Excellent review, thank you Steve! It contains the most pertinent info for me as a cyclist on the road! And, cutting the grass AFTER a ride AND product review?! Go, Steve!
Hi there and thanks for your comment! Just trying to stay active, although I wish the grass would stop growing so fast. Have a great day tomorrow. Steve
Hey there Steve! Have you seen the Garmin Varia RTL515? It’s a rear view radar and taillight that connects with your edge and lets you know when there are cars, and sometimes riders, coming up behind you. Thought you might like to check it out. They are on sale at Garmin right now. I have it and love it.
Thanks for the review! I currently use ear buds that go around my neck & the earbuds are retractable. However, they go into the ear so maybe not as safe although I do hear traffic. You say you are safety oriented but what about your helmet? It’s advised we wear them with only two finger widths of space between your eyebrows & helmet, thereby protecting your frontal cortex. So move that helmet a little farther down your forehead for improved brain safety.
I agree that safety is the primary concern. My helmet doesn’t interfere with the headphones at all. The headphones have a minimal “ear ganger that fits close to my head. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
From the quick research I just did, it does not look like it works with Google Assistant. Having the hands free ability to say hey Google call an ambulance after an accident or crash is a safety feature we need. Google Pixel has crash detection built into the phone but the voice command is a back up. Also to be hands free to say change song, find out what new text says, ask it a question, or talking to it to avoid insanity lol. Still a good idea for head phones with the open air but they need to build it in.
I only ride with one headphone in at a time. On the roads I only use the right and on rail trails I'll switch it up. Plus the Garmin varia really helps alert me of what's behind me
Thanks for keeping it real with the “bare bones” you - grateful for the honest input. Question - since the speakers sit just outside of your ear, can people close to you hear them playing? Look like an interesting design.
Hi Elizabeth, the earphones are better than I thought they would be. I don’t think others near by would hear the earphones. The sound is very directional and crisp. I hope all is well with you. Take care, Steve
Hi Steve. Great review. I am interested to know if the bone conducting headphones you tried at the airport were made by Shokz. Several cyclists I know use them (there are several versions) and they love them and swear by the quality of the sound. I also know there are a lot of crappy bone conducting headphones on the market and wonder if the ones you got at the airport were of poor quality. Might be worth trying a pair of Shokz and doing an AB comparison with the units in this video. Keep up the good work! 👏👏👏
Hi there, it was a few years ago so I don’t remember the brand. Although they were expensive the quality was poor. Yes it would be interesting to do a side by side comparison review with a good quality bone conducting headphone. Thanks, Steve
I understand people's affinity for their gadgets, but headphones of any kind are just something I can't get behind. I ride to get away from the usual background noise. I enjoy hearing some couple discussing their garden. Or the sounds of children playing unburdened by the harsh realities of adulthood. Or the birds. It's what keeps me aware of my surroundings and fully engaged with the present. I would never even think of replacing that with a list of songs I've already heard thousands of times or (god forbid) talk radio.
Hi Chuck and thank you for taking the time to write your opinion. There’s a time and place for everything. We all appreciate the sounds, and sights of peacefully cycling down the road. When on a multi day bike journey, l find listening to background music or an audio book adds to the experience of 40/50 miles of cycling. Those that use their bikes as transportation only also enjoy the added enjoyment of connecting with music as they would driving their automobile to work. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
I bikepack to get out away from gadgets and be more aware of nature and the journey I happen to be on. I have a dedicated GPS and that is it. And there some jurisdictions where it is against the law to wear head phones of any kind while cycling.
I have a pair of these earphones and my biggest complain is the buttons are VERY hard to use. I've given up trying to use them. The sound is very good, but be warned if you have smaller ears they won't sit properly on your ears. Because of the near useless buttons I would not recommend these earphones. I much prefer my Shokz OpenRun bone conductor earphones.
Hi there and thanks for sharing your experience with the earphones. Everyone’s ears are different and the earphones fit mine nicely. Haven’t had any problems with the buttons. If I did, I’d return them. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
Hi Alain and thank you for your comment. After researching cycling headphones laws, I discovered that 2 of the 50 States in the USA have banned their use. And to your point, they are banned in some countries. Note taken and I've advised in the video description to check with local laws before riding with headphones. We must all ride safely and within the law.
Vehicles are going to be harder to hear with electric cars. Listening to music while biking and listening to cars is great. Mirrors are best sometimes i just hear my bike thinking its a car LoL. Definitely need to use mirrors more

I’ve heard about it. Sounds like a winner. I will check it out on their website. Thanks and have a good night, Steve
The Varia Radar is the best accessory I have ever bought for cycling because it keeps me alive. Safety first! 😊

Get a Garmin varia radar, it is a great device that tells you when cars, cyclists, and ebikers are approaching
