As an e-biker this is a fantastic innovation and really opens up a world of options as to what bike you can ride. The only down side I see to it at the moment is that you can’t run a rear rack with it installed. I’m not thrilled by the look of it either but that could just be me. It looks like there’s a tail pipe on the back of the bike. Thanks for your thorough review. I’m considering this for my road bike.

Can I asked where you ordered them. Indiegogo will not give me any information at all about whether they will send it or not. I don't want to fund this I want to buy two of them. I think that if you went thru indigogo it is a site that raises money for this product. RE: Fits all bikes Innovative product and great review. I have an extra large Trek XL hybrid bike. I'm forced to return the PB II for it does not get close enough to the wheel, or at least I can't get it to . There's a diagram for that showing no more than 0.8 inches distance or it not fit right..
Thanks for this detailed informed video. It got me considering it especially when you said it can work on Priority 600x as I use my bike for daily commutes and work this will be an essential investment.

I would love to try one of these on a recumbent trike, but they don't have seat posts to mount it to. I would have to make a pseudo seat post to mount it. It would work on my upright bike though if I took off the rear rack. It wouldn't work for a bike packing trip unless you can reconfigure your panniers. I mainly need help on hills to keep me going fast enough so I don't fall over as I pedal. The proof of its usefulness would be how it handles hills. Great video Steve. You did an outstanding job with this review.
Hi Kelly and thank you for your comment. I had to remove my rear rack so no panniers using the device. As far as hill climbing, if the hill is over 3% the unit doesn't give much of a boost. Otherwise it works very well. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Great review Steve, would like to try this out but we have racks on our bikes and I don't think it will fit without taking it off. We use the rack for our detachable bags when we are on a long ride.

nice. given how it's mounted, it will only work for hardtail bikes? that is, a full suspension bike wouldn't work. Maybe it should be spring loaded to add pressure on the tire...

Great video. One question how do you uninstall and reinstall the break mechanism that attaches to the brake handle. Is it magnetic or stick? If it’s the latter then I’m curious how you switch to other bikes?? Thank you
It does fine on bumpy roads since the unit is calibrated to be against the tire at the proper pressure. It looks and feels durable. However I wouldn’t take it on extreme wet gravel. Thanks, Steve

When you click on the company that makes it you are directed to Indiegogo. Then Indiegogo writes me and says any questions I have will need to be referred to the company/creator. This is really unprofessional if you ask me. It is either available or not available. One guy on your site said he has been waiting for 9 months for his. Not right at all. I think he probably paid to fund it when he thought he was buying it. You are a nice person I can see that. Would be very careful just in case it comes back to you in regards to referring people to Indiegogo to buy it. I have the emails if you would like me to forward to you.
I don't know whats going on. The company contacted me months ago to test their unit. As you know, I tested it and found it to be a good product. Can't speak for the company since then. Hopefully they are just backlogged and they will honor all orders.
It looks great, It could be a good idea for future models of the pikaboost to have a self charge mode, for instance when on a flat or downhill ride the mini wheel turns into a dynamo of sorts and instead of propelling the bike forwards it instead converts the motion of the spinning wheel into electricity and charges the battery back up even possibly auto switching between modes when out on a ride to extend the ride distance, dynamos have been around for years so it’s definitely possible I just don’t know if it’s worth it yet? Maybe as battery technology progresses it could become a thing? Who knows 🤷🏻♂️

When will they add noise cancellation to the unit??? I’m being very serious. (Yes, just like the ones you can find in earbuds or headphones.) The noise it produces is the one thing holding me back from jumping on board with this generation… and I’m going to guess there’s a relative “range of sound” that can be heard on all or most wheels and they could easily “tune” the ANC (active noise canceling) towards that range. Keep in mind: this doesn’t need to be same quality or tiny size that you find in super expensive earbuds so, again, I’m guessing it wouldn’t be that much of an upfront expense (using a primitive device that creates the negative soundwaves to drown out loudness), but, in turn, would make a huge impact in user experience & translate to better sales. I’d love for someone to share this with Livall!!!
Hi there and thanks for your comment. Great idea that will be passed on to LIVALL. The unit being mounted behind the rider makes very little noise. My indoor demonstration was loud because of the camera microphone being placed close to the motor. When riding, I found that I couldn't hear the motor disengage (turn off) when I applied the brakes. The only noise was from the units wheel turning against the bicycle tire. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve

Hi there, it appears they are back ordered with the first units shipping toward the end of September. I believe the overwhelming response has made them ramp up production.
The unit I tested required my phone to set the riding modes. Once I set the mode I could put the phone away. Not sure about the final production units. That would be a good question for the manufacturer LIVALL. If you are carrying your phone it shouldn’t be an issue

Design puts a lot of alternatives to shame. Bigger buttons may be easier on the remote. And my guess, from experience, is that the motor is just slightly under powered - to keep the peace and that. Definately want one thou. Ricky.
Hi Dennis, I'm glad you asked. It's the most comfortable seat ever made. It's made in California by the Infinity Bike Seat company. I own three of their saddles. My wife and I won't use anything else. The design allows your "sit bones" to rest in the cut-outs for great comfort. The seats are the major choice for the "Race Across America". I have a question, if you do not install the remote, can you still ride the bike? If you press the break without the sensors attaches, the motor still disengage or not?
I believe the brakes will stop the bike no matter what mode you're in. The motor will disengage since it's designed to sense the resistance of braking independent of the remote. A lot of safety features built into the motor unit.
Hi Hennie and thanks for the question. I would have to ride at least 4000 km on the PikaBoost 2 to make a judgement. I did a bit of research and found the leading cause of premature tire wear on a friction drive setup is misalignment, low tire pressure or inadequate wheel pressure on the tire. The PikaBoost 2 calibrates proper wheel to tire pressure upon installation. Plus it has a feature that lifts the wheel off the tire when not in use. On paper it doesn't look like excessive tire wear will be a problem. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
How does this not destroy your tire over time from the friction. If the friction wheel isn’t tight on your tire how it can possibly give you the power you require for any degree of slope? It’s a super long review that doesn’t actually show you riding very much. Sure it spins the wheel on a bike stand with no resistance. I want to see real world performance.

Many contraptions like this one have been sold with the same idea: turn a normal bike into an e-bike in 5 minutes. But none of them work. The motor keeps slipping on the tire, the battery offers a limited range (less than 10 miles), the power is disappointing, plus it ruins your rear tire because of the slippage. It's a waste of money. If you want an e-bike, get a proper one. A cheap chinese rear hub 300 watts e-bike will probably cost the same and will provide a far better experience. But don't trust a random guy like me: buy it, test it, and I'm pretty sure it will end up on a shelf in your garage in less than two weeks, never to be used again. Don't hesitate to prove me wrong if it isn't the case : )

I've used it a few times since the video. I honestly don't think the unit will give you much of a boost up 8 to 15% hills. I've noticed that a grade over 4% gives a very minimal boost. Otherwise it works fine on gradual rolling hills.
And if any other valuables such as a bike computer, top tube bag, water bottles, wheels or tire pump, a thief will get those too. Not to mention the whole bike. That's why it's important not to leave a bike unattended in a questionable area.
If the thief cant get it off the bike, they will just take the whole bike instead. It would have to have quick dismount availability to make me interested in a purchase.

Impressive video and a very clever accessory. Philosophically though I couldn’t be more against it. The device gives us things but takes away a lot too. I enjoy using the standard turn signals with my arms. The device takes that away. I enjoy pedaling up a hill under my own power. The device takes that away. The last thing I would want to do when riding my bike is think about electronics and motors. The device takes away our escape from all that and more annoying things. The low tech natural and simple design of a bike are what I love about it; it’s a wonderful respite from all busy things we often want to escape from. The bicycle is one of the last pure and natural machines that gives us solitude and enjoyment and a vacation every time we go for a ride, The device takes that away. Could go on and on but you get my point. Thanks but no thanks.

It reminds me of a viewer from the South of France that did century's until his 80th birthday. And on his 90th he bought a friction drive unit to give him a boost. He loves it. Along with the seat, bike computer, wheels and anything else that’s not locked. That’s why it’s always wise to not a bike in a questionable place when unattended
E-bikes are a nuisance and often dangerous. They should be required to be registered, insured and operators should be a minimum age of 16 and licensed. They should be banned from bike paths and multi use trails. They are "motor vehicles" and should be treated the same as motorcycles. Sad to see Steve pushing these things. I'm 72, been riding since my 20's and still ride 4-5 days a week 20-40 miles with the occasional century or hill climb.

There are many of our older or handicapped viewers that need e-bikes just to get out and ride. The reason I looked for a quality friction drive kit to review was a comment from a Gentleman living in the South of France. In his 70's he could still ride a century. However in his late 80's he was having trouble just riding 40 miles. He bought a "friction drive' unit on his 90th birthday and it gave him new freedom. All kinds of cyclists out there.

And lets face it older cyclists like us are more likely to be cautious because we know we break easier! However its the 16 year old kid on the bike path flying by while looking at his phone that is an issue. However, if you allow older more mature sensible people with motor vehicles on bike paths and trails you can't really restrict the others. I believe I told you the story of the bike path I ride often of a kid on a ebike rocketing by me, not paying attention and plowed into a young lady walking her dog, injuring her and killing the dog. No insurance to help pay for the women's injuries or the mental anguish of watching her beloved pet die a painful death. Let them ride on the streets as motorcycles with licenses, registration, insurance and where police can monitor them and their actions. But you wont change my mind after seeing that incident with the women in pain and watching her dog die because of a moron. Nope, treat them like a motorcycle with laws and liability banned from bike paths and trails.
I agree. That experience should be related to local Congressmen and other organizations that can affect change in our laws. The accident never should have happened! Things need to change. Personally, I'm going to speak with the management of the East Coast Greenway. I know these people and they are politically active. Thanks Jeff!
@@steveretiredandcycling The incident has been reported and the State has a survey out now as well as local cities are looking at it. And similar incidents are more common than you may think. I have pointed out that indeed the lack of attentiveness by the State and other authorities to the issues e-bikes present (also gas powered scooters and skate boards as well as Segways on multi use and bike paths) could be considered in a civil matter as negligence on behalf of the State / County and City could potentially be held liable. Good idea but my concern would be the hill climb ability of the device. I like the concept but id like to see it going up a hill.
It gives minimal power going up a hill over 3%. Otherwise it's got plenty of power.

nice. given how it's mounted, it will only work for hardtail bikes? that is, a full suspension bike wouldn't work. Maybe it should be spring loaded to add pressure on the tire...

looks like it's Kickstarter and Indiegogo now. So not widely available.
It looks great, It could be a good idea for future models of the pikaboost to have a self charge mode, for instance when on a flat or downhill ride the mini wheel turns into a dynamo of sorts and instead of propelling the bike forwards it instead converts the motion of the spinning wheel into electricity and charges the battery back up even possibly auto switching between modes when out on a ride to extend the ride distance, dynamos have been around for years so it’s definitely possible I just don’t know if it’s worth it yet? Maybe as battery technology progresses it could become a thing? Who knows 🤷🏻♂️

When will they add noise cancellation to the unit??? I’m being very serious. (Yes, just like the ones you can find in earbuds or headphones.) The noise it produces is the one thing holding me back from jumping on board with this generation… and I’m going to guess there’s a relative “range of sound” that can be heard on all or most wheels and they could easily “tune” the ANC (active noise canceling) towards that range. Keep in mind: this doesn’t need to be same quality or tiny size that you find in super expensive earbuds so, again, I’m guessing it wouldn’t be that much of an upfront expense (using a primitive device that creates the negative soundwaves to drown out loudness), but, in turn, would make a huge impact in user experience & translate to better sales.

Hi there and thanks for your comment. Great idea that will be passed on to LIVALL. The unit being mounted behind the rider makes very little noise. My indoor demonstration was loud because of the camera microphone being placed close to the motor. When riding, I found that I couldn't hear the motor disengage (turn off) when I applied the brakes. The unit I tested required my phone to set the riding modes. Once I set the mode I could put the phone away. Not sure about the final production units. That would be a good question for the manufacturer LIVALL. If you are carrying your phone it shouldn’t be an issue

Design puts a lot of alternatives to shame. Bigger buttons may be easier on the remote. And my guess, from experience, is that the motor is just slightly under powered - to keep the peace and that. Definately want one thou.

I have a question, if you do not install the remote, can you still ride the bike? If you press the break without the sensors attaches, the motor still disengage or not?
I believe the brakes will stop the bike no matter what mode you're in. The motor will disengage since it's designed to sense the resistance of braking independent of the remote. A lot of safety features built into the motor unit.

Does it wear out the tire?
Hi Hennie and thanks for the question. I would have to ride at least 4000 km on the PikaBoost 2 to make a judgement. I did a bit of research and found the leading cause of premature tire wear on a friction drive setup is misalignment, low tire pressure or inadequate wheel pressure on the tire.
The PikaBoost 2 calibrates proper wheel to tire pressure upon installation. Plus it has a feature that lifts the wheel off the tire when not in use.
On paper it doesn't look like excessive tire wear will be a problem. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
How does this not destroy your tire over time from the friction. If the friction wheel isn’t tight on your tire how it can possibly give you the power you require for any degree of slope?

Many contraptions like this one have been sold with the same idea: turn a normal bike into an e-bike in 5 minutes. But none of them work.
The motor keeps slipping on the tire, the battery offers a limited range (less than 10 miles), the power is disappointing, plus it ruins your rear tire because of the slippage. It's a waste of money.
If you want an e-bike, get a proper one. A cheap chinese rear hub 300 watts e-bike will probably cost the same and will provide a far better experience.
But don't trust a random guy like me: buy it, test it, and I'm pretty sure it will end up on a shelf in your garage in less than two weeks, never to be used again. Don't hesitate to prove me wrong if it isn't the case : )

I've used it a few times since the video. I honestly don't think the unit will give you much of a boost up 8 to 15% hills. I've noticed that a grade over 4% gives a very minimal boost. Otherwise it works fine on gradual rolling hills.

But usually seat bar has some standard allen key or quick release, so if attached to seat post then a thief gets a two for one ;)
And if any other valuables such as a bike computer, top tube bag, water bottles, wheels or tire pump, a thief will get those too. Not to mention the whole bike. That's why it's important not to leave a bike unattended in a questionable area.

Impressive video and a very clever accessory. Philosophically though I couldn’t be more against it. The device gives us things but takes away a lot too. I enjoy using the standard turn signals with my arms. The device takes that away. I enjoy pedaling up a hill under my own power. The device takes that away. The last thing I would want to do when riding my bike is think about electronics and motors. The device takes away our escape from all that and more annoying things. The low tech natural and simple design of a bike are what I love about it; it’s a wonderful respite from all busy things we often want to escape from. The bicycle is one of the last pure and natural machines that gives us solitude and enjoyment and a vacation every time we go for a ride, The device takes that away. Could go on and on but you get my point. Thanks but no thanks.

Any e-bike conversion kit has it's adjustments. A standard e-bike also has particular adjustments.

Along with the seat, bike computer, wheels and anything else that’s not locked. That’s why it’s always wise to not a bike in a questionable place when unattended

E-bikes are a nuisance and often dangerous. They should be required to be registered, insured and operators should be a minimum age of 16 and licensed. They should be banned from bike paths and multi use trails. They are "motor vehicles" and should be treated the same as motorcycles.
Sad to see Steve pushing these things. I'm 72, been riding since my 20's and still ride 4-5 days a week 20-40 miles with the occasional century or hill climb.

There are many of our older or handicapped viewers that need e-bikes just to get out and ride. The reason I looked for a quality friction drive kit to review was a comment from a Gentleman living in the South of France. In his 70's he could still ride a century. However in his late 80's he was having trouble just riding 40 miles. He bought a "friction drive' unit on his 90th birthday and it gave him new freedom. All kinds of cyclists out there.

And lets face it older cyclists like us are more likely to be cautious because we know we break easier! However its the 16 year old kid on the bike path flying by while looking at his phone that is an issue. However, if you allow older more mature sensible people with motor vehicles on bike paths and trails you can't really restrict the others.
I believe I told you the story of the bike path I ride often of a kid on a ebike rocketing by me, not paying attention and plowed into a young lady walking her dog, injuring her and killing the dog. No insurance to help pay for the women's injuries or the mental anguish of watching her beloved pet die a painful death.
Let them ride on the streets as motorcycles with licenses, registration, insurance and where police can monitor them and their actions.
But you wont change my mind after seeing that incident with the women in pain and watching her dog die because of a moron. Nope, treat them like a motorcycle with laws and liability banned from bike paths and trails.
I agree. That experience should be related to local Congressmen and other organizations that can affect change in our laws. The accident never should have happened! Things need to change. Personally, I'm going to speak with the management of the East Coast Greenway. I know these people and they are politically active. Thanks Jeff!
@@steveretiredandcycling The incident has been reported and the State has a survey out now as well as local cities are looking at it. And similar incidents are more common than you may think.
I have pointed out that indeed the lack of attentiveness by the State and other authorities to the issues e-bikes present (also gas powered scooters and skate boards as well as Segways on multi use and bike paths) could be considered in a civil matter as negligence on behalf of the State / County and City could potentially be held liable.
