ride for an enjoyable trek along a mostly flat route. Only two more days until I reach mile marker "0...

Day 6 I cycled the C&O Towpath from Cumberland, MD to the Sorrel Ridge Hiker Biker Campsite. Cycling the Towpath in the middle of May brings challenges. The area experienced a lot of rain, therefore the trail was muddy but beautiful. It was muddy but a fun ride, especially with my Priority 600X with 2 1/4" tires and Pinion drive. My bike is equipped with a carbon belt drive and internal gearing...

Do you do your own editing and about how long does it take to produce one video (not including the ride)? Is your background in filmography? It's fascinating! Steve, although all your videos are incredibly inspiring, this one is particularly so to me. As a 70 year old cyclist just getting back to riding over the past 2 years, I've started becoming discouraged over how slow my progress has been. I guess I just remember my youth and how I used to ride forever without getting tired. My goal is to ride from Plymouth, MA to Provincetown, MA (~80 miles), but so far the longest I've been able to ride is 40 miles. Your 100 mile ride gives me hope that I'll eventually be able to reach my goal and that age is no barrier!

    So great to see this.Makes me want to move back to DC. Moved to CT after DC and rode the old rail trail (forget the name) I just remember starting in Cheshire. Thanks for taking us on your ride!

      Hi there and thanks for your comment! It was probably the Farmington Canal trail. I was on it last week. Great trail. Thanks again and all the best, Steve

    Awesome. We were there earlier in the spring and loved it. What kind of camera are you using?

      Hi there, I was using a DJI Pocket 3 as my main camera. And a Insta360 Ace Pro mounted on the handlebars. The Ace Pro is not the best for vlogging since you must hold it two feet away from your face for it to be in focus. Thanks and have a great day, Steve

    Hi Steve. That Pinion gearbox/belt drive combo really makes sense to me for these conditions. The bike you have at $3500 (I think) is out of my price range but the Priority 600 (which is also Pinion/belt) is about $1000 less. How do you think that bike would work on the C&O?

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the 600 would work just fine. The muddy conditions I experienced were unusual. The 600 is an excellent choice as long as it's not extremely muddy.

    Loved your video. Back in the 80s living in Reston, Va , just before dawn, I’d ride west on the WO&D towpath to Leesburg, then north and take the ferry to the White’s Ferry restaurant where scratch made pancakes with real maple syrup wood fuel your journey down to DC. Then back to Reston mostly on the WO&D. 100 miles. Now like you in my later 70s I treasure those rides. Glad to follow your adventures.

      Hi David, since then I've been more meticulous on retorquing critical components before every ride. Also considering Loctite red on the kickstand since "blue" isn't getting it done. Good to hear you're still riding! Have a good day, Steve

    Hi Steve; I am starting to outfit my 600x for touring - How did you attach your water bottle cages to the front forks? I like your setup👍

      Hi Mike, I found mounts on Amazon, Topeak Versa Bike Mount (2 Piece per Set). They are plastic but very stable. I've used them for about 800 miles with no problem. And they only cost $12. Thanks for asking and have a good day, Steve

    Gee Steve....have you thought about adding some fenders to the bike to shield you from so much mud?

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there and thanks for the question. I have investigated fenders for this bike. There is no easy effective solution. I have added a piece of Lexan under the rear rack. The bike gets dirty but I am protected from most of the mud. I also use the best quality waterproof bags. The bike and drive train get dirty and I simply wash them off with water. No chain or exposed gearing to worry about. Thanks, Steve
