Hi! I'm Steve. I'm retired. I'm 70 and I bike with my wife! We thoroughly enjoy your videos. You doing a great job with your bicycle reviews. Keep logging those miles!
Hi Steve, thanks for sharing your trip! We also cycled the trail at the end of June 2023, just after the Ironman was canceled due to smoke from the wildfires! Montreal had the worlds worst air quality the day we stayed at the Comfort Inn in St Jerome! Fortunately not bad once we started. Had some showers but no bugs. The one time we had steady rain was when we rode the 11 mile detour on the highway! Wide shoulder and respectful drivers. Cecile and her husband at Auberge Chez Ignace in Nominique were wonderful hosts and the food outstanding! Fun to meet fellow travelers! A great trip! Have you done the Veloroute Bleuets in the Saguenay area? It’s a loop trail around Lac Saint Jean. We’re planning on going this year.
Hi Linda and thanks for sharing your experience! I love the trail and didn't have to do any road riding during our trip. I will check out the Veloroute Bleuets in the Saguenay area. We are always looking for good cycling. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
Hello Steve again I wanted to say what a wonderful video and you have shown the purpose in life to enjoy at the age of 70 the golden years with your wife that's the way to enjoy it. Thanks again
We were also there June 2023. We stayed at the campground in Conception and did day trips to ride the trail. In September 2022 we rode the entire trail up and back in 5 days, 3 days up from St Jerome to Mt Laurier then two long days back to St Jerome. We are also senior riders and travel from Prince Edward Island to ride our favorite trail, Petit Train du Nord!
Hi Brenda and thanks for your comment! It is one of the best trails ever. Jan and I hope to get to Prince Edward Island to ride sometime soon. Thanks again and take care, Steve
Steve, I wanted to try and do the P'tit Train du Nord this year and we just got back. Had a great time and the weather was almost perfect. Met many nice people and picked up a few French saying's along the way. Great recommendation and I think we will try and do it again next year but in the Fall to try and catch the leaves. - Tom
Hello! I'm planning a trip on le petit train du nord as well, I just loved watching you guys! I hope i'll be able to do the half of what you guys do by your age!! Keep going!
I am from Montreal and have ridden this route several times, but only the Tremblant St Jerome section. They are paving the gravel sections to reduce erosion and make it easier to ride with an ordinary bike. It is a great route with places to stop for food and drink and washrooms right on the trail (old train stations). There is a modest slope of about 2% going in the south-north direction. On a hot day trees provide a canopy of shade in amny sections. A great place to stop for repairs or a cofee is Espresso Sports in Mont Rolland (16:27). Everyone in these businesses speaks English even though French is the main language. You can actually ride all the way back to Montreal from st Jérôme (65 km) or take a commuter train (55 mins).
I really enjoyed your video series about the Empire State Trail, I did the northern half last year and 'm planning on riding down from Montreal to NYC sometime this year! The p'tit train du nord is a real gem, we're incredibly lucky to have it, it looks like you had a wonderful time :)
Hi Adam and thank you for your comment! The Empire State trail was a great ride once you get past the first 135 miles south of Plattsburg. Not a problem for an experienced rider though. Can you recommend any other multi day rides in Quebec that are similar to the Petit Train du Nord? Jan is not comfortable riding on busy roads. Have a great weekend, Steve
@@steveretiredandcycling I recommend the ride between montreal and granby (or further north-east to drummondville), it's almost all exclusively on trails similar to the p'tit train du nord! I also recommend checking out the Route Verte (our provincial cycling network) map online, it tells you what kind of trail (paved, unpaved, on-road, etc.) you're going to be riding on and has notes, cyclist-friendly lodging options, and detours. If you're ever in Montreal and are looking for a place to stay, give me a shout :)
@@adamwertheimerHi Adam and thank you for the suggestions and information. This helps a lot. Thank you for the offer of a place to stay too. I will keep in touch. Have a great day, Steve
Ohhhh Steve wonderful wonderful trip, a great trail in four days, I can see that despite the rain these days you have enjoyed your beautiful bicycle trip; In addition, you have stayed in very beautiful places, the landscapes are stunnig there in Canada. have a great weekend you and Jan, greetings from Argentina
Hi John and thank you for your comment. I hope that with time you will be back cycling again. Thanks again and all the best for a speedy recovery! Steve
What a nice trip. Those trails look so good. Thanks for the video. Plattsburg is a old Air Force town. The Butcher Block is a nice restaurant if your ever in the area again. Take care, Al
Hi Al. I hope all is well with you. It was a nice trip. Back when I was working, I spent a lot of time in Plattsburg. I've been to the Butcher Block many times. Great place. Take care, Steve
Great video. I cycled the trail last summer as well, as part of a longer trip (then again, I'm only 64). I didn't have a nice buss around the detour - not only was there highway riding, there were some pretty stubborn hills.
Wow, so much fun! This reminds me of the bike train at the Lehigh Gorge in Jim Thorp, PA on the weekends in the summer/fall. I love watching your videos.
Love your videos, and so look forward to them. My son, daughter in-law and her dad and I are riding the GAP trail from Pittsburgh to Cumberland in July. Have you ever ridden that trail?
Hi John and thanks for your comment! I will also be riding the GAP / C&O in May. It will be my first time and I plan on camping except for a hotel day in Cumberland. Should be a nice ride. Have a great weekend and all the best, Steve
great video Thanks for all the good information . Can you tell me can you rent an electric bike and do this trip My wife might not be able to do 30 miles a day?
Steve, we live about two hours south of St. Jerome in NY. Thanks for posting the video and I think we check out this trail sometime here in 2024. You mentioned bugs on your ride - what month did you ride the trail?
Hi Tom and thanks for the question. We cycled the trail the week of June15th. The bugs weren't unbearable however insect repellent make the ride more enjoyable. It was a great experience. Take care, Steve
Can you put contacts for the places you stayed at? I want to do this ride on an ebike this sumner. What month did you do thisbtour? Great video, enjoed the scenery.
Hi there and thanks for your question and comment! Watch the video again and look for the website of the tour management company. They last all the contacts and information regarding the places we stayed. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
Hi there and thanks for asking. I was riding my Priority 600X with 12 speed Pinion gearbox and Gates carbon belt drive instead of a chain. Love the bike. Thanks again, Steve
Hi Steve! It's good to see that your rain gear kept you and Jan warm and dry. I was wondering how it would perform. I've used those cheap pocket rain ponchos before which weren't much better than riding without. I've been caught out in the rain before, while on bike ride on trails, and I've ended up soaked to the gills. I'll have to give the type that you used in the video a try. Take care, David.
Hi David, I hope all is well with you! I looked at many rain jackets and found that most (even the expensive ones) don't do a very good job of keeping you dry on the inside. I bought mine from REI (the store brand). It was under $100 and has vents that unzip under the armpits. This helps a lot. Thanks again and have a nice weekend, Steve

Thanks Steve! Yes there are e-bikes for rent. Check out the trail websites.
Wonderful trip with Jan, I was wondering how many miles per day you did?? What a lovely trip.
