@@jcsrst I'm in Philly suburbs and ride through the winter unless colder than about 30 deg F or very windy. I tend to take the bike trail to some hilly streets. I want to get used to it yes no bugs! No extreme heat. I'm hoping to acclamate to the cold and build up stamina by summer for no real reason except I'm 53 and feel frumpy and the few times I've been out I pushed myself to go but always enjoy it 😅. Itl be in the low 50s here for a week 😁
Hey Steve! I am a big fan of yours and a Duzer-ite as well. I own a Priority 600 and several ebikes as well. Quick suggestion, if you haven't tried a skull cap in the cold weather you might want to try it. I used a knit hat up until about ten years ago (they look much better). But for me a skull cap keeps more air out and you can put the arms of your glasses on the outside (it's quieter & warmer). Also you don't need to adjust your helmet much. The only downside is that cosmanaut look when not wearing the helmet! Whatever works best for you though! Take care...
Hi Steve and thanks for your comment! My biggest mistake was to forget my "larger" helmet that fits easily over my knit hat. I like your idea regarding the skull cap. Sounds like a good way to go,. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve

I'm 73 and ride in the winter I invested in a pair of silk long johns, their light weight helps you keep warm and wicks away moisture to stay dry so you're not bulked up. I live in CT. also,. so one day our paths might cross.
Hi James and thank you for your comment. Those long johns will be great as the weather is getting cooler for us in Connecticut. Hope to see you out on the trail. What part of CT do you live? Thanks again and all the best, Steve
Lots of winter cyclists here in Ottawa, Canada, where temperatures are generally 10-20 degrees colder than in Connecticut. Many cyclists have switched to fat bikes, which ride on top of the snow when riding on trails.
We were on that trail a week ago today. Beautiful time of year to be out there and you can see so much since the greenery isn't blocking the view of the mountains - Catskills on one side, Berkshires on the other. The whole trail is 25-ish (50 round trip) from Wassaic to Copake. Great ride in any season.

Nice video with great conversation. I have not ridden Millerton/Harlem Valley in a number of years. It was a great ride in the hot days of summer as the cuts through ledges that are cool, it was like riding in air conditioning. Your comments on e-bkes are interesting. The three classes of e-bikes have been regulated in National Parks but individual states have not yet started regulations in most cases. Connecticut is one state that has not implements rules on e-bikes and other electric non-bicycles. As you stated, if you operate with concern for others safety all e-assist acceptable. But the occasional hot shot on the Farmington Valley Trail has gotten my Irish up. Well, keep riding , keep up the videos, us over 70’s have to stick together.
Irish and thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, I think it will take regulations (I hate regulations of our freedom) to get the few yahoo's to comply with safely riding e-bikes on our trails. The Millerton trail is one of my favorites close to home along with the Farmington trail. I'm putting out another e-bike review video either today or tomorrow. I think they have their place in certain circumstances. Anyway, thanks again and have a warm day, Steve
I think the thing about e-bikes is that it’s also really common for road bike riders to practice on rail trails (as they should, everyone deserves car free travel). Often they’ll be going easily 25-30mph. I follow several groups on our trails here in Ohio and if its not road bikes, it’s e-bikes, or it’s dogs off leash, or dogs on too long a leash, or kids that run rampant, or people on their phones, or with headphones. It's really that the trail is trying to be everything to everyone, but it’s just a path really, and whatever you make of it. An interesting microcosm of society's expectations overlapping. Happy New Year, Steve, and if Ohio is in your plans, let me know!
Hi April and thanks for your comment. I agree that rail trails can be a challenge. It is just a "path" for all to enjoy. I must admit that I've had more close dangerous encounters on rail trails than road riding. But they are for all to enjoy in their own way. I would love to ride the Ohio trails some day and will let you know. Thanks again and have a wonderful day Steve
You, my friend, are a BEAST!! I love how you said after passing the couple walking, that they were hearty souls out for a walk. UM, you are riding a bicycle with a freezing cold wind blowing in your face and THEY are the hearty souls??? NO NO, sir, YOU are the hearty soul!!! I rode the other day in 40 degree weather and, well, I don't quite know how to say this without sounding gross, but my nose ran like a sieve! I had to stop every couple minutes to blow my nose!! Anyway, a note on the Ebike issue - I think a lot of people believe that an Ebike is cheating and that is just not always true. It can make the difference between someone not being able to ride at all or getting out and enjoying life. I will be waiting unpatiently for your next video, hope you Mrs. is doing well, and I guess I have to add yet another trail to my "must ride" list!! Pedal on, my friend...
I think it depends on the e-bike. I ride a legal e-bike that has no throttle and that only assists me up to 25km per hour. Some people ride bikes that have been illegally modified. Apart from being a danger to themselves and everyone else, these people are indeed cheating.
Hey Amy, I hope you're having a good weekend! Well, I figured that anyone out on that cold, cloudy and windy day was a hearty soul. By the way, I hope your nose finally stopped running. I'm with you about Ebikes. Plenty of exercise and they get people out of the house. I will be reviewing a folding Ebike soon. That trail in Millerton is one of the best, although its a long way from Groton. Alway great to hear from you Amy! Take care, Steve
E-bikes are great equalizers. People who would not be able to travel far on a regular bike are able to explore rail trails on an e-bike. When I ride on rail trails I may travel 30 miles. My wife would not be able to cover that distance. With an e-bike she can accompany me and at times give me a quite a work out. She has a class 1 e-bike (Does not have a throttle, only moves when pedaled, and pedal assistance provided only up to 20 mph) which is permitted on the trails we travel.
Hi Alan and thank you for taking the time to comment. E-bikes are a wonderful invention. Great that your wife can now come along with you on many rides. Gives you the added exercise keeping up with her! A great way to get out and ride. Thanks again and all the best to you and your family. Steve
I have a bafang 750 watt convention motor on my mtn bike. It is tuned down to 75% power , I like to cruise at 10 to 12 mph . 70 1/2 years old right knee replacement , 260 lbs . I get the exercise for my body and motor help for my knee.
Your making me miss new England Steve! I grew up their and as a kid and teenager rode a bike everywhere except for snow mom and dad drew the limit lol! Now I live and bike in sunny Tucson AZ. Truly enjoy your rode trip videos!
I ride in the woods when it gets below 30. Had a great ride @ 22 Degrees last week🤗 The cold is wonderful and doesn't bother me at all. Good kit is crucial! Thanks for sharing your ride!
Same here... ride in the cold every day i can. Its tougher for sure, but if i dont ride i find myself missing it. I cant believe when i lived up north (CT) i missed out on that trail. i never heard of that. very glad i found your channel
I have been riding this year in colder than 50" and wearing my 3M N95 mask with two y cuts about where my mustache would end it keeps the air I breath 15" warmer than the outside temps. It also stays away from my mouth and nose avoiding the wet rag feel that a scarf when its agents the skin. My DR told me keep riding also I'm 67.
Love your videos. Here in Western Australia, we enjoy great cycling weather for most of the year. We only get rain for about four months during the winter and it doesn't get very cold. Summers are quite hot over here. That means that on hot days, I need to get up at 5 am to take advantage of the cooler temperatures at that time. I'm 75 and ride 45km a day on a Gazelle e-bike about five days a week on average. It's quite hilly and windy where we live so the assistance of the electric motor is very much appreciated on the climbs and against the strong winds. My bike has clocked up 56,000km. My goal is 100,000km which I hope to reach by the time I'm 80 or 81 at the latest. I had a massive heart attack at the age of 62 and received 3 stents.
Thanks for taking us along you’ve inspired me to maybe get my bike out tomorrow, since we don’t have any snow here in South Dakota I might might as well get out there before it’s too late. Love your channel.
Hi Gary and thanks for your comment! Good to hear from you and I hope all is well. It's one of my favorite trails. Thanks again and have a good weekend, Steve
Good man Steve, you brighten my day with your optimism and good nature. You are right about getting checked regularly, so important as I just lost a loved one way too early. Merry Christmas and keep up the great work
Hi John and thanks for your comment! Good to hear from you. I appreciate it. More of us should get checked out by our doctors regularly. Take care and have a nice weekend, Steve
So about e-bikes on trails - just yesterday I was riding on a local paved trail and was started by a guy on a road bike who blasted by me without saying a word. He was riding way too fast for the trail, and this happens frequently. People on regular bikes can ride the trails way too fast too. Sometimes it’s not the bike, it’s the person riding it. I understand that a heavy ebike can cause more harm in a crash than a lighter weight bike, but there are a ton a responsible riding e-bikers, and it’s not fair that they are banned from enjoying the trails, too.
Hi Elizabeth and thanks for your comment! You are so correct. Many road bike riders go way to fast on trails. I totally agree, it's not the bike, its the rider. Thanks for the observation. Have a great weekend, Steve
I wear a neck gaiter stretched over my ears, which allows my helmet to fit. But my hands suffer from the cold when it's below 40 F. I can't shift gears when I wear ski gloves, so I'm experimenting with BikeIowa pogie lites and two layers of bicycle gloves. I might have to try bar mitts.
Hi there and thanks for you nice comment! If I wear a thin buff as I did in this ride, my glasses don't fog. When its much colder I wear a neoprene ski face mask that's designed to funnel your breath downward. This keeps the glasses from fogging up. Thanks again, Steve
Hi Steve, love your videos. Just started vlogging my rides, so much fun. What kind of camera are using and how do you edit your videos. Keep up the great work 👍
Hi Izzy and thanks for your comment! Good luck on your channel. I use different cameras depending on the situation. Presently I mostly use a DJI osmo 4 action camera. However, Insta360 sent me a their Ace Pro to review. I will be reviewing it in a video within the next 4-6 weeks. Could be a game changer for a vlogging cyclist. Wait and see. I started editing with Movavi. Great program to start with. I recently graduated to Premier Pro which is more advanced. Movavi was great to learn the basics. This is all new to me in the last three years, however I've learned a lot about filming/editing watching people like Casey Neistat, Dan Mace and Dustin Klein. It's a work in process. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
Hi Joe and thanks for your comment! Cheating cheaters will always cheat. We can see through the "local legends". Maybe Strava will figure it out. Thanks again and have a good day, Steve
You can also buy that mirror or any other at your local bike shop. I totally agree that ebikes don't belong on bike paths, and as you mentioned " too many going too fast and most have no experience riding, let alone on bikes that are faster."
Hi Steve and thanks for your comment. They take out the port-o john's late fall. Have to be creative. Very quiet trail. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
I don't like an E bike for you ..its less safe.heavy if it ever didn't Electrify. Pain to handle once folded.... Getting out in the cold riding for fitness beats going to a sweaty JYM 😅 👍😎
Hi there and thanks for your comment! I guess I will find out first hand how much of a pain a folding ebike is to handle. A company is sending me one to test. I will have a video on it shortly after it arrives. I agree with you about getting out in the cold for fitness. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
Have you ever considered that 'exercise' is not good for your heart at all and in fact its bad for it? Try to think of any actual health benefits of exercise, I bet you cant think of any or even find any online that are real health benefits (meaning you will live longer). The people who live the longest are sedentary women who dont eat much. Women even outlive men and this is because they do less physical activity. Men are more suited to physical activity than women and they still die sooner because of it. Marathon runners have a very high rate of heartattack and often die in their 50s. The human body has a finite ability to copy cells and keep you alive, the more you do, the sooner you die. Its very simple and should be common sense really but there is a lot of brainwashing and misguiding information confusing everyone. The body's goal is to keep you alive, the body therefore makes you hungry when it wants fuel, tired when it wants sleep but never does it make you want to exercise. Why do you think that is? Because exercise is unhealthy, we are not designed to run or cycle unless in a life or death situation. Our ancestors threw spears, they did not chase animals they would never be able to catch its pointless. We have only two legs. meaning running wasnt the goal of our evolution it was to throw. No animal exercises and no natural human would ever exercise. The more you do, the more you need to eat and repair and the faster you age. People don't die of 'old age', they die because one of their organs has given up before the rest, often the heart and this is because its overworked. Just something you should consider if your goal is to live as long as possible.
@@Mikuzan Your comment is interesting, although I can’t comment without doing my own research regarding the points you make. I do know that since I started a program of vigorous exercise 15 years ago, I lost 60 lbs, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels returned to normal. My resting heart rate came down substantially and I feel much better. That, coupled with a 90% plant based diet has made a huge difference in my overall health. Will that add years to my life? Only time will tell. The way I’m living my life works for me.
@@steveretiredandcycling You believe in a lot of lies unfortunatley like most do. Cholesterol is good for you, look into it. Its all lies based on false information from a long time ago and won't be corrected because they make too much money selling people statins. Plant based is wrong. Humans are carnovores and I could give you very much evidence to support that. One being plants lack 15 different nutrients essential for human life. Another being no child instinctively wants to eat vegetables, if it was was good for you why would a natural child find them disgusting? Because they arent good for you. I know this may be hard for you to believe, but its the truth and I'm only bothering to type this to help you out. It sounds like you knowledge about health comes right from a doctor's mouth, which in theory sounds like a good idea but what you have to remember is that its all a business, doctors, pharma etc and its not a good business strategy for them to cure you, they only want to 'treat' you so you keep coming back for more pills. Your body makes cholesterol and all of your cells are made from it. The brain needs animal fat, becuase its made of animal fat and cholesterol. Thats all i'll say but try to think for yourself and really take in what i've said becuase these points im making are inarguable common sense.

Thanks Fred. Tucson is a beautiful place to live. Thanks again and all the best. Steve
I ride in the woods when it gets below 30. Had a great ride @ 22 Degrees last week🤗 The cold is wonderful and doesn't bother me at all. Good kit is crucial! Thanks for sharing your ride!
Hi there and thanks for your comment. Cold is fine. And yes, the kit is important! Thanks again, Steve
Glad to see you out riding.
Same here... ride in the cold every day i can. Its tougher for sure, but if i dont ride i find myself missing it. I cant believe when i lived up north (CT) i missed out on that trail. i never heard of that. very glad i found your channel
Thanks and all the best! Steve
My Saturday morning dilemma this time of year. Be out there tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration Steve.
Have fun and thanks for your comment Andrew! Take care, Steve
' e-yup !'
Great trail to ride every season! One of my favorites. You Go Steve!!! Thanks for all your videos, keeps me motivated to keep moving!!!!
Hi Jason there and thanks for your comment! One of my favorite trails also. Have a great weekend and all the best, Steve
Hi Terence and thanks for sharing! Sounds good, Thanks again, Steve
Hi Kevin and thanks for your comment. I appreciate it. Yes, the snow is coming! I hope to get out tomorrow. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
looks like a very scenic ride with the leaves down, nice ride Steve.
Hi Gary and thanks for your comment! Good to hear from you and I hope all is well. It's one of my favorite trails. Thanks again and have a good weekend, Steve
❤
Good man Steve, you brighten my day with your optimism and good nature. You are right about getting checked regularly, so important as I just lost a loved one way too early. Merry Christmas and keep up the great work
Hi John and thanks for your comment! Good to hear from you. I appreciate it. More of us should get checked out by our doctors regularly. Take care and have a nice weekend, Steve
the only problem i have with winter riding are cold feet/toes, going to try those hand warmers under my shoe cover
Sounds like a good idea. Thanks, Steve
Keep going Steve, a little cold weather is good for the spirit!.
You got that right!
Let me know if you find a good solution. Thanks, Steve
Hi Steve! Another great inspirational video! When you wear a face mask, what do you do to keep your glasses from fogging up?
@@steveretiredandcycling Hey Steve thanks for the response and info. Subscribed, good content 👍
@@Truthmatters4u Thanks Izzy!
Have you found the e-bikes tires last longer than regular bike tires?
Hi again Christine. I haven't put enough miles on an e-bike to make a comparison.
Good job.... the only thing I don't like about E- bikes is that they steal KOMs on Strava.
Hi Joe and thanks for your comment! Cheating cheaters will always cheat. We can see through the "local legends". Maybe Strava will figure it out. Thanks again and have a good day, Steve
I almost feel guilty Steve. My morning ride had temps of 55°
I'll pay for the mildness this summer though.😅
Great route you rode. See ya.
Thanks Tony! It was a bit cold. Take care, Steve
I am only 70, so do not need an ebike yet, maybe when I get old.
You can also buy that mirror or any other at your local bike shop. I totally agree that ebikes don't belong on bike paths, and as you mentioned " too many going too fast and most have no experience riding, let alone on bikes that are faster."
Hi Jackie and thanks for your comment! Totally agree. Have a great day and all the best, Steve
Looks like no 'official' place to pee. Good thing those cops never show up.
@@steveretiredandcycling yes be careful. I folding mine dumb and it slipped and the pedal hit my shin..guess I'm just mad at it 😆
You need to wear your helmet correctly. Down on your forehead. If you go over your handlebars it won't protect you. Ask me how I know.
Agreed, should have taken my slightly larger helmet. Thanks, Steve
Thank you for sharing. Many opinions make life interesting. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
@@steveretiredandcycling What do you think about what ive said though?
I've lost trust in doctors since the covid vaccines and poor the protocols used by hospitals to treatment patients with covid.
Hi there and thanks for your comment! Hard to find an old school doctor with integrity. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
